The 2010 up oeuvre... So this is a much expanded (five times to be precise) edition of the poll that had five acts with five studio albums that were released between the start of 2010 and the beginning of November, 2022. Those acts were Dream Theater, The Flower Kings, Magenta, Swans and Anna von Hausswolffe. I asked people to consider all of the albums (based on their knowledge) that were released in that timeframe when voting. I also mentioned people bringing up names not in my little list of five acts with five albums from 2010 until now. I got a lot of mentions, particularly from Drew (BrufordFreek), and also from Will (Grumpyprogfan) (I expect each know much more modern Prog than I do -- I long ago got into French TV at least). Drew, who voted for Anna von Hausswolff in the past poll, mentioned liking the five by "The Amazing, Björn Riis, Caligula's Horse, Comedy of Errors, Corde Oblique, Dreadnaught, IOEarth, Jordsjø, Karda Estra, Leap Day, The Mercury Tree, Moulettes (Hannah Moule and the), The Psychedelic Ensemble, and Von Hertzen Brothers." Will voted for DT in that poll and mentioned "Thank You Scientist, Lonely Robot, Sanguine Hum, The Aristocrats, French TV, The Psychedelic Ensemble." My only contribution to this expansion is Cult of Luna, which brings it to 25. It would be appreciated if you could say something about your favourites (favourites in the list, favourite albums of the period....). There's a lot for me to learn about here, and I would like to hear about other that would fit this poll here. And feel free to vote even with significantly limited knowledge both of all the choices and even your one choice as long as that knowledge is based on 2010 and later music. I might do a four albums one later, I could more easily list many more of those from my preferences (especially if going more of a General Music Discussions route). ------------- Watching while most appreciating a sunset in the moment need not diminish all the glorious sunsets I have observed before. I don't know a lot of material from most of the poll options. I do know all of the relevant music from both Anna von Hausswolff and Swans, and like in the last poll it is between those two for me. I did end up giving Anna von H. a vote in the last poll (Dead Magic and The Miraculous being particular favourites, and Ceremony is up there too as well especially), and this time I will give it to Swans. To Be Kind (2014), The Glowing Man (2016) and The Seer (2012) are all excellent to my ears and I also really like leaving meaning. (2019). I haven't enjoyed My Father Will Guide Me Up a Rope to the Sky (2010) as much as those others, but I still like it. ------------- Watching while most appreciating a sunset in the moment need not diminish all the glorious sunsets I have observed before. I will vote for The Flower Kings again...but will add French TV and IO Earth to my favorites from this group included with DT and Magenta. Also a big fan of The Aristocrats. I just purchased their album with the Primuz Orchestra yesterday. I should also include Lonely Robot in that group. I didn't know that Thank You Scientist had 5 albums, but I love the three albums that I have from them. -------------

TYS combines different musical genres, yet their overall sound is unique. Brutal, soft, and catchy all at the same time. Great arrangements with space for the strings and brass to shine. Also, Tom Monda is one of the best guitar players you have never heard of. |

Oh, I was classifying those as studio albums in the way that PA does, as full-length albums, but even then how full is full? It's like how long is a piece of string? The EPs are studios, but sometimes albums refer to the LPs.... It's all a bit silly, especially with EPs being of varying lengths, albums being od widely disparate lengths, and of course being studios rather than "lives" or compilations generally played in studio. RateYourMusic, incidentally, includes seven released "albums" (their albums section excludes EPs) for Swans, but two of those are very limited edition 70 minute each fundraiser studio albums, like demos, which I also would exclude -- PA does not list those at all. Had I gone the non-PA route for studio albums, then I would have included the mighty Magma for Félicité Thösz, Rïah Sahïltaahk, Šlaǧ Tanƶ, Zëss : le jour du néant, and Kãrtëhl, as well as various others. Doesn't really matter, though, it's just another poll. The Psychedelic Ensemble. Most people don't know much about this brilliant composer and multi-instrumentalist. Having dabbled in Jazz/Rock fusion in his youth, he went on to earn a PhD in classical composition where he spent most of his career composing and teaching. Yearning to return to his roots, he began composing, playing, and recording prog compositions, solely on his own in his basement studio. His first two works, The Myth of Dying and The Art of Madness were, by all accounts, neo-prog compositions. But when he released The Dream of the Magic Jongleur, his classical background began to shine through. That album, and those that followed, like The Tale of the Golden King, and The Sunstone, are clearly symphonic prog at its best. Except from an occasional guest violinist, oboist, and vocalist, all other instruments were played and recorded by him. Sadly, his latest album, Mother's Rhymes, might be his last as he grapples with an incurable brain disorder that effects his nerves and manifests itself in uncontrollable body movements. What I"ve heard of The Aristocrats, Jordsjø and Karda Estra was quite good. Some others from the list that seem to be "popular" prog acts nowadays have nothing exceptional to my ears. The only one who sounds really exceptional to me is Anna Von Hausswolff, so she gets my vote. ------------- The razamataz is a pain in the bum |
