Definitional wrangling aside, we all love debating the merits - or otherwise - of supergroups.
Not a scientific poll, so I am sure you will let me know if your favourite acronym is missing...

Certainly in the 70s they were considered one on the other side of the pond.  Anyway, I did write 'definitional wrangling aside...' Smile

I didn't want to get into definitional wrangling but the Santana/Steve Miller pedigree seems to qualify them - I recall in the 70s that prog fans were keen on them along with the likes of Kansas, Styx, etc.

Yes, their 3 pre-Steve Perry albums had definite progressive qualities

ELP

Formed in 1970 from 3 significant late sixties bands.

Keith Emerson - From The Nice came a virtuoso keyboard player well versed in classical and jazz styles as well as a 'rocking' Hammond player. Dubbed the 'Hendrix of the organ' due to his penchant for attacking the organ like it was his enemy. In ELP he found a band that could match his ambition to fully integrate symphonic, jazz and rock together as evidenced on the superb debut album.

Greg Lake - From King Crimson came this smooth English vocal talent. Brought up on lead guitar, he became a very technically proficient bass player in prog innovators King Crimson. Not only an excellent musician he was often seen in a white suit helping to woo the few ladies that ventured out to an ELP gig!

Carl Palmer - From Atomic Rooster and already well established as one of the finest young talents in the English drumming scene, Palmer could whip up one hell of a storm on stage. A fan of Buddy Rich , he once banged on his hero's hotel room during a tour demanding drumming tips. The two went on to become firm friends.

Transatlantic / ELP / Asia

Journey is probably my favorite band out of these, but that's more for the AOR than the prog.  Embarrassed

Just my own opinion: I think GTR is one of the worst purchases I've done in my life. Where the total is less than the sum of the parts.
It can only be ELP.

I well remember that video for 'When The Heart Rules The Mind' and then Max Bacon cropped up a year later on a TV talent show...

Of course ELP. It was the first, the best and very innovative at the time. Their works Emerson Lake & Palmer, Tarkus, Pictures At An Exhibition, Trilogy, Brain Salad Surgery and Welcome Back My Friends To The Show That Never Ends are all absolutelly prog classics.

I didn't want to get into definitional wrangling but the Santana/Steve Miller pedigree seems to qualify them - I recall in the 70s that prog fans were keen on them along with the likes of Kansas, Styx, etc.

ok Thumbs Up

I can vouch for this, having lived in the San Francisco bay area at the time. Myself, and many of my friends were developing musicians. Journey was kind of a local band for us, at least at first, and there was a great deal of excitement when they formed. Greg Rollie was the lead vocalist and keyboardist for Santana. Neil Schon also played with Santana. Ansley Dunbar had drummed for Jeff Beck and Frank Zappa giving him the best Prog cred of the entire band. Ross Valory did indeed play bass for Steve Miller. George Tickner was also an experience musician, having played with Frumious Bandersnatch and Faun. Their proginess changed drastically after Steve Perry was brought in to sell more records. 80's hit machine Journey is not Prog, but their first three albums are, and I highly recommend them, especially the first one.

BTW - I voted for the original Prog supergroup, ELP.

I don't know how to vote on this one. I believe the correct answer is ELP, but on the other hand I feel like going with Transatlantic because of The Whirlwind.

Flying Colours should probably be included in there someone as well even though it means yet another band with Neal Morse and Mike Portnoy in.

In my opinion the only prog band worthy of the supergroup moniker aside from ELP is the original line up of UK. Shame that band didn't continue longer. I also like the 3 piece version but they were very much aping the original and best trio (IMO).

ELP certainly transcend the category given their longevity compared to the others (matched only by, ahem, Journey).  Even their closest rivals in this poll, Transatlantic, are really a 'side project'.
