The unchallenged No.1 music festival in Switzerland (since 1967) and a major festival in Europe.
A global music community bringing artists and music lovers together through intimate concerts in
unique places. Take a look, it's worth it. Maybe there's a gig round the corner that you didn't even
Hi everybody and welcome to the latest edition in this
interactive poll series!
It’s mid-September and we can look back on an eventful and
exciting season of concerts and festivals. After a two-year break due to the
pandemic, public cultural events could finally take place again. Let’s
celebrate this!
Note: In case you are not much of a festival or
concert goer, get inspired by programs of concerts that have already taken
place or will take place nearby.
So here are the guidelines:
1. Choose artists or bands whose concerts you have
attended or would have liked to attend this year but for some reason you have
missed. Gigs you plan to attend this year do also count.- In this context, it can exceptionally also be about the somewhat better known artists. But please, avoid names we have heard here many times before.
2. The songs or tracks should preferably be from the latest release
of the respective artist or band.- In the case of classical music, the 'release
date' does not matter here, of course. The date and venue where the concert took place is
sufficient.
3. You can suggest as many tracks as you like but only
up to 2 tracks over the nominating period.- Try to be as diverse as possible in terms of genre.
4. Lesser known artists on PA are allowed but in case you choose one of those you should
also consider other genres.
5. Illustrate in some way, where and when these concerts have
taken place or will take place, e.g. by posting the respective concert program/festival line-up (website link or poster), or videos that your concerts were promoted with. Videos of live performances are of course more than welcome.
5. You have about one week to make your suggestions and nominations.
If you can, help each other make their selection.
6. The number of votes will depend on the number of
participants and will therefore be determined later. But either way, you will get to vote for your favourites, except for your own contributions.
7. Comments are welcome at any stage of the poll.
And now, let the poll begin . .
Enjoy & have fun!

I haven't seen much this year, but here's one thing. Einstuerzende Neubauten in Bologna in May, this is two days earlier, I think.
Evidence (not sure whether this enhances the poll experience much, but...)
By the way, I loved this gig. Much they do these days is rather calm and subtle, and there is very little nostalgia in their show (I think nothing they played was older than 2000, which is a bit of a pity as I'm a fan of most of their 80s/90s material), but I like a band that still develops and tries out new things, even if many of them are not quite as wild and earth shaking as in the early days. All their material is very unmistakably Neubauten, even if they changed quite a bit over time.

^ Hey Christian, this is really awesome! I hope I will have a chance to watch these guys live as long as they are active. And don't worry, the subject is broadly defined. If you haven't attended that many gigs's yet you can also mention gigs that you would have liked to attend this year but for some reason you have missed. Gigs you plan to attend do also count. ;)

Unfortunately, I haven't been going to concerts for a few years now.
Between pandemics, a two-year-old daughter, and a broken leg, I've had to overdo it (with the exception of Van der Graaf and Springsteen).
This year, if I look at the concert calendar in Italy, I would have gladly seen Counting Crows, and then since I was on vacation in Puglia I would have gone to Melpignano to the Taranta festival, but there was too much bedlam.
So here are my two songs: an American roots rock song, and an Italian folk song, from southern Italy, very southern, maybe too much southern, but I as a continental northern Italian have to deal with this piece of Italy too!
1) Counting Crows - Elevator Boots
2) Festival de La Taranta - From 1.41.30 up to 1.50.10.

Ah, and just two days later (after Einstuerzende Neubauten) I saw Matmos. My suggestion is this video, which is actually from 2019. This is from the wonderful Plastic Anniversary album, from which they still played a lot 2022 in Bologna. (Correction: It's actually not on Plastic Anniversary, the track below is.)
Actually there's even a clip of the concert where I was on yt, but the video isn't quite as good, and some may find this track seriously annoying, even though I like it, so this is just "the evidence".
I have now seen them for the third time, and I can never go wrong with these guys.

