Both, I guess. I need to be in the mood to pop one of these on the turntable.

This is A Rum Tale of Good Captain Clack, A Salty Dog who sailed his ship, the Homburg, Beyond the Pale of Ireland, charting a Pilgrim's Progress across the vast Atlantic Ocean. The weather omens were good, and the captain always believed there's Something Magic about setting off on a long voyage when the sun Shines On Brightly upon white fluffy clouds glowing A Whiter Shade of Pale. He carried with him a Souvenir of London from the Grand Hotel to remind him of Home. He'd always had An Old English Dream to follow the route of the Conquistadors to the New World in search of gold, when often all they discovered was Fool's Gold, and Quite Rightly So. Before leaving, the captain said The Long Goodbye to his Simple Sister Mary and wished her Toujours L'amour. She kept the Home Fires burning while he was Bringing Home the Bacon away at sea. His loyal crew stocked the ship with a Kaleidoscope of Exotic Birds and Fruit baskets and All This and More besides for the long voyage ahead. The crew relieved Boredom by entertaining themselves with Whaling Stories and they all remembered the cautionary tale of The Wreck of the Hesperus, when a disastrous Power Failure led to the ship hitting rocks, and the Hesperus' crew were tossed helplessly Into the Flood and left Holding On to the ship's wreckage for dear life, when even those As Strong as Samson were About to Die.

I love both, but very different acts, i have bought all the first 7 Procol Harum albums, they are theyr own nieche of progressive, cabaret rock music that u could write endless about. But Saga is also a band that deserves not to be neglectet but to be held in very high esteme, they invented the modern unison instromentalime which Dream Theater have made a fortune of, Jim Gilmours and Ian Crictons guitar & keyboard/synth unison-instrumentalismes are so ahaed of the time , Saga i would say invented it .

Styx and Rolling Stonez may break my bones
Hmm, Styx vs. Swans Styx vs. Cardiacs Styx vs. Art Zoyd Styx vs. Can No, Styx vs. Magma Or Styx vs. The Residents
Actually, I would maybe do Styx's Equinox (1975) vs. Jean Michel Jarre's Equinoxe (1978) as a battle of two stylistically different albums in Prog Related from the mod to late 70s. and then I'd throw in 23 other options as I often like to fill up my poll options (some have more time on their hands than others).
As for Procol Harum vs. Saga, I know quite bit of music by both, and enjoy music by both, but it has to be Procol Harum for me. In particular, "In Held Twas in I" shines on very brightly indeed.
And how about Procol Harum vs. Focus as a Procol Harem Scarem battle....

I know Styx aren't the most popular band on this website but nonetheless I think they would wipe the floor with most if not all of those bands. Maybe Styx vs Uriah Heep would be a good one.

I am in the Saga camp on this one. I like Procol Harum. Just this morning I got around to reading Prog's tribute to Gary Brooker. (I'm a bit behind on my Prog reading. )

Procol Harum. And it's not even vaguely close. In fact, "vaguely close" is not even really that close.

Procol Harum......................and I have heard Saga's first 4 and have their first one....and while they are not a bad band they are no where close to being as interesting as Procol.

Great? No, but I'm glad you like Saga. They have their moments, but in no way are they on the same level as Procol Harum.

I did answer you. I said "they have their moments." But I am much like Rossini giving his review of Wagner: "Wagner has beautiful moments but awful quarters of an hour."

Saga, in spite of their late start, should be mentioned in the same breath as Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd, etc.
Procol Harum (really the Gary Brooker Band with a revolving-door line-up) had a few great moments over the years, but could never get out from under "A Whiter Shade of Pale".

Had some time to kill so I listened/sampled several Saga lps..... Silent Knight, Worlds Apart, Generation 13, and Trust. Trust was the best one to my ears... very proggy at times and some interesting tunes. I think they are more neo prog than crossover though they straddle both genres.. I hear Styx, Pendragon, Arena, IQ, even some Supertramp , Marillion , and Magenta. They aren't copying anyone but those influences seem present to me. I still like that older retro feel of Procol but I can see why people who like neoprog or melodic proggy hard rock would like these guys.

Thanks for the feedback. Sometimes I feel like people just automatically go with who they are the most familiar with (which is often the band they "grew up" with) without giving a fair listen to the other band. However, I don't feel it's fair to imply that Saga were influenced by Pendragon, IQ, Arena, Magenta or even Marillion when Saga came before any of those bands (and by at least three years in terms of when their first album came out). If anything those bands were influences on Saga and not the other way around.

Both equally.
Two very different bands though, apples and oranges. PH was mostly active in the 70's (their biggest and best output), while Saga is more 80s-90s, in my opinion.
I've enjoyed both bands, and can't put one above the other. Not worth trying to compare. Even putting my favorite PH (Grand Hotel) vs. favorite of Saga (either Silent Knight or Worlds Apart), still too different.
