Hallo. I just looked inside of the booklet of the "Pawn Hearts" remastered cd and red about the band Lindisfarne, who were on tour together with Genesis and Van Der Graaf Generator back in 1971. Who knows them and what kind of prog (?) they did?

| They weren't really a prog band, but like most early 70s albums, there's elements of prog in their sound. Lindisfarne were far better known as a folk rock combo, (in)famous for the song 'Fog On The Tyne', an ode to the Tyne river in Newcastle. This knees up singalong is hardly representative of their music, which was a very interesting blend of folk, blues and country elements with terrific harmonies. 'Meet Me On The Corner' is a particularly nice song of the era. |

| Don't think they really sound like Tull- Jethro Tull are very intricate, whilst Lindisfarne have far more basic song structures. That's not to denigrate Lindisfarne though- the two bands had different strengths. |

Actually their early music was a bit of acid-folk genre and fairly interesting. As someone poiunted out Fog On The Tyne is their best but all three first albums are worth a listen> but lately they sound like a country rock band ------------- let's just stay above the moral melee prefer the sink to the gutter keep our sand-castle virtues content to be a doer as well as a thinker, prefer lifting our pen rather than un-sheath our sword |

Lady Eleanor would sit nicely on a prog folk compilation, but apart from that they're more a kind of straight ahead, good time folk rock band. I love this band's first two albums Nicely Out Of Tune and Fog On The Tyne ... excellent folk rock ... Alan Hull was an amazing songwriter ... with a real gift for tugging at your heartstrings ... Rod Clements wasn't that bad either As Syzygy said, they did run out of steam very quickly though ... halfway through the third album Dingly Dell, in fact ... which is a shame because it had some excellent political material like All Fall Down, Bring Down The Government and Poor Old Ireland They were never really that progressive ... but boy they had some good songs ... Meet Me On The Corner is a song I've sung to all three of my children when they were newborns ... so I've got a real sentimental attachment to this band ... My Top 10 Lindisfarne tunes ... there is actually a "best of" with all these tunes ... 1) Meet Me On The Corner ------------- "Death to Utopia! Death to faith! Death to love! Death to hope?" thunders the 20th century. "Surrender, you pathetic dreamer.” "No" replies the unhumbled optimist "You are only the present." |
