Generaly that would be Meddle for "echoes" but as an album it is uneven  and except "one of these days" the rest is rather bland plus those football fans singing are just stupid. So as an album I would go for Piper - it's more grounbreaking (sometimes revolutionary) and there is not one weak track on it. Maybe there is nothing as fabulous as "echoes" on it, yet not football fans to spoil the album either.

Meddle has Echoes and One of These Days, both of which are brilliant.
Piper is just awful from start to finish.

I will swim against the stream and vote Piper.

Meddle is an album that I really want to like, but it doesn't really excite me. Sure, there are some great moments especially in "Echoes", but it somehow feels a bit unredeemed.

Piper, on the other hand, is this great psychedelic pearl with Syd's amazing songs that are equally childlike and mature, comic and serious, naive and deep. Great work.

I agree side one is a bit uneven. What ruins it for me are just two songs though and those would be "a pillow of winds" and "Seamus." "San Tropez" isn't much better. "One of these days" and "fearless" are both pretty good though. "Echoes" is one of the best things PF has ever done though and mostly because of that track I give the advantage to Meddle.

Piper.

Echoes is a masterpiece and One Of These Days is great, but the rest of Meddle is ok/meh to me. While the Piper is sheer brilliance from start to finish.

Meddle of course, as that's the album that got me into the Floyd.

Meddle for me, very easily. You could have included Piper on the other poll and I still wouldn't have voted for it.

Voted for Piper but I could easily have voted for meddle as well. Their two best albums up until their mature period of DSOTM and WYWH.

Meddle contains Echoes which is the PF track that I like the most, but the "songs" side is not that good.
My vote goes to Syd.

I stand with Roger Waters, I stand with Joan Baez, I stand with Victor Jara, I stand with Woody Guthrie. Music is revolution

I've often thought that if they'd held over 'Biding My Time' instead of releasing it on Relics earlier in the year, and discarded 'San Tropez' and 'Seamus' then it might have improved the first side, plus it kind of fits in with the overall romantic feel of the album.

Meddle. Love PatGoD, but Meddle. Fearless, Pillow of Winds, One of these Days, Echoes. Can't beat it.

We're comparing Apples and Oranges, which reminds me of Syd, which makes me want to vote for Piper at the Gates of Dawn.

Heaven forbid we should be asked to choose between 'Piper' and 'The Wall'!

Very very tough. I actually think that both of these have top masterpieces besides quite a bit of stuff that I rarely feel like visiting. I go for both equally for once.

Both equally.  The band had evolved so rapidly from the first album to 'Meddle' so that a comparison is meaningless.  I know many will go for the mighty 'Echoes' when making their choice but it's like comparing the first Yes album to 'Close to the Edge' etc.

Or comparing 'From Genesis to Revelation' with 'Selling England by the Pound'.

Piper is often considered to be one of the best of the pre dark side albums and so is Meddle. That's why they were both singled out for this particular poll. It really has nothing to do with their similarities or differences. I've seen a lot of polls on here where the albums or artists aren't similar. Two or more items being similar is not a prerequisite for a poll.

It would be more like comparing the first Yes album with Fragile (CttE would be equivalent to Dark Side I guess... or even WywH). And Comparing Piper with the Genesis debut wouldn't seem apropriate either, because Piper was actually a notorious album at the time, as I understand it, unlike the Genesis one (or the Yes one either, for that matter).

I've always despised Jonathan King, but he did give Genesis and 10cc the kick started they needed to get their careers going.
