Topic: First tracks or LPs you'd play in a new homePosted By: Cosmiclawnmower
Subject: First tracks or LPs you'd play in a new home
Date Posted: May 02 2022 at 12:34
We've recently moved to our new house which we've been renovating for the last 18 months; normally my stereo would be the first thing to be installed for cool sounds to accompany the unpacking of boxes etc. This time its taken a bit longer than usual (2 weeks!) and ive finally been able to welcome myself home to the sounds of Pat Metheny (Travels, Still Life talking), Hatfield and the North (Rotter's club), Can (Future Days) and Ozric Tentacles (Jurrassic Shift, Pungent Effulgent).
What would be the first tracks or lps would you play upon moving into a new home and why?

English Sunset, Moody Blues.
Karn Evil 9 2nd part 1st Movement, ELP
Songs From the Wood, Jethro Tull
Your Move/All Good People, Yes

I did a massive reno about 11 years ago. I think one of, if not THE, first thing I listened to was ELP Trilogy, then a rockin' assorted CD.

Probably a bit on the nose...but the first track to came to mind. I've lived in the same house since I was 3 years old, so have never really experienced moving into a new home.

I don't know, but the first album I did buy and listen to when I moved to Queensland in 1992 was Red Hot Chili Peppers - Blood Sugar Sex Magik. I imagine that if I were to move in the future, the first album I would listen to would depend on the circumstances at the time and not directly on the move itself.

Congratulations, John. I hope you are happy in the new shack.
My first track would be non-prog. That old staple, Our House by CSN. If I were pressed to name a prog track, I would plump today for that lovely Garden of Senses by Jon & Vangelis.

I moved into my home in 2008 (still there) and I believe the first thing I listened to was my own stuff as I was hooking up my computer with my stereo to get everything working again. Other than that, I can't recall what I listened to and hadn't even considered unpacking music.

Thanks all, some great suggestions!! Ive had to move about a lot with work over the years so its been a fairly regular occurrence! This is our final move and requires a special musical celebration!!

Great question, and something fun I can relate to, and have done before. I too like the idea of setting up the stereo to have going while doing the move-on.
It's been awhile since I last moved, so I can't remember what I did before.
Whatever you pick, it should be special!

Well, you mentioned Pat Metheny. That's hard to top.

The first few albums I actually played when we moved into the house we live in was something likebasically: Lee Hazlewood - Trouble is a Lonesome Town, Jethro Tull - Benefit, Joni Mitchell - Ladies of the Canyon and America - St. Love them all, but it was mainly because there were people working here all the time and I pretended to be "normal".
If I felt I could play anything, I'd choose something in the line of: Eric Dolphy - Out to Lunch, Weather Report - St, Terje Rypdal - Whenever I Seem to be Far Away, Herbie Hancock - Crossings and Miles Davis - Water Babies. I enjoy the sound of them filing up a room or space. Can - Future Days is one I'd consider myself.

If I were to move into a new home and wanted a ceremonial track to kick things off, something by Can would be my first choice - either from Tago Mago or from Future Days.
I remember 20+ years ago when I moved into my first (non-rental) home, the first thing I played (on a CD boombox) was the “Aftertaste” album by Helmet. Loved that album, and still do.

Hi,
Tangerine Dream - Phaedra.
"Mysterious Semblance at the Strand of Nightmares" inaugurated my new speakers.

I was thinking about this topic yesterday, and this is what I would have written then and now. Not Prog, but when I moved into this house, the first thing I remember playing not on earbuds or headphones (on external speakers) was Giorgio Moroder's Cat People soundtrack. There is something comforting in my 80s nostalgia and I love things on the electronica side.
If I moved into a new house now, then I would want to play Kosmischer Läufer's The Secret Cosmic Music of the East German Olympic Program 1972-83: Volume Three, which I find magical/ wondrous in its way. This is modern electronic music pretending to be of the past and also has nostalgia value for me. I really like the project.

The first for everything is always Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon. The one time I didn't and played Tangerine Dream's Le Parc in the new car stereo, it shortly afterward got stolen. Lesson learned!

Homeworld (The Ladder) by Yes. What else? ;)
Another possibility might be "our house" by Crosby Stills Nash and Young. The Madness song with the same title is great too. However, I can't afford to buy a house so they might not be appropriate. The same thing with "you can never go home" by the Moody Blues if I've just moved into a new home.

I like The Ladder, i think its a sunny upbeat lp so its a good suggestion.. and 'homeworld' is very appropriate!
Lazland mentioned the CSNY song which is great and Deja Vu has already had a spin.
'Home' by Roy Harper (the studio version of which features Ian Anderson on flute) is a great homecoming song
and of course 'where i lay my hat, thats my home' by Marvin Gaye (then Paul Young) just about sums up everywhere ive lived up to now..

I'm moving my parent's house in a month. So it will definitely will be Pharrell Williams - Happy! Also, another reason for joy is the fact that I hired a moving company. I'm going to be moving to Cornwall hopefully by the end of the year with Sister, Brother in law and Mum. It's a large property with very separate sections and fortunately I can play anything as loud as I like as the walls are very thick. Once I get my CD collection and hi-fi in place it will inevitably be ELP's Brain Salad Surgery followed by some Yes and Rush. ELP's stonking version of Jerusalem seems as good a point to start as any.

Cornwall's great, but Devon is better! No, i'm very fond of Cornwall and have had job offers there over many years but just couldnt afford to get on the property ladder there.. still spend a fair bit of time down that way with work. Good luck with your move, and great music choices for warming up your new home!

Its a bit of a tradition with me that when I set up anything new, or test anything I've just connected the first artist I play is Adam Ant.
As it happens I will be moving soon after having lived where I am for nearly 15 years, so I anticipate that the first album I play will be Adam Ant, probably Vive Le Rock, but possibly Wonderful or Manners and Physique

I think I would need a song that sends out signals to explore the space … something like Tom Sawyer by Rush or Schism by Tool. Nah … Moving On by Triumph would be fine.
