I've seen a handful, and most are very good. I just woke up from a nap, but once I get some caffeine, I'll look some of them up.

"Holy Hell" is the only one I can remember at the moment after a quick search.

This is a topic that I am very interested in, but am wary about discussing because of themes.

I've seen Holy Hell. My favourite I saw on Netflix was the series Wild Wild Country (six episodes I think).  I've seen that al the way through at least twice.  It's fascinating, and I think so well made.  I highly recommend it.

I have been wanting to watch the HBO Max Heavens Gate series  The Heaven's Gate podcast was very good, but even with nine episodes on it, I felt it did not go into enough depth (it missed details, this is one that I have heavily researched and watched lots of video footage from the group and read lots from survivors -- people who had left the cult before the exit).  Warnings come with it as it could trigger some.  I have subscribed to a few cult podcasts.  Lets Talk About Sects is one.

Saw several but do not remember the names of most of them.  Last one was the documentary on Scientology. Never thought Scientology as a cult until I saw that documentary.  If even half of what was portrayed is true, then yea, it’s a cult.

Oh yeah, I've seen a few on Scientology (another group I really delved into at one time). I love the soundtrack for Louis Theroux's My Scientology Movie.

I have also seen (and heard) ones about Jonestown, The Solar Temple, and David Koresh's Branch Davidians.

I find Jonestown particularly disturbing and the footage (wish I'd stayed away from that -- not good for my well-being -- found it very distressing). I was so invested in researching Heaven's Gate at one time that I almost felt like I was a member of the group. I felt a strong affinity, not with the leaders, not with Ti and Do (Do I feel I know more), but with the people who joined the cult and I feel great sadness for the families and their loss of "the away team".

I guess now I'm not so into such things because they affect me more strongly on an emotional level.

You would think that only half-wits would be suckered into it.  However, from what I is saw there are a lot of highly educated and intelligent folks that fall for it.

My favourite "cult". You can always do "your" own documentary concerning this, with a random crowd; possibly all over the world.

I've watched fascinating but disturbing documentaries on all of those cults you mentioned, but the only American cult that really appeals to me is the one below. Smile

I have seen pretty much all of the ones mentioned above.  I've always been fascinated with the way people are attracted to these things and pretty much consider all religions as being very much like cults.

There were two really great documentaries about the NXIVM cult:  "The Vow" and "Seduced".  This is one cult that is ongoing and it's quite shocking the more you discover about it all.  I would suggest watching "The Vow" first because it saves the biggest shockers for the last episode, but it also gives insight into how it is possible to get wrapped up into this disgusting cult.  "Seduced" on the other hand focuses on one person that had escaped the cult and it dives right in to the dirtiest secrets.  Honestly, "Seduced" almost acts as a sequel to "The Vow", but both are very well done.

The problem I have with occult documentaries is basically the mistrust I have in journalism. Newspapers are the main source for occult related crimes, ritualistic killings, yet much of the history is covered up and with several documented cases. Perhaps to protect the reputation of a town? ...or someone rich with power had a son or daughter that got mixed up with a cult and as it turns out...the only way to protect their family's reputation is to not reveal a certain theory and settling for an easier one which places the blame on the times we were living in. LSD, Rock Music, and Horror films lured our youth into the occult.

This is what I experienced in the early 70s: My friends and I went camping at Menantico , Crystal, and other wooded areas in Vineland NJ..or we just went there to party. To feel free. First we would hear chanting. Then we would hear drums..but they were actually oil barrels. We would hide and watch them. They wore robes and masks and were beyond creepy.

About a year later I read in the Vineland Times Journal that a young man asked his two closest friends to bound his hands and feet...walk him into "Clear Pond " at Menantico and die violently so that he could return as a captain to rule over 40 leagues of demons.

His two friends admitted right away to the killing. The defense went for "suicide with assistance " and the newspapers attributed it to the influence of LSD, Rock Music, and Horror films. Charles Pangburn, chief of police confiscated evidence that he refused to reveal at the inquest. The inquest into widespread cultic activity in the Vineland area.

Somewhere he had information or an idea that a large group of people witnessed the young man's sacrifice. He began interrogating a group of people who belonged to the Chestnut Assembly Of God church. There was "Duo Worship " tied into their beliefs. They worshipped God and Satan. He continued to hammer on them but he couldn't prove they were present during the ritual with physical evidence.

