Because I think Marillion will win easy and is the most famous, and for sure one of the best, I choose one is little known and damn great Abel Ganz - Gratuitous Flash

1. Abel Ganz
2. Pallas
3. Solstice

I certainly bought all the albums from the top half of this list when they came out (although I didn't catch up with Twelfth Night until the excellent Fact and Fiction).  Does anybody remember that wonderful Fire in Harmony compilation that came out in 85 featuring many of these bands who didn't quite get a record deal - Quasar, Liaison etc.?

I've never heard of Liaison, but Quasar's debut album from 1982 is quite good. I can't say i like the rest of their work though.

You are talking about this compilation, right?

Marillion by a rather large margin.

Some fine bands, but it's really very difficult to see beyond Script...

IQ for me.

Interesting - at the time the only serious contender to Marillion was Pallas rather than IQ.  I am sure others that 'were there' would bear this out.

^ I can only speak for myself, but at that time - mid 80s - Pallas was for me almost on par with Marillion and preferred over IQ, Pendragon, Twelfth Night... And I've seen them live more often than Marillion.

^ True (I almost forgot to vote). It is the most accomplished of them all, imo. But I'm still fond of The Sentinel... (and The Jewel and Smiling at Grief and Tales From the Lush Attic...)

2 IQ
3 Pallas

Yep, it is a fantastic album, and so are the other two, but there is a reason why Marillion were and have remained the most successful of all these bands, and that is because their output has been consistently better.

My favourite lp of that period is 'Fact and Fiction' by Twelfth Night but of this list it has to be 'Tales from the Lush Attic' by IQ. Script and The Jewel are also great as is Silent Dance by Solstice.

The Sentinel by Pallas has some great parts but is patchy but i did see them live in Bristol on that tour and they were a great sounding and hard working live band.

sorry to be predictable  but I've gone for Script.

Not sure what I'd have gone for in 2nd place. Both The Sentinel and Lush Attic are great albums

I don't know all these and was never a great Marillion fan although Fugazi hits the spot for me.
Voted IQ pretty much by default although it's certainly a fine debut album if a bit frenetic at times. They have done some very sweet live versions of those tracks over the years that are actually better than the originals. It does however still carry a 'punky' charm in its own right.

Picked Pallas with 'The Sentinel'.

1- Marillion - Script for a Jester's Tear
2- IQ - Tales From The Lush Attic
3- Pallas - The Sentinel
4- Arena - Songs from the Lions Cage
5- Satellite - A Street Between Sunrise And Sunset

OBS: I know that "The Sentinel" was Pallas' first official studio album, but wouldn't it be more interesting to put "Arrive Alive"? It is a live album but all songs (except the title track) are exclusive to this album (Queen of the Deep, The Ripper, Paris is Burning...) and were not included in the studio albums. It's an album almost as important as the other studio albums.

True, but I only put official studio albums.
For instance IQ released a cassette in 1982 called Seven Stories into Eight which they re-released on CD years later in 1998 plus a much better re-recording.