Nice theme for an interactive poll! Though not necessarily an easy one in this not-yet-post-covid epoch. (and also to find live videos...).
I discovered Tindersticks at the closing party of the Rotterdam Film Festival in 1993. They just had their first album out (or maybe just not yet) and I didn't know them at all, but I was most pleasantly surprised by the exquisite quality of this band at "just" a closing party... Have several of their albums since, but never saw them live again. That will happen this 13 October in Nîmes. It will be in a relatively new venue: Paloma. I've never been there, but the acoustics seem to be outstanding (nothing spectacular on their website though; https://paloma-nimes.fr/agenda/tindersticks-3-event-29605/" rel="nofollow - here a link to the page where they announce the concert).
Couldn't find a live rendition of a track from their latest album (and not many videos have a decent sound quality), so this is an older track, but from a live performance this year...
Tindersticks - My Sister (Live in Paris, April 2022):
But, you want new music, so here is a track from their latest studio album "Distractions": Tindersticks - The Bough Bends:

Thanks a lot for joining the poll, Kees! A live video is a nice to have but it is not really necessary. Feel free to choose any of their, more or less recent material and add e.g. the link of the venue website or something like that. I could still additionaly include your live video in the playlist, even if it is not the same song. For me it is mainly about our personal relation to the chosen artists, with reference to the present. Btw. a venue by itself can also be an interesting extra info for an outsider.

Let me start with this one:
Brandão Faber Hunger: Derfi di hebe (Album: Ich liebe Dich, 11/12/2020)
https://ichliebedich.li/" rel="nofollow - Artist Info/Tour Dates and https://lyricstranslate.com/de/derfi-di-hebe-may-i-hold-you.html" rel="nofollow - Lyrics Translation
This album is a collaboration of the Swiss singer-songwriters Sophie Hunger, Faber and Dino Brandão. It was created during the lockdown period. Love is the main theme of this album, made during a very difficult time, where concerts could not take place anymore and the three therefore sort of 'got stuck' in their home country. The special thing about this album is also that all songs were written in the Swiss German dialect. Sophie Hunger and Faber are also known beyond the Swiss borders; they normally perform in German, French or English.- The trio is currently on tour and I’m going to attend their concert in Zurich on 19. December. 'Kaufleuten', is a relatively small venue, so that the concert can take place in an intimate atmosphere, where this kind of music can be well appreciated.

My pleasure! And I was already asking myself if it had to be a live track or if I could propose a studio track from their latest album (well, their latest is a compilation thing celebrating their 30th anniversary...). Almost added one yesterday, so will do so now: I'll ad it to my initial post.

Up next (No.2):
Marc Ribot's Ceramic Dog: Bertha the Cool (Album: Hope, 2021)
Concert date: 1. May 2022 @ https://www.moods.club/de/programm/event/11624/marc-ribot-ceramic-dog.html" rel="nofollow - Moods Jazz Club
I have always wanted to see Marc Ribot live. He
was here a couple of years ago but for some reason I missed his concert back
then.- I'm gald I got a second chance. This gig last May was a unique experience to remember. I am not sure if
his latest album is as good as the previous one also with his Ceramic Dog trio, because
it was created under adverse circumstances during the lock-down period. Anyway, this gig was definitely a great experience and I can highly recommend it. The Moods Jazz Club in Zurich never
disappoints!

I saw Marc Ribot long, long ago, probably between 1990 and 1995, and somehow lost track of him for no good reason. Nice to have him in this poll. Hunger & Faber also well known names here, although I have never seen them live.

I do enjoy going to live music shows. Haven't been this year except to see some cover bands. The only show I want to post-lockdowns was Primus for their Tribute to Kings tour. That was great with Black Mountain opening. My tickets were bought pre-pandemic, so it had been postponed teice. But, Primus has an EP out this year, so in honor of my last real concert, and an excellent tune in my opinion..