The newspapers continued to report that Charles Pangburn refused to divulge his evidence. He then interrogated people living in Vineland who had revolted against the Church Of Satan. Supposedly they were part of a group that Lilith Sinclair was forming..which in 1972 became the "Temple Of Set" on the East coast of the U.S.

One of the victim's friends when advised of his rights stated that the victim belonged to a Satan worshippers sect. It doesn't make sense. A sect is a small group. Charles Pangburn was after a large group...which makes more sense to me because I saw from a distance a large gathering wearing masks. In the summer of 1971 , shortly after the sacrifice at Menantico...an amount of 80 to 90 teenagers belonging to different Satan cults had been converted to Christianity and they gave their testimonies in Landis Park in Vineland. They denied knowing the victim from the Menantico cult and several of them belonged to other Satan cults. This is briefly covered in the N.Y. Times and is attributed to LSD

Many of the newspaper articles on this case are obsolete and only two newspaper articles are accessible on the internet. The ritual has been referred to in the past as the "One Hundred Year Ritual " and it had been stated by people I knew that the exact same ritual took place in the Cumberland County area in 1871. Although..I've never been able to confirm this.

Charles Pangburn was persistent in his belief that a wealthy organization was behind the young man's sacrifice at Menantico. A Christian community moved to Vineland and Christians followed us when we walked home from school. They were very clear and persistent in warning us. They would ask if anyone had tried to talk us into joining a cult. They asked us if we knew anyone in a cult. They kept warning us and insisting that we reveal it to them so they could report back to the police. Now why do you think they'd be so determined to know that? Everyday they approached us and questioned us. Why?

This is why I have a problem with the publications industry. Most of what I experienced has never been covered by a newspaper. It was only hinted. The day the newspapers hit the pavement..a few of my friends called me on the phone and said that a lot of it was being covered up. I tend to agree. This is why I can't possibly put faith in occult documentaries. They don't mean to hide the truth necessarily but they do perpetuate what certain characters are paid to say and that's quite imposing to me.

Cults prey on the vulnerable; people who are looking for a sense of belonging, people who are looking to something or  someone else for "answers", people who are prepared to follow rather than search through their own solitude.

The afraid, the gullible and the plain intellectually lazy.

Those willing to believe that faith is enough.

People generally doubt that someone can be born to a Satanic cult. Perhaps they find it farce because there's never been enough evidence to prove it. Regarding cults that follow apocalyptic Christian doctrine there is, but not too much physical evidence leading anyone in particular to believe that a Satanic cult of middle aged or elderly people exists. ..but it is very possible that they do exist and they have money and power on a higher scale than teenagers worshipping the devil in the woods during the 80s

Why wouldn't they exist? Is their some kind of committee with a "pie in the sky" theory that's telling everyone that they don't?

It's a difficult situation. Cults with wealth are secretive. If they do in fact perform human sacrifice ...they could be suspected of being tied into it, but be a detective yourself and try to prove it. This is what the police have been struggling with for decades. Cults are secretive. They have a certain style of murder which may not rule them out as suspects, but imposes a challenge for the police in proving the physical side to the crime .

Cults performing a ritualistic killing on a person are meticulously careful not to leave any marks on the body. If it's teenagers during the Satanic Panic scare of the 80s then that's all together a different story.

Being born to a Satanic cult through a family of wealth is actually realistic. I am not informative on practices within the Church Of Satan, but I do know that some cults in the eastern U.S. ...who are wealthy and are defined as a Satan cult or Satanic cult ...do not necessarily follow the Satanic Bible nor do they agree with the Church Of Satan and that some of their rituals derive from the writings of medieval theologians and are directly tied into Christian/Satanism and are more of a Judeo-Christian concept...which is probably forbidden by the Church Of Satan.

For many years police have consulted with ex-satanists or occultists by physically escorted them to the crime site , asking them for their expertise opinions so they can get a break in the case. Apparently this has created more confusion and false determination to draw outright incorrect conclusions than what it's worth. In some instances people will contact the police claiming the victim was murdered by witches..but remaining anonymous.

When the occultist is questioned about this they may respond " No..it couldn't have been witches...because witches are into earth magic and nature..." This will influence the police to discontinue the path they are pursuing. This is misleading and in some cases a lie because in the early 70s there were covens that professed to be witch practitioners and were into Black Magic sacrifice. They were "Dark Witches and didn't particularly have an inordinate interest in the earth.

