TOP 20 RUSH Songs - #1

This is the new, long distance project ON A MISSION - to determine consensus 20 Best Rush Songs Cool
As determined in http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=124241" rel="nofollow - this preliminary thread, we are using a method already tested in a similar http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=124211" rel="nofollow - Genesis Project .

Every participant names three songs in order of preference:
First song = 4.5 points
Second song = 3 points
Third song = 2 points
After a couple of days I add up your "points" and announce the winning song for a current spot.
Then we move on and vote for the next spot. All points are reset.
Our goal is to come up with 20 songs and hopefully get it done before Christmas Clown

Voting is closed.
No. 1 song is Xanadu

1. Xanadu. 38.0 pts
2. La Villa Strangiato. 32.5 pts
3. 2112. 13.5 pts
4. The Camera Eye. 12.5 pts

My vote.
The Camera Eye - 4.5 points
Xanadu - 3.0 points
Natural Science - 2.0 points

I'll just paste what I said recently about The Camera Eye: I really think they hit the sweet spot between "tight, impressive prog outfit" and "devilishly satisfying" there. Heard that huge riff coming a zillion times, but I'm always astonished once it comes... and it never keeps the guard down. Delicious 9 minutes or so.

Xanadu also flows very well and I pretty much enjoy every second of it. The buildup reaches YES heights. Guitar tone is close to perfect. Definitely a huge leap forward between 2112 songwriting and this, Rush entered their peak in 1977 imho. Could be my no. 1 pick tomorrow.

Natural Science is pretty much tied with Cygnus when it comes to "satisfaction". But the sequence starting at 5:30, that illuminating riff, followed by guitar solo, and then the pure ecstasy of 7:20, tight drumming, magnificent outro with waves out there - it's just too much to handle! All packed under 10 minutes. Terrific song that probably won't get many votes - yet Big smile

1. Cygnus X-1 Book II Hemispheres. Can I vote for an epic? Great music, good story, profound lyrics.
2. Red Barchetta. Relatively concise and packs a big punch. Repeatedly.
3. The Spirit of Radio. Oddly radio friendly for a song that criticizes commercialism. Great guitar work by Alex.

1. Tom Sawyer
2. Xanadu
3. La Villa Strangiato

I've still not heard anything by anybody that is remotely like Tom Sawyer . Peart's drumming is so perfect although everything is nailed down so tight. Young lad at work is also a fan so it still resonates across the generations which is heartening.

1. 2112 - First Rush song heard when I was 15 at my next door neighbors house. Blew me away, and still does.

2. Freewill - Very catchy tune with great lyrics.

3. Between the Wheels - I don't know why, but this song clicks for me.

Yes, you can. I'm actually surprised to see "Book II" with one vote so far! It's still early tho Wink
Oh, and Red Barchetta is very deserving of no. 2, great picks

Tom Sawyer has that sense of imminent danger, "anything can happen" within that song. It's not happy, nor sad; no anger or triumph; little emotion but full of Badass

La Villa Strangiato has a great start Cool

I'll lend my support to one of the main competitors and give nods to a couple of personal favorites.

1) Xanadu
2) The Anarchist
3) Emotion Detector

I love the atmosphere in that one, and it has a great guitar solo (as do most of the tunes on Moving Pictures).

I like the "Yes heights" description.  Xanadu's high points are really good.

There's definitely good stuff to click with in that song--great choruses and an awesome solo.

Rush was great at creating a sense of danger when they wanted to, and different sorts of danger, from The Necromancer to Distant Early Warning to The Anarchist.

I remember a bunch of Rush lists featured elsewhere on the internet (usually "rock", not "prog" oriented sites), and 2112 usually takes the top spot. Perhaps proggers look deeper in their catalogue? On the other hand, some Rush dedicated forum had a thread going about Xanadu being overrated - and they definitely have a great knowledge of Rush discography. So it might be a matter of taste, we love those buildups, synthesizers and quirks, but people in general prefer blazing rockers perhaps Question

If you could please disclose at least 10 songs out of 10.000, preferably 1977-81 period, I'll pay!

I know that forum, I've been on it for years! lol That Xanadu thread wasn't so much people agreeing it was overrated as it was one guy who doesn't think it's that great of a song trying to figure out why everyone else likes it.

Also I would pay for even 1 song from that period.

If I had one "brand new" album from 1979 or so, fusion of prog rock approach of Hemispheres and efficient songwriting with synthesizer touch (a la Permanent Waves and especially Moving Pictures), I would definitely move Rush up in my all time ranks! That might actually be another thread idea right there.

I'll be closing this thread today so it's your last chance to vote! Cool