Sorry as I have mentioned these names of acts before, but these are the two that would be most relevant to me unless I mentioned Stereolab's support act.
Other than some free concerts over the last year, I haven't been to any concerts; however, I am planning to go see Stereolab on Septemeer 24 in Vancouver at the Commodore (I just missed out on their last concert). Here is a track off their last studio album which was back in 2010 (decided to go with a shorter one).
Stereolab: "Sun Demon" off Not Music (which looks on the albums cover like SNOT MUSIC (released Nov. 2010)

For more of a wishful thinking choice, I had hoped to travel to England and Scotland this year, and take in some concerts, and Anna von Hausswolff is the one that I would most like to see in concert.
Here is a track from the first song of the released early this year live album, Live at Montreux Jazz Festival.
Anna von Hausswolff: "The Truth, the Glow, the Fall" (Live at Montreux - released 14 January 2022 and recorded back in 2018)
There are some more interesting and new to me cities that I would rather see her, but mosty likely had I had the chance, then I would have see her at Union Chapel on September 16. https://www.wegow.com/en-ca/nr/concerts/anna-von-hausswolff-concert-in-london-union-chapel" rel="nofollow - Anna von Hausswolff at Union Chapel, London, England on Sept. 16
Other than that, to mention one I have mentioned many times, from an earlier one I would have loved to see Portishead for the War Child UK Benefit Concert in Bristol on May 2nd. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FLX8LRILfj0" rel="nofollow - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FLX8LRILfj0

The Dream Syndicate in October will be in Italy: Milan and Bologna (Christian!).
I don't think I'll go to their concert, but I'd love to. I love Steve Wynn (I already posted a Syndicate song and a couple of Wynn songs in the polls)

^ Indeed, the idea of this poll is, among other things, to inspire people to take a look at the concert calendar again, after a long time.- On the youtube channel of your Taranta Festival there is a playlist including videos of individual performances from the 2022 Festival. Maybe you could choose one of those instead of the full concert one above? ;) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9iVpy47wSao&list=PLV4QLErvq4tzFvLFbPWYVsGJ7KAXW9oie" rel="nofollow - Notte della Taranta 2022

Aquaserge: Un grand sommeil noir (Album: A Possibility of a New Work for Aquaserge, 2021)

There is a cultural centre in the industrial area of my
hometown, where I hang out quite frequently. That’s where I attended a gig of
this quite amazing French avant-rock band, back in June. Some here will already know
them, I guess. But as far as I can remember, I don't think that the band has appeared in the polls recently. - Another band who’s concert I’ve attended in August, at another
venue in my city, I’ve introduced in Nicks ‘2022 Favourites’ poll. It's this Istanbul-based band Lalalar.

@ Christian
Aquaserge are pretty good live. They are fresh and energetic and thus rocked the audience! As for my other choices, I have already introduced a couple of less know artists here whose concerts I have attended this year. I have one or two more in store, but I think that they are not quite what you guys are after. lol
I find Matmos quite amazing! Thanks for introducing them. Their first piece is quite accessible although they are very experimental. This rhythm is really infectious and makes me wanna dance! - I struggle a bit with the Neubauten piece, though. The lyrics save the whole thing for me to some extent. But since the sound quality of the live is not the best (or is it rather Blixa's a bit unclear pronunciation?) I listened to the studio version as well. Either way, I think that a lyrics translation would be helpful for people who don't understand German. - I found this, but I think it is a google machine translation. https://www.translateasy.com/de/song/einsturzende-neubauten-zivilisatorisches-missgeschick-deutsch-lyrics/663924" rel="nofollow - here

I'm compensating for the lack of concerts in the last two years, I'll probably reach 50 concerts this year.
Since we're proving our attendance, my first maskless concert was recorded for a music video and I appear somewhere in the audience. It felt insanely good to be able to rock out again
Probably my favourite album this year and the best concert of the Psych Rock festival I went to (for which I had my ticket since 2020). It was really cool to see traditional percussion and bagpipes after so many bands with just guitar/bass/drums
I wish I had made this track, a much better krautfolk attempt than mine.

A next one from me is another one that I'm going to see soon, 29 September: Anthony Joseph. A poet, writer, jazzman... and socially and politically very committed.

