^ I, on the other hand, love many 1984 albums. It depends what one is into. I don't remember ever hearing of Art Zoyd's Le mariage du ciel et de l'enfer as a 1984 album, I see it listed as 1985 across many sites including wikipedia's main page. That Timeline does not seem a reliable resource. Never-the-less, I voted for it. I adore Art Zoyd in the 80s, and this is tour de force album for me (one of AZ's masterpieces). After that would come Univers Zero's Uzed (but I prefer the earlier albums). I actually turned on a couple of people to RIO and UZ with music from that album, Présage specifically. I have thought of it as a pretty accessible UZ albums for many prog rocker. A Thinking Plague is another I like (my favourites are the following two) and I like that primitive Cardiacs album when in the mood (but I prefer those that followed). David Sylvian's Brilliant Trees and Dead can Dance's self-titled are a couple more I really like in PA. Out of PA, I love Cocteau Twins' Treasure. Paul, did you manage to listen to the albums you rate lowly in full? I'm not so adventurous and tend to listen to full albums that I think will interest me and are related to the music I am most into usually at any given time. have you had any surprises yet of bands that you didn't like with earlier albums but something clicked on hearing the later ones? (which might cause one to reevaluate the earlier material with a new context and mindset). ------------- Watching while most appreciating a sunset in the moment need not diminish all the glorious sunsets I have observed before. ^ You're right about Wikipedia's Timeline of Progressive Rock not being a reliable resource. For instance, Isidurs Bane's album in this poll is also listed as a 1982 album and Cristi's pointed out a couple of other errors too. In all honesty, I haven't listened in full to any of the albums I've rated 2 stars or less (apart from King Crimson), mainly because I'd much rather listen to music I enjoy. A couple of very pleasant surprises so far though are Isidurs Bane and Bacamarte which would probably be classed as Avant Symphonic Prog and which I'd never listened to before. I usually steer well clear of anything with an Avant Prog label, as you're probably aware.

I haven't listened to Isidur's Bane in many years but I recall it being a symph band more on the Neo-Prog side than avant-prog. I used to love Bacamarte, but hadn't thought of it as Avant Symphonic Prog. I'd put it as more folk symphonic prog. Labels, shmaybels, tower of babels.... My tastes are not as experimental as they once were, though I still like a certain out-thereness (experimentation and quirkiness) as an element and I do like the more art rock and art pop acts (often with a dose of psych). ------------- Watching while most appreciating a sunset in the moment need not diminish all the glorious sunsets I have observed before. Rush. Wikipedia does not classify fusion/jazz rock as prog? I agree. Yet, the 80's were full of stellar fusion releases.

Art Zoyd and Univers Zero stand out for me and today it's AZ. For what it's worth it says on the back it was recorded at Sunrise Studios Switzerland in October of 1984 and mastered in January of 1985. ^ Yeah. Maybe the wiki editor/compiler had used the recording date as reference rather than the release date. | Fugazi for me is an important album as it showed neo prog could stand on its own 2 feet. Too many 80's neo prog albums are beholden to Genesis. This one has a much more industrial post punk feel to my ears. Not going to be too everyone's taste but then that is what progressive rock is about N'est-ce pas? |