The thing that is disturbing to me how close a cult is to the "safer" organized religions. There is only a small step between the two in some instances.

Thanks to IMDbTV, I was finally able to watch Holy Hell a few months ago. I had a fair bit of information and had seen the trailer and a number of photos (and stills taken from the documentary), but getting the other 90% of the turd pie was something else altogether.

I've long had an interest in cults and even did a short presentation on them in my sociology class years ago. The big-name cults, like Scientology and the Moonies, mainly anger me now, while the smaller insular groups and sects like Buddhafield are more intriguing. The supernatural stranglehold the founder, Michel, had on his followers was incredible because he did so by carefully and patiently working on each one, individually — the physical aspect of the abuse came later. Everyone stayed voluntarily, many of them keeping careers and keeping Michel's fridge stocked, rent paid and ego stroked (and then some). And that's just the tip of the iceberg. Shocked

The bigger the religion the more it becomes a Pyramid Scheme, with all the loot being channeled into the kings chamber.

One particular occult related story that is not covered on a YouTube video..is the story of the Bahia Vista...The Sandcastle in Egg Harbor Township N.J. It's structure was like a mansion /castle combined . F.W. Woolworth left the place to his sister Grace Hutton Middleton and his granddaughter Barbara Hutton used to visit ..spending time there....although this is the basic information you'll find everywhere on the internet...some people dispute this information.

In the 70s and 80s it was a night club. For a time it was called "Fire & Ice". One night I pulled in to check the place out. When I walked in I saw the staff dressed in black hooded cloaks and immediately thought it was some kind of gimmick or sales attraction pitch ...but at that moment I realized it wasn't Halloween ..so I had to rule that out.

I thought.." Why are these people dressed like this?" "How would this be a way of doing business?" One of the staff members conversed with me about Barbara Hutton. He said that the room at the top of the castle was the "Spirit Room " and that Barbara Hutton spent hours in the Spirit Room communicating with the dead. I had heard this story before and people have said it's merely an urban legend.

I noticed black mirrors throughout the castle . Probably no more than 5 or 6. ..but this has been disputed by others. About an hour later I in the parking lot loading instruments into my car when this strange girl showed up. She just stood there stroking a rodent. She was wearing a black cloak and holding a rat. Not something so uncommon to see when you attend "Mystery School "...

I just wanted to get out of there. Everyone was wearing occult jewelry...symbols..I thought it was mysterious, but I never believed in the Easter Bunny..so why should I believe in this.

These people acted delusional. It wasn't Halloween. It wasn't a Metal Club..so if it wasn't a gimmick..what was it ? A cult? It wasn't good and I left quickly. It was a nightmare

I worked with a woman who was a part of this cult.  It seemed really innocuous, as it was bankrolled by a natural food restaurant (the Source) in Hollywood.  But it was very insidious, from what I learned from my friend/co-worker.  http://lifeinthesourcefamily.blogspot.com/2016/03/robin-baker.html  Here is the link to a  documentary about The Source:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k9sLjXc0Tbs&ab_channel=Parable-ReligiousHistoryDocumentaries

Any religion that is not all inclusive, I would stay away from.  If they teach exclusivity, it may not be a cult, but it probably won’t do you any good either.  If they claim that theirs is the only way or that they are the chosen people, I would stay clear.

Yes, Yod-Baker was clearly a predator, just like Koresh (and Michel of Buddhafield). I saw the tidbit where he got the wonderful idea that he'd father a new "Aquarian master race" and how convenient it was that all these young women were there (in the cult). Wacko

Pretty easy to see through, but there are people who are predisposed to falling for this, often from a difficult life prior.

A good number of people joining cults..certainly not being born to that way of life...but having an interest to join ..nine hundred and nintety nine times out of a thousand enjoy being sadistic..or raping people...long before..when they were perhaps age 12. So then clearly they were a potential rapists or murderer in their childhood. Those intruding thoughts they had as a child were attractive to them. They join a cult to feel comfortable around other people who feel the same. It's usually a cult that practices ritual abuse.