I think Joseph was my favourite of yours at the time. Enjoy and have fun! -It's great to hear about this jazz festival in Perpignan. I find smaller festivals often more exciting because you can discover new interesting artists and the atmosphere is more relaxed. During my summer holidays in Southern France I used to attend Jazz à Juan and the Nice Jazz Festival but nowadays you see only old familiar names in their line-ups. I wonder who is in charge of programming there. Despite this, I always wanted to attend Jazz à Marciac, at least once. I hope it happens one day, it's not that close from Nice, though. I've got one more. There's a sports complex a couple of miles from where I live that boasts one of the largest collections of synthetic all weather turf in the nation with 12 full size fields for sporting tournaments from youth to college. It's operated by my county's Park and Recreation department. This year they added hosting live music concerts, accommodating up to 7,000. All acts so far have not spurred my interest but upcoming next month is southern rock jam band Gov't Mule. I realize this style probably doesn't have much interest here, but if my work isn't heavy then, I will be checking it out as I have been a fan for quite some time and have never seen them live.
Their latest album from November 2021 is their first "all blues" album in their 25+ years of existence with a mix of covers and originals.
This is a cover of a Tom Waits song.

You're right, it's not on that album. I thought it is, because they played it in Bologna using their signature plastic thingy, and also the time before when I saw them touring that album. It's not on the albums surrounding Plastic Anniversary either, or on any other that I have (that's six out of maybe 15-20 they did). I think we should call it "Unknown Title".

I'll also answer yes to all the questions except having time for commenting. The time frame is OK but as I always say I wouldn't complain about having more time. Now to the music... that's more difficult! Very nice theme for me personally!

I went with these:
Samuele Bersani - Lu ruciu de lu mare
Matmos - Unknown Title
Anthony Joseph - Swing Praxis
Aquaserge - Un grand sommeil noir
I didn't choose Anna von Hausswolff's track because I actually experienced it live. She played in a 17th century chapel and the music sounded bigger than life, reverberating through the aisle, contrasting nicely with the intimate low purple lights.
Like Greg, I generally don't have much to comment (other than nerdy production stuff) but I love reading other people's thoughts.
Speaking of Aquaserge, I return often to this YT video. I love its warm vibe, it sounds much better than the studio version to my ears.

^ Hearing Anna von Hausswolff perform in such a setting would be glorious to me, and makes me once again wish I lived in Europe.
And that Aquaserge video is enchanting, Samuel.

^^ Sam, this is such a good track, as good and energetic as the entire album! Their latest work is stylistically quite different, it is inspired by 20th century avant-garde classical music. That's interesting but musically less appealing to me. Of course I do appreciate artists who try new things but what I like most about this band is their relaxed and playful way of experimenting, while the music remains enjoyable, without drifting into the trivial. That got a bit lost on their new album imo. But I do like the submitted track and I'm glad you like it. too.
It you have a moment, please do the little survey. That could help improve the polls and perhapts attract more people again. :)

I do this time to time for listening to polls, which is import the playlist onto an app on my phone for streaming on random play, which limits the ads from YouTube and play it as I work. I vary when it comes to music while I work but for the most part I tune out and it becomes background sounds. I often stream music recommendations through Amazon. Anyway. The point I am getting to is that when a track catches my ear in such conditions, I will break to explore further. So three from the poll that stood out were Matmos. Moura, and Anna von Hauswolff. So first three votes went to them. Though with Anna von Hauswolff, Dead Magic was one of my favorites from 2018, but I hadn't heard the live track before. Great performance. I loved that little rasp at the end. Matmos was impressive and I later streamed Plastic Anniversary and its on my (rather lengthy) to purchase list. Will have to pay attention for any performances that I can get to. Saw that they reside in Baltimore, which is about 3 hours for me. Then had to take some further listens for my fourth, which goes to Aquaserge.
As for the poll questions, I answered yes to all but my own time to comment. Limited right now by work and my son moving in for the time being.

^ Glad that live version of Anna von Hausswolff stood out for you here, and lovely write-up on your choices. Her Live at Montreux Jazz Festival album, which was released early this year is, I think, very good. Dead Magic was one of my favourites in 2018, and I like it even more now.
While I subscribe to Youtube Premium for one of my children (which as ad free), I must admit that I just use an adblocker (my eldest reprimanded me). I tend to listen to ones in the thread from individual posts and from the youtube playlist. I tend to put on the playlist in order a number of times on my android phone, put it in desktop mode so it can be in the background (usually am doing other things) and still play, and then return to the ones that stood out the most (my shortlist). I do find at different times depending upon various factors, different music might resonate the most with me. So what I think will get my vote after my first run through might not at another time as something else might click on next listen.

