^ On the subject of classical composers, Sergei Progkofiev (1891-1953) was quite proggy too, especially on Romeo and Juliet, which was later covered by Emerson, Lake & Palmer on their 1992 Black Moon album. Clap

I voted for Cristi's cat because it's a cat, but I probably should have gone for "kills time at work" or maybe "other" (Svetty's attempts to nominate every vaguely prog band on Bandcamp for inclusion in PA, his attempts to flood PA with YouTube pages and then his numerous alter-egos).

Assuming you’re not saying that sarcastically, I genuinely do love seeing younger people join and contribute to the forum - even if they say things that have been said here before. Everyone is excitable in that discovery phase, and I hate seeing some of the grumpy old codgers shoot them down. Sometimes this forum is not the most welcoming for new members.

Of course, your tongue is either clearly in your cheek or you are being wilfully obtuse to claim the show “ended over 40 years ago”. There is more prog than ever, and as vital and original as it ever was. There were some not so original, and not so great prog bands back in the day, and the same is true now. But anyone claiming prog ended 40 years ago either has a very narrow definition of prog, or has their ears full of potatoes. By all means state your preference for a certain era, but writing off all prog after a certain arbitrary date is as nonsensical as claiming an entire genre of music (the most common example on this forum being hip hop) is rubbish. There are ways of stating opinions without being unnecessarily negative about that which one doesn’t like.

The Stooges were effectively several different bands with more or less the same members, and the same name, but making quite different music. Their initial phase up to and including their first two albums (before their first of many breaks ups), I think you could fairly easily (if perhaps controversially) argue them to be a prog band.

Hardly surprising comments from someone who thinks the Stooges are a Prog bandConfused. I do celebrate the fact that we can all enjoy what was some truly fantastic music that like anything deserving of the term innovative, qualifies as such only in the context of its time. Progressive Rock you haven't heard before recorded in 1971 and what purports to be Progressive Rock you haven't heard before recorded in 2021 will both be new to you but not necessarily original or innovative in the context of the times of their respective inception. I don't think my idea of Prog narrow, just narrower than yours as I think that every notable musical development has a shelf life beyond which it starts to be just an influence on what follows. The idea that Prog Rock still exists as a 'vital and original' art-form in 2021 is probably worthy of consideration only by the dark satanic mill owners of Bandcamp/Spotify etc or the mental health profession. On an unrelated note why do your insults (re potatoe ears?) sound like 'Dad' insults but target someone old enough to be that yet from a source young enough to qualify as a sprog? Does this really boil down to Prog Rock v Sprog Rock?Wink

PS Prog represents about 25% of my listening activity and I have reviewed albums favorably on PA by the likes of Transatlantic, the Gourishankar, Porcupine Tree, Kettlespider, Barbaro, Bela Fleck, Areknames and Runaway Totem (not sure if these are sufficiently past an arbitrary date of your choosing to pass muster as modern?) The remaining 75% is filled with Jazz, Hip-Hop, Rap, Dub, Reggae, Classical, Pop, Rock'n'Roll, Blues, Country, Punk, Post Punk (the list goes on) but not alas, the Stooges whose sprawling and cerebral concept albums, 20 minute track lengths, sparkly capes and tights, labyrinthine metric and harmonic modulations are just way over my head and leave me completely unmoved (I know, it's my loss)

Oh, Mr Lemming, you do so like pulling things out of context. The claim that one could argue that The Stooges were prog was, as I’m sure you would be aware, if you’d read all the discussion, in relation to the idea of a US variant of prog that was progressing along very different lines to the European one. I would never claim that The Stooges were prog, as prog is commonly understood. But, by all means, continue to pull that wee gem out (this being the second time I have noticed it) in an attempt to poke fun at me.

My dad “insults” are probably because I’m a dad. Like my dad jokes. I wasn’t trying to insult you, by the way, hence why I have put insults in inverted commas. I wasn’t even directing any criticism at you, particularly - and went as far as to say I assumed that you were saying what you were saying with your tongue firmly in cheek. But there are some who do feel that prog had an arbitrary best before date.

I’m not sure why you mention “modern” as that was not a word I ever used. Not least, because it is somewhat meaningless. Recency is not the same as modernity, and there is a lot of prog that is being made at the moment that is merely a recycling of the past. I’m no great fan of this retro prog, though again I would never fail against it all, as there are some bands and artists who make this music that I do enjoy. I suspect a lot of people who claim prog has been and gone use these bands who seem somewhat stuck in the past as evidence for their argument. And there is certainly a massive audience for this type of music. But it’s not the be-all, and end-all. And there is still plenty out there that is original and innovative - or, at least, as original and innovative as anything can ever be. Influences can be as easily inferred now, as they could in past decades.

Here's a tip: If you want to listen to a YouTube video without intrusive ads, in the textbox used to create a post, embed a video using the "tube" tags, but instead of posting, simply preview the post so that you can listen to the video without actually creating a post on the forum. There may still be ads, but not the type that intrudes upon the music you're listening to.

Other really.

I'm here for the Polls. I have a feeling someone else said that, not sure of the context.

Anyway, the occasional insight is well, very occasional but the intransigence of many carries it's own level of amusement.

Some, even many reviews, when well considered (not just blatant emotion which ever way it swings) are well worth the read. Not professional propagandists paid by record companies to hype product as they used to be. Not here on PA but analogue life of old.

The definition of prog which while fulsome indeed just never carries the immediacy you get with classical, jazz, punk, metal, baroque, rap, disco etc. You always know where you are with these. Prog not so much. Some of the definitions go on for longer than certain bands catalogues.

I do like to know what some is not it's what something is that makes things real. Rush are prog and I so like the Pink Floyd polls. The level of objective consistency in people's views are so wayward as to afford a good deal of most necessary laughter.

It's the comedy quotient.

Thank you all so much.
