Subject: Interactive Poll : Let The Sun Shine In
Date Posted: October 23 2022 at 07:49
According to Dr. Sujata Udeshi, 98% of her patients present with
deficiencies of either vitamin D or vitamin B12, which she attributes to
lack of sunlight.
Well folks, it's that time of year again. The days are getting shorter and the precious sunlight that we all bask in during the summer is diminishing, staving us of all the goodness it provides. Warmth and nutrients. Specifically Vitamins D and B12. As you may also know, B3 is also a vitamin as well as a model of Hammond organ used by many musicians. You can see where I'm going with this.
This poll is for songs that either use organ as a main instrument or contain a solo or organ break.
In accordance with my own self imposed rules :
1 - Go lean - Post a maximum of two videos
2 - Rework the deliverables - Include name of band and song title above video as well as time range for the Organ solo or break if applicable (ie: 2:43 - 3:07)
3 - Continuous Improvement - No PA listings permitted. However, if an artists listed on PA has done a project that is NOT listed, it's fair game (such as guesting on other albums or other genres and such).

I love this song.
I listen to it at night, in the dark.
It seems that the voice come from an another universe, it got something of ghostly, sepulchral sound, and this effect is amplified by the accompaniment of the organ.
Masterpiece
1) Johnny Cash - Danny Boy
2) Charlatans!
Now I remember the name of the British band that made some good commercial pop albums in the 1990s featuring the sound of a Hammond organ, musician Rob Collins, who later died young.

Hehe, nice IA-poll theme. I first thought "can I find something outside of prog?" but then...
And why just one organ when you can get four? This, in my humble opinion, is one of the most fascinating organ pieces available (you probably know this piece, but well...).
Steve Reich - Four Organs:
Just saw them live ten days ago, and it was a great concert. This one is from their first album.
Tindersticks - Jism:
I hope this is "main instrument" enough, otherwise you can always get their tea stain... Tindersticks - Tea Stain:

A lot of classic rock came to mind . So here's one.
The Band - Chest Fever
And the something more recent. This band kept showing up on my Bandcamp music feed a a few years back. From their debut album.
Church of the Cosmic Skull - Evil in Your Eye

I gather that the church organ also counts!?
Here's Samsara II by Claus Bantzer. In fact when I was born, Bantzer was church organist where my father worked. I love the church organ since my childhood but it took me some time to appreciate how good Bantzer actually was/is. From my twenties, I would regularly join my father on Good Friday to go to the church where Bantzer played a Good Friday improvisation, and some of those were brutally good.
I love your topic introduction by the way!

My plan was have everyone choose their favourite only. But if there are very few people participating (meaning lots less songs to choose from) then I can allow two per.
BTW, you can keep posting songs until the end of the weekend. Then I'll say PICK YOUR FAVOURITE(S) and those will go in the poll.
Sound simple enough?

^ The early Disney films were accompanied i.a. by theatre organs. These organs such as the Mighty Wurlitzer had their heyday during the silent film era. In fact that's what they were made for. They were able to replace an entire orchestra. Silent films are still a source of inspiration for musicians today. Only few original recordings are preserved because this music is still being played live. So if you ever get the chance to attend such a screening of a silent film, off to the movies!

Here's my 2nd contribution btw.
Medeski Martin & Wood: Broken Mirror
Album: Radiolarians III (2009). Also featuring on the Fly in a Bottle DVD, portraying the band.
MMW, formed in NYC in 1991, are a group that effortlessly straddles the gap between avant-garde improvisation and accessible groove-based jazz (John Medeski kb, Billy Martin dr, Chris Wood bs). Medeski is a genuine keyboard virtuoso. Apart from the acoustic piano he plays a myriad of different key instruments, including all kind of organs.- Besides individual projects of the band members the trio has also collaborated with numerous other musicians incl. John Scofield with whom they have recorded several albums [organ solo starts @ 2:08]

@JD, I really like your topicand the concept is easily understandable. Maybe the poll title was a bit confusing; it doesn't suggest what the poll is about. But in general, I think that we need to do a bit of promo e.g. by posting the poll titles and links in the team thread. Yesterday someone opened a thread about keybordists in the General Music Discussions section. I posted there some info about our IA-poll including the link. I don't know if we'll get any feedback but I think it's worth trying.

Some thoughts and nonsense...
Lorenzo: Yes, indeed a very good Johnny Cash song. I don't hear it often, but it regularly pops up in my head (since I know someone with that name). Didn't know the Charlatans! track, rather straight forward but a good listen.
suitkees: What, four organs? But why don't they play together a good song then? And I don't like the lyrics. And what matches with Tindersticks? Is it a dirty song he sings with his mouth full? And stains have to be cleaned.
JD: Little Feat bring us a nice uptempo rock 'n roll song, and rolling it does. But the organ solo does not really impress me. Nice track though; it would make me dance if I'd liked dancing... But I must say I am more attracted to the Alan Parker track, with it's nice blues-rocky (and rolling) mood. Nice to see the virtuosity of Ethel Smith (must be bad film though, at the looks of this snippet). Alan Parker takes this one away for me.
George: Ah, Chest Fever by The Band is classic indeed. I love this track, and the organ is really cementing this one (if that means something...). Church of the Cosmic Skull sound very very retro, but also very very good. If not very original (making me think of some other famous bands) it is an instant good listen. Moody and... classic! And with the clip, they're not fearing ridicule... (and they shouldn't). Nice to see the Simpsons' take on the Iron Butterfly song.
Christian: Claus Bantzer could have been in Nick's Samsara poll from some time back. A very captivating and original organ-voice piece of music. I like this very much. Barbara Dennerlein definitely has her place here. She impresses with her playing but musically/emotionally I'm much less impressed - a bit clichéd big band jazz... I prefer the originality of Bantzer.
Mila: Cory Henry: No, not even with this one you can get me to dance... Very funky track. Back in the heydays of funk I was not at all into it, but nowadays I do appreciate it much more. And Cory Henry's playing on this one is indeed very good. Great track! But Medeski Martin & Wood take this away for me; a nice groovy dreamy cinematic track. Sorry Cory.