A certain percentage of kids that suffer through ritual abuse become opposed to it and probably in their teen years they begin plotting an escape. I am friends with a few people that experienced this. One girl I know escaped and married a federal officer. She is well protected from the cult and their networking. These realities truly exist, but certain ritual abuse victims go public and unfortunately it can in fact be solely to make money. This is toxic to a number of people once they acknowledge that the victim has published a book. I get that..but that's no reason to trust in the publications industry. A lot of times their news story is bought and sold ..and far from the truth.

People make profit off this subject matter. There are a handful of SRA abuse victims that form workshops and turn other ritual abuse victims lives around for the better. They make a lot of money, but they invest it into a good cause as well.

I don't believe in the supernatural. I disbelieve in it when I look at people, hear their stories, and acknowledge their desire and cause to gain power. I think they're pretending to be something they are not.

I see F.W. Woolworth's crypt and I get the idea he may have been an occultist and practitioner..just like I want to grow wings and fly. Some people in my life have expressed that it's dangerous to not believe in a God . I can't relate to that mentality. I think it reveals weakness. And there's no scientific evidence that any demon or Satan himself exists. ..so their abundance of painful annoying brainwashing tactics anger me.

I lost several friends who were completely lured in by a cult's duplicitous nature. It really angers me how they destroy people's lives based on their advantage points.

Are you sure it wasn't a dress rehearsal for the masquerade sequence in Eyes Wide ShutShocked

I didn't know about Leonard Cohen.

Bassist Billy Sheehan is one, too.

And this guy. Wink

Tom Cruise and maybe even Richard Gere (not all that sure about the latter - he's in a sect, but maybe not Hubbard's).

I hear Cruise and Corea are being relentlessly pushy about joining up. Chick has even ejected musos from his band, because they told him off about his beliefs .

Tom Cruise is the most high-profile Scieno, which is why I didn't mention them. You'd have to have spent the last fifty years in Antarctica to miss that one. (The same goes for Travolta, but I had to post that pic, haha.)

Gere has been a practicing Buddhist since the '70s. He's not in any kind of strange sect, AFAIK.

Joe Farrell famously rebuffed Chick's proselytizing.

In essence, any and every religion is a cult. Religion rhymes with submission. And if you want that, then go for it. Not my thing, though.
There are many and many documentaries on cults and religions, just browse the imdb if you are really interested in it. I'm not going to serve you on this.

Vineland had a cult practice and it wasn't good as some people living in the town began to panic over the disappearances of children..in particular Billy Jones who vanished when I was a kid. Some of the locals began spreading a rumor that a Satan cult abducted him.

The police had an idea that he was murdered and his body dumped or buried at the "Palace Of Depression " The Palace Of Depression was built by an eccentric George Daynor. The place itself looked bewitching and he built it out of junkyard parts and became a source of entertainment for children and teenagers on the weekends not unlike The Brigantine Castle or any other horror amusement in South Jersey.

The first occult crime in Vineland NJ was in 1957..but I'm certain to believe there were more in the past, it's just impossible to find the newspaper articles. Someone told me that the Menantico Cult ritual which took place in 1971..also took place in 1871 ..in the same area..and that I should find the newspaper article on microfiche. The library records do not date back that far and there are people who sware that they researched it in the 70s when supposedly the library did have the old articles readily available.
I find that to be strange

In 1957 Juan Rivera Aponte of Vineland NJ was convicted for the murder of 13 year old Roger Carletto. He murdered Carletto to gain possession of his powdered skull as part of a Black Magic spell. Documented and an isolated case.

Something strange occurred in Vineland after the Menantico cult killing. Perhaps it was the year after the ritualistic killing at Menantico that it began. People started reporting cult sightings. They would describe a cult in robes walking people into the water. They were tied and bound and surfboarded in the face down position. ..so they could drown and return as a captain to rule over 40 leagues of demons. This occurred all through the remainder of the 70s. Why? Were they copy cats?

Why did they want to repeat the Menantico cult ritual? The Menantico cult were middle aged adults and only a few teenagers belonging. The copy cats were all teenagers who formed Satan cults on their own.

The 3rd Generation Watchtower Society held separate meetings or secret meetings where they tried to channel a demon through a young girl. They would place paper in front of the girl and a feathered pen in her writing hand. They would chant while the girl performed this kind of Automatic Writing. Then they would decipher the words . Other times they lowered the girl into a snake pit , standing above the pit chanting. The snakes were dead and not threatening to the girl...but it was a disturbing series of events. They were interested in a Luciferian practice no doubt and this took place off of Mill Road in Vineland. In Mill Woods to be precise.