My votes go to Anthony Joseph, Primus, Moura, and Brandao Faber Hunger.
I didn't vote for Aquaserge as I know this track, but it's great.
Lorenzo's two nominations both lost out narrowly; The Dream Syndicate is another case where the singing is not quite to my liking and drags down an otherwise excellent track. The Samuele Bersani track is an event; I like it more than I expected, but it's not quite up with those voted. I love quite some material from Anna von Hausswolff and actually also saw her on her church organ tour, which was great, but this particular track doesn't attract me that much. I imagine the Gov's Mute track to work very well live, even though for listening at home it's not really my cup of tea.
I like Primus a lot, know a number of their older albums but not this one, and would be very happy to see them live. The Anthony Joseph track was the first I knew I'd vote for, very powerful. Same can be said about Moura; I listened to this and Dream Syndicate a few times to decide between them, very narrowly. Brandao Faber Hunger in Swiss German is a very special intimate tune that I just had to vote for.

These last weeks I didn't have much time and got to listen to the - very pleasant - nominations playlist only now. So, no commenting from me this time (but in my haste I said Yes to all poll questions), but straight to the votes...
My choices are for the dreamy Dream Syndicate, the extraordinary Anna von Hausswolff, the space-rocky Moura and the excellent chamber-y Aquaserge.
Regarding the time-span for these polls, I think the two-week schedule (with two weekends) is very suitable. Normally it should give enough time for everyone to suggest, nominate and listen, and if possible comment... Normally...

Another great edition comes to an end, and I’m spoilt for choice here, once again. After several listenings I have come to a decision after all. So, these are the acts that stood out for me:
MatmosExperimental, and in this case experimental electronic
music always attracts my attention. Besides conventional instruments and synths,
Matmos work with samples and integrate field recordings and diverse noises into
their music. In this particular piece influences of drum’n’bass and minimal techno
can be perceived which makes their music more accessible, esp. for a younger
audience which I find quite amazing!
Anthony JosephPoetry transported through music. I haven’t seen that
in this form and quality before. The music here is not just an accompaniment, it forms a
new whole together with this socio politically charged content. I wouldn’t miss
out on that experience if I ever get the chance!
Anna von HausswolffI had already heard of Anna von Hausswolff before, but
I was not familiar with her recent work. This combination of rock music with the sound of a church organ is definitely unusual and has a
powerful impact as a live recording. I can’t say that I am a big fan of this ethereal
darkwave type of music, but I do recognise Anna's exceptional talent. I will definitely take a closer look at her other recordings.
Moura The band combines various rock music styles with the traditional
sounds of their Galician homeland and creates a unique style of their own. I
know several rock andaluz bands but Moura definitely adds a new facet to the rich pallet of Spanish
folk rock, and this in top quality! You rarely get to hear rock bands from the Iberian Penninsula in my part of the world but maybe I will have the chance to see Moura in neighbouring France during the holidays.
Honorable mentions:
I enjoyed Gov't Mule's groovy blues rock very much, a genre that I haven't listened to for a while now. The same goes for the infectious stoner rock sounds of Miss Lava. It was also exciting to hear about the Taranta Festival in the Salento region in Southern Italy. I find all three acts great and I'm sure it is a unique experience to see them live, resp. to attend the festival.

Thank you all for taking the time to participate in this
little survey and for your additional comments. I do think that a few more days for
the polls would be reasonable. I’ll keep that in mind for next time. A short break between the polls would probably make them more enjoyable and also there would be more time for possible comments; maybe we would even get a few more participants. I was asked to do a poll at short notice and could therefore only start it after the weekend. I could just as well have waited a few more days. Then we would have had the two weekends.
Thank you for the music, the great videos and accompanying stories that brought back the atmosphere of live concerts to us!

Great! Finally a vote for Einstuerzende Neubauten! I was already wondering... not so bad this track/video in my view.