@Mila: Nice to bring forward the famous Wurlitzer theatre organ. It makes me think of the (also famous) Tuschinski theater in Amsterdam. In the 90s I attended to some silent film screenings there, accompanied on the Wurlitzer organ that was there since the opening of the theatre in 1921. The theatre was renovated in the late 90s/early 2000s and they took the opportunity to restore the Wurlitzer organ (which took quite some time...). It was reinstated in 2011 and it is one of the few Wurlitzer theatre organs still in function outside of the USA.
The most impressive screening I attended to was probably Carl Theodor Dreyer's La passion de Jeanne d'Arc. The Wurlitzer made that film an even bigger masterpiece!
For your pleasure, here is Superman's theme on Tuschinski's Wurlitzer organ:

I researched this and it seems like this has something to do with phone app (what I used) and licensing agreements. I will have to try on my laptop next time I have it open.
One of the differences between Premium and Free is the ability to play all your music without Shuffle. As a Free user, most of the playlists you see can only be played in Shuffle mode. This does not apply for Spotify on desktop.
Spotify provides Free users with some Pick and Play Playlists which can be played on-demand, without Shuffle:
These playlists can be found under Home > Made For You/Recommended For You. Pick and Play playlists will include some of the most popular curated playlists on Spotify, such RapCaviar, as well as personalized playlists like Daily Mix. You cannot choose which playlists are Pick and Play, but Spotify will include a few editorial playlists that align with your taste.

Great pleasure to listen to all the tracks again - a wonderful selection. I heard the Pristine and Franz Ferdinand tracks for the first time. The latter sounds to me a bit too standard indie pop-rock (I have one of their albums, but it never incited me to explore more of their work, curiously...). Pristine on the other hand sound really great. Yes, very retro blues rock, but wonderfully executed, with - indeed - a great Hammond sound, and what a captivating voice!
So, on my too long short list would appear Alan Parker's Heavy Water, The Band's Chest Fever, Claus Bantzer's Samsara II, Medeski, Martin & Wood's Broken Mirror and Pristine's Damned If I Do. Only because I cannot vote for Steve Reich and Tindersticks... Still three too many...
I'm tempted to go with The Band, despite the fact that it is well known, Claus Bantzer, also because most of you might not be able to listen to it, and Medeski and his friends. If I had three votes. Since I only have two, I'll go with the first two.

Since the electric organ was very popular in the
rock and blues music of the 60s and 70s, I expected to hear a lot of this musical
style. So, I was even more excited to see what else was to come. The most
outstanding pieces in this sense are obviously the contemporary art music
pieces by Claus Bantzer and Steve Reich.
Out of these two artists, Bantzer is more interesting for me since I have not yet had the opportunity to listen to
contemporary pipe/church organ music so far. On the other hand I'm quite familiar with so-called minimal
music of which Steve Reich is one of the most important exponents. Therefore,
my first vote will go to Claus Bantzer’s Samsara II, also because this piece is a pleasure to listen to, whereas Reich - at the peak of his minimalist creative period - impresses rather on a musicological, intellectual level.
Jazz, along with rock music, is one of the
genres where the electronic organ has also been used quite frequently, and in
a similar period of time. I am pleased to get to know the talented Barbara Dennerlein
who is the only jazz act (in the narrower sense) in the current line-up. So my second vote will go to
Barbara and her composition Just Play, performed together with Tino Wolf.
As mentioned before, there are quite a few rock
and blues acts in this edition and each one is great in its own way. Apart from
the big names it was the lesser-known artists that caught my interest, esp. Church
of the Cosmic Skull who succeed particularly well in bringing the retro vibe of
the 70s into the present day. If I had a third vote, it would go to this band.
I'm aware that I am breaking the fairness rule by voting for two entries by the same person. I apologise for this but musical diversity is important to me as well. However, the decisive factor was in the end that the focus of the track is on the organ which was the topic of this poll.
Btw. I came across this live rendition of Steve Reich’s Four Organs. I think it helps to understand what this piece is all
about.

I think I have heard the Reich piece before. This is great stuff of course, but I won't vote for it. Neither for Alan Parker, which I like a lot, but instead for the Charlatans and Medeski, Martin, and Wood. Some very enjoyable stuff here once more, thanks for the poll!

My votes went to:
Barbara Dennerlein & Thilo Wolf - Just Play (I'm always impressed by someone playing walking bass on organ)
Medeski Martin & Wood - Broken Mirror (Seriously cool song)
I would have voted for Claus Bantzer if a third vote was allowed.
Sam, It was great to have you aboard again! Would you like to host the next poll? I really enjoyed your Road Trip edition!

Thanks but I'm quite busy at the moment, and also when I hosted the polls I didn't participate afterwards. I much prefer to just listen and vote.

@Sam/Meltdowner
Ok, I see. But maybe you can suggest a poll topic or type of topic that inspires you?

^ Hey Doug, long time no see! I hope you're ok? Thank you for the music, great track!
Unfortunately this poll is now closed but the next one is round the corner. So keep an eye on the topic list in the general music discussions section. If you're having trouble posting video links, no problem, just post the artist name and song title and we will find the video for you.

I finally got on my laptop to listen to Claus Bantzer and my laptop app does allow for selected listening. But, same issue as with YouTube, the track cannot be played in the U.S. due to a permissions issue.