I remember hanging out at Brenner's Brew (closed now) in Bridgeton, NJ, and was talking about Michael Ford of Hexentanz and Luciferians and this tall dude comes from the back of the shop "What do you know about Luciferians??" I was a bit taken aback but spoke to him, which he proclaimed himself as a Luciferian. He turned out to be a rather frightening sort-stalking the owner of the shop and threatening certain of her friends.

I thought this thread was focused more on the present day. There's been all manner of evil perpetrated by humans "in the name of" numerous religions in times past (and today, of course). I'd rather this thread maintain its focus on the last century, on the weird cults therein, and documentaries.

Why some people follow charismatic "leaders" is the real problem with cults, that in the present day extends to political figures too. I'm afraid that there is no set answer for this, just theories, unfortunately.

Apostasy (and fatwahs) for muslims is contemporaneous.... but then again islam started +/- 600 years later than christianity did...
Soooo  islam could just have its own inquisition some 600 years after the christian one ended (so they said >> hundred of sorcerers and witches have been killed since)

Very creepy. I've been approached by several individuals belonging to cults over the years. I've been asked on several occasions to join which I turned down. The reason being that I always wore black. I played in many bands in the 70s and 80s and always wore black. Is that any reason to ask a person to join a cult? Idk? 😃 The response or immediate reaction from these characters would always be..."Oh..but I heard you practiced witchcraft " or.."But I hear you worshipped Satan"...but, but, but, but, l heard.. me, me, my, my, ...BS...pure BS... 😃

Indeed, the war seems to have created a pandemic of short-sightedness (or worse... short-memory/selected amnesia).

As much I grieve for Ukrainians (refugees or those staying put) , I find this "total" support a bit sickening, certainly nauseating and totally hypocrite.

But then again this is the age of those disgusting asocial medias, where hypocrisy is the religion.

The way you are describing this guy ...he sounds like a real jerk. "What do you know about Luciferians?" That could be taken as a challenge instead a conversation.

And what if you did know about Luciferians? Maybe you read about them ..what difference does it make? The guy might have been egotistical..and what was on his agenda?

This is a true story. A real experience I had at age 22. My first wife was born in a cult and when she was a baby there was some kind of ceremony that revolved around her. Whatever that was..I do not know.

During the second year of our marriage I discovered that her Mother's side of the family were some kind of cult..or perhaps a coven of witches that practiced Black Magic..I am unsure.

My first wife was trying to be a Christian. She went to Bible study with friends and studied the Bible at home. She kept going back to the occult and spiritually tormented between both forces or beliefs.

One night I was listening to music with a friend and we heard a crash at the door. I ran to the door and found my wife spread across the steps..blood everywhere..it was ridiculous. I grabbed a blanket and wrapped it around her. I carried her to the car , placed her in the back seat and saw that she had been sliced up badly...only these were carvings of pentagrams and other occult symbols carved into her flesh. Her legs and arms were covered with them. I couldn't stop the bleeding and so I drove her to the ER.

On the way there my friend said that he noticed the occult symbols carved into her body and he asked me.."Does she belong to some kind of cult?" I told him that I definitely thought it was a cult that did this to her.

When we arrived to the ER I carried her in my arms with blood everywhere and and nurses placed her on a stretcher and brought her in immediately.

I sat with my friend in the waiting room and after about 30 minutes we were approached by a doctor and two police officers. The doctor explained that he found traces of Cocaine in her nostrils and the police officers said that she was part of a drug deal gone bad.

I said..."She's in a cult! " "Check her body and look at the occult symbols " The police officer said.."No..it's not a cult" "There is no cult"

I got into this heated argument with one of the officers who refused to investigate it. He told me to stop with the cult stuff and leave if I don't. My friend didn't back me up. I was really angered by the situation. Could anyone tell me why this may have happened? Or...please give me an idea why you think the police and doctor refused to believe it....I apologize for getting personal and going off thread ...I'm just trying to understand why this happened..

Jacob, the only reason(s) they would insist "there's no cult" and warn you to stop it, is that they were aware of it and didn't want to tangle with it, or they're part of it.

The friend was probably intimidated by authority which is why they didn't back you up.

As for the police, they might have thought "They're making this cult thing to cover up the drug dealing" but if there's some cult dealing, then they have to get their hands dirty.

