Subject: The neglected American prog bands poll

So many polls for British, and European bands. Now it's the American's turn. These are albums I own and are from the last twenty years. Feel free to chose up to three and leave comments.

Terraformer by TYA, over a narrow margin with the Psychedelic Ensemble and Spock's Beard.
Good poll, but a very difficult choice!

Is it something about your posts that compels me not to read them properly?
Yeah, I'll vote for the others I said before.

Hmm...Echolyn, Izz, Thank You Scientist, Spock's Beard, Phideaux, Frogg Cafe, and Discipline are all contenders. A number more that I need to check out before a proper vote.

Agree. And the music Ohm plays (jazz fusion) is far from his stint in Megadeth.

Spocks Beard are one of those bands I've never been able to connect with at all. Not that I would want them to be neglected and they have a much bigger audience than a lot (nearly all) the bands I mainly listen to. I saw them at ROSfest the one year I went, they were one of the better bands there and seemed to go down extremely well with the audience.

You're probably going to regret asking, but first of all, I didn't know Spock's Beard were American, and secondly, I saw them recently in one of the Prog Rock Dock concert series, but they didn't excite me at all. To be honest, I'd rather watch Marillion in concert.

Ok, maybe neglected was the wrong word. You are a tough crowd. I don't hear much discussion about any bands in this poll as much as the European bands.

Well sometimes it may seem like we only discuss Henry Cow here.
I wouldn't say the forum is a Eurocentric generally as it is Anglocentric specifically, and even then it's more classic era and a short list of bands.

Spock's Beard and Dream Theater. Subsequently, I did find some Spock's Beard that I could appreciate. I'm not generally into the so called melodic rock/ melodic metal kids of music, or that which is on the AOR or arena rock side. SB can remind of certain kinds of evangelical Christian rock that I really dislike They seem to represent a branch of Americana that completely alienates me.
I don't like the vocals, attitude, style... It's just not my cup of Budweiser (and I dislike Budweiser beer). I also mostly don't like the Mars Volta or what I heard of Coheed and Cambria. Generally I am not into hard rock or metal as well, nor am I big on the symphonic prog category (I'm more of a chamber prog kind of guy).
EDIT: I should have said though that I have not heard that specific DT album and there is music off the particular SB album that I do like. When I first read this somehow I missed that there were albums to go with the act names.
Bateless Edge and Vehicle are my favourite albums that are listed.

Disregard those and go back to the beginning, with A Blueprint of the World. Its sound is "Kansas meets Rush meets ...Three-era Genesis."
Assuming you like it, proceed to Time Lost. If those two don't cinch it, Enchant is not for you.

I think I have time lost on cd somewhere. I like it. I also had blueprint at one point and plan on getting it again(assuming it's not oop by now). I'll possibly get the live album too but other than those and what I have I just don't feel the need to explore much further. I don't think the later stuff is awful I just have to be in the mood for it. They certainly had their moments later on and juggling 9 dropping 10 is actually quite good but it was maybe the start of them being more song oriented or something. Not sure. Break and wounded I haven't heard.

Maybe as a Prog band, I don't know, but not as an Alternative Rock band based on my experience. The people I have known who were into the band were more into various alt. rock than Prog per se. That said, that's a very limited sample size and I shouldn't draw much in the way of generalisations from my limited experience. I don't often hear Proggers talking about C&C, let alone how highly they regard it. The ratings at the PA page are generally good, but not stellar. The Color Before the Sun has the lowest rating. The music I heard of C&C I really disliked no matter how one labels it.

They are certainly well appreciated within the world of alternative rock, but I personally think that prog fans very much underrate their music. The album In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3, "The Willing Well" suite from Good Apollo Vol. 1, and both of The Afterman albums are all masterpieces of prog rock IMO. I will certainly concede that it can be a bit of an acquired taste, especially with Claudio Sanchez's vocal style; however, I personally feel that regardless of personal taste, it is some very excellent music, and I think it deserves higher ratings on the site. Not The Color Before the Sun though—that album f**king sucks.

Thanks. I haven't heard much C&C and not for many years, and never a full album. What I did hear was too emo for me, but that would have been from the band's early years. The Mars Volta has rather reminded me of them, which is another band I couldn't really get into. I never listened to enough to really acquire the taste, but I have found that those bands/albums which take some time to get used to or really deeply appreciate can have the longest lasting impact on me. I found that with a lot of Van der Graaf Generator for instance. I've acquired the taste for a much greater diversity of music since I last tried C&C, so I will probably give it a go again.

Here's another great Bay Area prog band, Maximum Indifference, that also ceased activity after two albums. I saw them live in 2001. They cooked with fire!
