Relayer is, IMHO, Yes' masterpiece.
I've never (for the 70s), never (for the 80s), never (for the Naughties), never (for the Teens), never (for yesterday) been able to get into or enjoy Larks Tongues.

Both are in my top three or so and it's close(but not to the edge) but I have to go with relayer.

I haven't heard it in a long time but I remember thinking it's a very wacked album. I think that's part of it's charm though. It's so unhinged you have to respect it. Relayer is a bit wacked out too in parts but not quite like larks and not as consistently wacked.

Relayer's overrated. It's great, but nowhere near Yes' best.

LTIA easy.

LTIA, well aged and for me over any Yes album (except, maybe, TFTO).

Couldn't agree more!

Relayer is the slightly younger, though perhaps a little less fun (only mildly) cousin of Close To The Edge, and an all around masterpiece of an album. What can I say? The Gates of Delirium is a magnificent, epic piece that challenges the likes of TFTO's tracks and even Close To The Edge, with Soon, the beautiful and haunting conclusion; Sound Chaser is to Relayer as Siberian Khatru is to Close To The Edge, and an incredible enjoyable and technically impressive piece; and To Be Over is one of my all time favorite Yes songs, with its beautiful opening and signature Yes style, closing with as much beauty as it began.

LTIA is a good album but it's not even one of my favorite King Crimson albums. It's a little sub their greater works, and simply not on the level of the likes of any 70s Yes, let alone Relayer.

Now Red is a different story, but that's another matter entirely.

I think I did this one a few years ago. I'm going with Relayer, just because of Gates of Delirium, though Larks has a some great songs too, of course.

For me personally, I can't think of a KC album better than LTIA. Certainly not red which has a 12 minute improv piece that brings it down a bit or the debut which has more or less the same issue. The thing I like about both of these choices is they both represent each band at their most wild and carefree and as I said in an earlier post "wacked out." However, Islands is probably the weirdest KC album over all.

Personally I think the near perfection of the rest of Red gives the simple decency of Providence a pass, especially since it acts as a bit of a calm before the storm that is Starless.

But generally I agree that LTIA is almost surprisingly devoid of filler for a 70s KC album. Even ones where I can't pin down single fillers tracks like Lizard and Islands have their  less-than-stellar moments. Larks' Tongues is what it is 100% of the runtime.

That's my answer. LTIA is a masterpiece, only eclipsed by Red.

If this were between certain tracks, it'd be Relayer with Gates.

HOWEVER...

LTIA part 2 is a beast and people still don't see the connection to the metal bands that robbed that sound literally 30 years after the fact.

KC on this one. The influence to me is more undeniable, despite both records essentially being perfect.

Immagine something like Fracture instead of Providence on that album. Or perhaps, thinking of something that was not released on another album that could give us a better idea, like Dr Diamond (I rather like it on Collectable King Crimson vol 1), or even, if they wanted a live iprov from the tours, I think the more obvious choice would have been the Ausbury Park improv (from the USA album).

I mean if there's a ceiling for greatness, Red is already inches from the top. You may be right though.

I've not been able to get into Larks Tongues in Aspic, so Relayer is an easy choice.

"Relayer" is my favourite album by Yes, "Larks' Tongue in Aspic" only ranks 5th among the King Crimson albums for me (my favourite is "Lizard"), so "Relayer" gets my vote.

Interesting to see how people go back and forth on these! A few years back Relayer was "meh", and LITA was untouchable on these boards.