I was never into satanism, although i had been accused of it and i find that and other occult interesting. I think because I grew up in the 1970's where all that was in the counter culture and in the 1980's where it was taboo. I have talking boards and tarot cards and listen to metal and Coven, but I do not feel the need to go plunging headlong into Satanism. My curiosity into it was simply to find out why someone would convert to Satanism when the religious say it is condemnation into eternal damnation. There had to be something that attracted people to it. First, I found Satanism is not "Devil worship"-in fact, in their beliefs, they abhor the idea of "grovelling" before a Supreme Being. They also believe that Satan or Lucifer was betrayed by God when showing Adam and Eve love and view the giving of the apple as a metaphor for giving humans knowledge. Knowledge is a key thing for Satanists.

But more importantly, I noticed most Satanists and Luciferians came from oppressively religious backgrounds. I can only think that Satanism and Luciferianism are more of reactionary-that the converts view it as an escape from what they view as overbearing superstition, ignorance and rigid adherence.

A few stories to shar⁸e about cults. In high school I was very close with a girl who was like a sister to me. She rode the school bus with the young man that was sacrificed at Menantico. Most people who got to know him said that he studied all religions, had a great sense of humor,..although could be quiet at times.

He had a box made out of metal. On the outside of the box were carvings of Egyptian hieroglyphics. On the inside were hallways that led through a maze. He would open the door of the box and place an animal inside. He would then slam the door piercing the animal with sharp nails located on the inside of the door. Quite like an iron maiden.

He graduated from sacrificing hamsters to Satan to resurrecting himself from the dead. The ritual he performed was rather obscure it seems as lots of people in Vineland NJ sit around a campfire drinking and discuss where he got the idea. Supposedly if you are in a specific place at a specific time with your two closest friends...who assist you in your death...it will work. You die violently so you can be put in charge of 40 leagues of demons.

The use of human sacrifice is older than recorded history and can be found in the Bog Burials, but what is the origin of this ritual? Where is it written? The difficulty in this case is that his sacrifice is directly tied into Christian/Satanism in his belief that his self-sacrifice would engender the protection of Christian demons. Like a role playing game it was strictly based on Christian demonology. His reference to 40 leagues or 40 legions is a Judeo-Christian concept derived from the writings of medieval theologians where demons had hierarchies and legions.

Some people claim it is written in the Satanic Bible, but I've never read the Satanic Bible so I would not know. Some people say that he was interested in Egyptian culture and that he studied the Egyptian book of the Dead and that he connected with the knowledge of the ritual that way.

Others claim that he garbled a ritual from a modern book on demonology or a modern translation. One individual in particular stated: "Whatever ritual he was trying to use was so hopelessly screwed up in his mind interpretation to be more tragic and stupid than ritualistic..but he was definitely responding to something he had read and believed."

Police dug up the lake and discovered animal remains. Charles Pangburn searched the young man's room and discovered books on Egyptian culture, witchcraft, demonology, and the Satanic Bible..additionally he confiscated literature dealing with the young man's cult that he refused to reveal. The two friends who assisted him in his death spent 5 years in Yardville Prison. After their release they both continued their involvement with a cult. While they did their time in prison..Pangburn spent two years interrogating a church and a list of wealthy individuals (middle age adults) belonging to a cult.

It's possible that Pangburn may have confiscated a diary belonging to the young man which gave him reason or cause to investigate further. In 1972 in Springfield NJ the skeleton remains of Jeannette DePalma were discovered on top of a cliff called the Devil's Tooth. Although this case was totally confusing regarding all the suspects and the letters written to the police..DePalma belonged to the Assembly Of God church . The church that was under investigation by Pangburn and his team of detectives and officers in 1971.

What kind of evidence did Pangburn have ? What would lead him to believe that a wealthy organization was behind this murder? I've always been curious about it. What could it have possibly been?

You seem to be getting mixed up with Gnosticism, which translates as having knowledge.

"In the Gnostic creation myth, Heaven – which the Gnostics called the "pleroma" “Fullness” – was all that existed until a divine entity named Sophia tried to conceive on her own, without the involvement of her heavenly partner or the consent of God. Sophia gave birth to a son that was the product of the rebellious and profane desire that had arisen within her.

...

When Sophia saw the horrifying, twisted being that had come from her, she was deeply ashamed and afraid. She disowned him and cast him out of Heaven.

