So which band do you prefer over all? Genesis or Rush? If you are only a fan of the PG/SH era I will ask that you either don't vote or vote for number 4* and the same thing with Rush( but with post MP). This is about the entire careers of both bands. Thank you.
* Preferring the SH/PG era is not the same as hating or disliking all of the other eras of the band. So if you are at least ok with the post SH era and don't hate it then you can vote for 2 otherwise I ask that you please don't for the sake of keeping this poll as fair as possible. The same thing goes for Rush and their post Moving Pictures era.

Rush, easily. I dig Genesis (especially the albums immediately following Peter's departure), but Rush is the more consistent band. Yes, Rush streamlined their sound in the '80s, as most '70s bands did, but they didn't succumb to the whims of the pop sirens. They just kept evolving, they kept making good music.

Well, sue me but I don't like it when someone says "I only like the PG era" or whatever. Because then I would have to have it listed as PG era Genesis. When I say Genesis I mean the whole band not just one era of the band.

Because the premises that have been set on the poll. I like the early Genesis, not after Hackett left, so it limits my choices. I vote neither for that reason only. I like both bands a lot, but from the albums I like, both from rush and Genesis, I cannot really pick and choose between them, so I also voted neither, meaning I don’t prefer one over the other.

You have tons of albums before the trio era though, it's not like somebody is saying they only like the Anthony Philips era, or the Syd Barret era in Pink Floyd, etc. I mean, you can find tons of Rolling Stones fan who don't care for post Exile on Main Street era, or Jethro fans who don't care post-Stormwatch, Kinks, R.E.M, etc.
I like the Collins era but I don't like they Ray Wilson era, I still consider myself a fan.

I probably prefer Rush a little bit over Genesis but I might vote for Genesis anyway(or at least both equally). I know Rush fans like to think that Rush never sold out but ultimately it's about the quality of the music. Plus was the PC era of Genesis really that bad?

I absolutely agree with this. And I would add 'Selling England...' and 'Foxtrot'.
To me,Rush is a hard rock band that knew how to prog but did not necessarily do it throughout the entirety of their career.
While Genesis are in the prog gods, period.

I struggled with this a lot more than I thought I would (even though I started the poll). Traditionally Rush has been my number 2 band (right behind Yes). I've seen Rush four times in concert and Genesis so far only once (that will change in December). So despite that I still felt like I should be voting for Genesis for some reason or at least both equally. Yes and Genesis were the two bands I felt really strongly about and at one point it seemed like I could have called them Geneyes. However, over the years Peart's lyrics resonated with me more and they seemed to be more cerebral than most Genesis after 1980 or so. While I don't mind the pop Genesis and probably like it more than most on here I still probably would go for the 80's Rush over eighties Genesis. Anyway, because Rush were down so much on here I decided to pull the trigger and vote for them which I might have done anyway even though it was very tempting to vote for both equally.

Rush are great, but I think only Moving Pictures I could compare with the peak of Genesis such as Selling England, Foxtrot or Nursery Cryme. And I'd still take SEBTP over it. I'd also say Genesis are more consistent, I'd take their weak era over Rush's, although both were pretty decent at their worst.

When it comes to Genesis, I love everything from Trespass up to (and including) Abacab. Rush, on the other hand...let's say I really like them from Fly by Night to Hemispheres. Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures are ok. Yes, the crappiest albums from Genesis are worse than the worst Rush records, but if I were to pick the best 10 albums between both bands, Genesis would get an eight out of ten.

Hold on, Rush cite genesis as a strong influence in their music, and you can clearly hear Genesis in rush's music. Is this a reasonable comparison?
Oh well, Genesis hands down for me.

I started off with Rush in the late 70's, but then got in Genesis in the mid 80's (strictly the 70's albums).
Genesis has stood the test of time better than Rush, for me. Even decades later, I still listen to classic Genesis, whereas I rarely ever listen to Rush.
I do have one fondness for Rush, as I got to play a lot of their songs in two bands I used to be in (which was a lot of fun). Used to have a Rickenbacker 4001 bass too. Have never played any Genesis with a band though, sadly.

They've cited an influence but I can't hear it strongly in their music, especially up to and including 2112. The first time I heard Watcher of the Skies, that rhythm did make me think of Lamneth, I guess.

Don't know about that.....usually when a band releases albums that do not sell well, the tours can lag. Both bands still toured big into the 90s, with Rush taking the touring trophy of the two. Rush tours became bigger and bigger each time. All those 90's albums are Gold status, heck even Rush Vapor Trails peaked at #6 on US Billboard 200.
Your talking about progressive rock albums from the 70s versus two prog rock acts into the 90's..Not much compares to CTTE and ItCOtKC.

As Rush are a second order group (i.e. they recorded after the start of the progressive movement) then they have no comparison to Genesis, who were innovators. Thus, Rush had reference points relating to extant bands and recordings (arguably Genesis did too, The Nice, Rare Bird etc. but prog was in its infancy). Rush chose to debut with a straight ahead rock album in 1974 and then matured into (mainly) sophisticated hard rock.