From his lonely position where his madness and conceit could go unchecked, the demiurge gave birth to the archons (“rulers”), beings who were like him and could help him administer the material world. He then created the material world, which, like all creations, was a reflection of the personality of its creator.

The demiurge then created Adam and Eve and imprisoned divine sparks from Heaven within them. He told them that he was the only god and issued the Ten Commandments, even though he himself broke each and every one of those commandments. For example, he lied when he claimed to be the only god and that Adam and Eve would die if they ate the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil; he insulted his mother and father by refusing to acknowledge their existence; he made a graven image of the divine when he modeled the material world on his corrupt and ignorant misunderstanding of Heaven; and he committed adultery by attempting to rape Eve."

In the late 60s and early 70s there was a "Duo Worship " concept..or belief system in Vineland NJ. God in the day, Satan of the night. Vineland was the largest city geographically and it contained industry, but less housing development for years..which meant there were many open fields and loads of wooded areas where these groups worshipped. I'm uncertain if they were a cult.

The Church Of Satan existed on the west coast of the U.S. during this time...however I don't believe it had anything to do with Judeo-Christian concepts and these groups in Vineland certainly did.

People living in Vineland during that time practiced witchcraft, but not so much Wicca. Several people practiced witchcraft and belonged to ...( what people defined back then ) as a Satan cult. Witchcraft and devil Worship were separated and I believe people enjoyed being part of both worlds..because obviously it was vast in Vineland...for whatever reason?

I believe two things are being conflated here. There are "Satan worshipping" cults and there is the notion of an eliteist child sacrificing cult which goes back to the blood libel, introduced to literally demonise any faction that people might deem "the other".

The former is protected by the freedom of religion act and the latter is propaganda tool used as a weapon to elicit fear and drum up support, particularly within evangelical types.

The two elements have been melded into one thing lately particularly thanks to the efforts of those behind the QAnon game.

Fear is always a big seller in the conspiracy community.

cults do not have to be religious, by the way. There are non-religious cults, such as NXIVM

Sure, there are cults of personality like Kim Jong Un, Stalin, Hitler... but even these cults have a certain religious aspect to them, particularly when it concerns worship and fealty.

What actually outrages me (not alone here, apparently) is your new avatar that is almost insulting to the EU, showing Zelenski in front of a EU flag... especially coming from a Brit, whose country left because it didn't want to be part of that.
So easy to push a victim in someone else's arms but your own.
Maybe the UK should include Ukraine inside the United Kingdom. TongueLOL

This toxic, but charismatic (for some anyways) clown in your avatar - no better than your own BoJo (the clownClown) -  has tried forcefully/blackmailingly to get into NATO and EU without any delay.

Last time an actor was president of a country (in the 80's), it was disatrous as well.

But if you want me to discuss about how NATO has become a toxic tool for weapon manufacturers, I could indulge, another day.

Not to get political, but flagrant bashes on the US is a huge reason I think it is time the US left NATO and the UN. We should not be involved with what is going on over there. When we are involved, it is viewed as an annoyance. We just ended (badly) a 20 year war. Why are we involved in one that has nothing to do with us. Europe can handle this!

mmmmhhhh!!!...Ying Yang

I'd hate to think of this planet's state without USA's involvment in both UN and NATO. Overall, the USA's role has been positiveHug, but one should accept criticism.

Seriously, The USA is a key member and rightly so, especially in the depth of the cold War - even if the cold war was +/- started by them (the Truman Crusade) and its hate of communism (look at Hoover & McCarthy's purges during the 50/60's). Of course the creation of NATO was vital to keep peace in the northern hemisphere for +/- 80 years and in 95% of the cases, troubles were happening in the "southern" hemisphere (read: whatever is south of Caucasian - white race - countries) is not to be imputed to NATO at all. Until the Yougoslavien disater (though Nato had nothing to do with that either, u ntil the UN sent them in) and now this present crisis.

But by some of NATO's members (those with "empires on whose the sun sun never sets" and the wish to keep it), like France, UK, Portugal, Netherlands, (Belgium to a lesser extent, since its empire was in the same time zone :-) ) and the US (whose empire was basically The Philippines, but considered Latin America to be its backyard).

The trouble is that those amed forces that are supposed to be keeping the peace (like NATO) are being courted constantly by weapons manufacturers - who want to increase their sales and find new markets (Ukraine or Georgia, for ex). This is valid for all coutries that have weapons industries (Belgium as well - and not just FN guns sold to "iffy states", like Saudi Arabia and the invasion of Yemen) and sometimes undermining their allies (the recent Australian submarine crisis).

Just out of curiosity, I checked which US president since WW2 ended did not throw its armed forces into a conflict during its mandate(s) and came up with just two of them: Carter (76/80), and perhaps much more surprisingly: Trump.... and Biden (so far). Of course some of them inherited the situation from the predecessors (Biden from Dubya, for ex).
All of the others have blood on their hands, whether I like it (and them) or not. Even Bill and Obama did.

I'll handle the internal NATO aspects elsewhere (or another time), but indeed, most of the European lands are fully aware that it relied too heavily on the USA's efforts without pulling their weight in the process.

Anyways, I'd hate the USA to go back to its isolationism of Pre WW1&2.

life without Duke, Trane Elvis, his Bobness and a few others woudn't be the same.Heart

Anyways, I'd hate the USA to go back to its isolationism of Pre WW1&2.

life without Duke, Trane Elvis, his Bobness and a few others woudn't be the same.Heart

it is not mere "not taking criticism": when we do not choose people you want as our leaders, Europe depicts us as drowning Nazis in natural disasters, holds parliamentary sessions to insult us and try to figure out what to do with us, people write about how to remove the person you do not like-why are we allies with people who think we are dumb af? fight your own wars. fund yourselves. I would love to see a move back to isolationism.

It's a little easier for the rest of the world to see the US as "dumb af" when they look at who the US has elected as their president these last 50 years.

America, the great experiment, a shining beacon of demoracy and the example for the rest of the world to follow, is getting it wrong.

Could DS (please) elaborate which european country "holds parliamentary sessions to insult us", because I'm not aware - and certainly doesn't concern the EU parliament itself.
Yeah, sure, most of the countries had a problem with the trade wars Trump started, which coincided with the Brexit's custom taxes installations.  And indeed, the global warming denial of the former adminstration certainly did not help, but the new one has straightened that out - remains to be seen whether they will d anything about it, though.
Most parliaments of our countries seems "sold to the US" from the street's perspective.
And the street's opinion doesn't reflect the silent majority (despite what the former claims) and I'm not sure the press is really independant in reflecting the silent ones.
FTM, for some european intellectuals (usually leftists), it's still quite irritating that the majority (silent or not) are simply "aping" (read blindly foloowing) whatever goes on the the USA.

================

Generally the cricism regarding US Presidents is aimed at the Republicans (Dubya &Trump), not the Democrats: Clinton & Obama were/are still quite popular here, but the general jury is still out for Biden.

But yeah, one can really wonder about all elected leaders in the Occident and the rising populism is worrysome (Conservatives in the UK, Orban in Hungary, the dude in Poland, the possibility of Le Pen in France, etc... ). Europeans should indeed sweep their doorstep before giving morality lessons to others.

And that "occidental phenomena" is global-wise, Bolsonaro in Brazil, the idiot in The Philippines, Erdogan in Turkey, etc...

True, that's why I bailed out. Plus it's the same old blah, blah, blah.

We were 17/18-ish and my buddy & I were walking down the Yonge Street strip (downtown Toronto) - hunting for records (something like 15 shops within two kms, plus a few used record shops on adjacent streets).

There is this all-dressed-up dude that proposed us to do this IQ test for free, but I smelled something fishy, but my buddy didn't. He went in and I felt I needed to keep an eye on him so I went in as well.

He took the test (something like two hours long) and I stood by him (refused to do the test) and didn't even take a sip of the drink available - I was on total alert.
They didn't want to give him the result that day (though they had promised at the entrance).
Something I'd never done before (or since) but I told my buddy's father about this - I still had no real idea of what, though.

Three days later the IQ test results were in and brought by two dudes in suits at my buddy's house (we were playing pool in his garage with the door opened) - middle of summer and parents gone working/shopping.
I knew his dad's work number and phoned him up from the living room (gone in "to get refreshments"), and within 30 mins, he was home throwing out of the house the two scientologists (who hadn't unveiled themselves as of yet).

Heavy tensions between me and my buddy for a couple of weeks, but he ended up thanking me.

Oh, Scientologists, they will so regret their wasted lives.   It's tragic.
