I guess, not so few people would say that in the '80s, there was not much else proper Progressive Rock than Neo-Prog
- if to define Prog strictly and not include Prog Metal.
That's certainly not my opinion, as there WAS much else, as for instance these favourite albums of mine:

 Agnus  (ARG)  -  Pinturas Y Expresiones   (1980)

Asia Minor  (TRK/F)  -  Between Flash And Divine   (1980)

Bacamarte  (BRA)  -  Depois Do Fim   (1983)

Bi Kyo Ran  (J)  -  Bi Kyo Ran   (1982)

Djam Karet  (USA)  -  Reflections From The Firepool   (1989)

 Eskaton  (F)  -  4 Visions   (1979, 1981)

Halloween  (F)  -  Part One  (1988)

Iconoclasta  (Mex)   -  Reminiscencias   (1985)

Los Jaivas (Chile)  -  Alturas de Machu Pichu   (1981)

P.L.J. Band  (Gre)  -  Armageddon   (1982)

Solaris  (HUN)  -  Marsbeli Kronikak   (1984)

I'm not sure I can accommodate the dismissal of J-R Fusion, Avant/RIO, Zeuhl, and Prog Metal music and bands from people's consideration of that which is progressive rock music: it's all one and the same to me. Heck! Even a lot of the experimental pop, New Wave, and techno-pop in the 80s always felt "progressive" to me (and it was certainly still rock 'n' roll). Thus, I find it sad and narrow-minded to not include artists like Pat Metheny, Univers Zero, Swans, Shub-Niggurath, Klaus Schulze, Allan Holdsworth, Earthworks, David Sylvian, XTC, Ozric Tentacles, Queensr˙che, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Brian Eno, Jon Hassell, and even The Fixx in a discussion thread like this.

Hmm.. are there any non-Japanese late 80's (1987-1989) ELP style albums? I've already checked out the Japanese ones so that's why I'm being so specific. There's a couple of Early 80s ones but I have no idea if this type of music carried on later outside of Japan.

One could wonder how big a difference there was between the '70s and the '80s when talking about quantity. Well, according
to RYM, the '70s had 360-520 releases each year while this amounts to 170-360 for the '80s. Only about 10% of the '80s releases
was by Neo-Prog.

Paul, please respect the OP. Shocked
Why would you object to me giving the late great Geoff Mann & Twelfth Night a brief mention? Ouch

When talking about quality and characteristics, one can wonder how much of the '80s Progressive Rock can be comparable to
the classic one from the '70s. I think that can at least be said about Avant-Prog, RIO and Zeuhl, which, again according to RYM's
informations, amounted to about 20% of all the releases in the '80s. ( https://rateyourmusic.com/genre/avant-prog/ )
There was surely also quite a bit of other albums, for instance some of those on my list.

A lot of my 80's listening was electronic and new age stuff and out of it came this symphonic gem:
Stephen Caudel - Wine Dark Sea
Stephen actually re-recorded this album a few years ago where he created an 'orchestra' by using sampling techniques for every individual instrument. I would position this somewhere near Rob Reed's recent instrumental series of albums Sanctuary but I feel its more cohesive.

That along with Enya's Watermark and Clair Hamills Voices are favourites of mine. I also like what Mark Isham was doing a lot at the time. Could also mention Suzanne Cianni's album Neverland and also the very talented Patrick O'Hearn was doing some great stuff at the time. Nearly forgot Eddie Jobson's Theme Of Secrets. It was a stromng decade for instrumental music when you factor in Jean Michela Jarre, Vangelis and of course Tangerine Dream. Plenty of creativity going on which is all that matters.

Something else, I've been wondered about, is whether any of the '80s Prog can be called "classic" - for instance, I can't see any
difference between Halloween's Part One and the '70s Prog. Or is the term "classic" only proper to use about the '70s Prog?
- which I'm most into.

Classic and modern prog for me has always been divided by the before and after timeline of 1979/1980. That's how it was organised on my long-since-defunct  music site where there were just two prog genres, with prog artists from 1967 to 1979 being listed under "Classic Prog" and all prog artists who came into being from 1980 onwards being listed under the sweeping generalisation of "Neo Prog", where "Neo" just means "New" or "Modern". Smile

The only band I can think of that bucked the trend was Eloy but that's very much a personal opinion. I enjoy Colours through to Time To Turn more than Dawn through to Silent Cries and Mighty Echoes. That said they are all good. Most classic seventies prog bands either lost the plot in the 80's or redefined their style. Eloy only made very slight modifications although even then the long form tracks disappeared and they eventually gave into the eighties with the not so good album Performance.

I don't like either of those albums. The Three album is especially depressingly bad given the talent involved.

Emeson,Lake and Powell was a better try although the line up never gelled for me and I would have much preferred Simon Phillips on the drum stool in the absence of Palmer. Not to say that Cozy wasn't a great drummer but he was more in the hard rock school of drumming. Stargazer is amazing! Phillips would have brought more to the table imo.

Unfortunately, I'm unable to reminisce about Iconoclasta's Reminiscencias as I can't remember what it sounds like and I can barely remember how to spell it either. Tongue

Could it have something to do with the way you're listening to(o) many albums? Tongue

- which I'm most into.

Just my opinion but i find "classic" refers to the period where prog was most popular, most productive and most innovative. Great prog has been created ever since but never as a huge explosion of activity as in the years from 1969 - 1974. I surmise "classic" refers to an era as a whole and not the quality of music from individual artists that followed. Prog was new then so the WOW factor made it unlike anything else. Now nothing is really a surprise no matter how enjoyable.

Yes, that's exactly right, bearing in mind I listen to at least ten albums a day, I must have listened to at least two thousand albums since I last listened to Iconoclasta's Reminiscencias.

Maybe you could upgrade your brain to a positronic one like Data has? He can listen to 150 compositions at the same time (that would be 1500 albums a day!). But if you're concerned about analyzing the aesthetics of the music, Data recommends listening to 10 or less compositions simultaneously (which is no slouch at 100 albums a day).

I like what Cozy brought since Simon would've aped Carl's style a little too closely. Too bad they didn't do a second album together.

I like 2/3 of ABWH. "Themes," "Fist of Fire," "Brother of Mine," "Birthright" and "Let's Pretend" are great.

As for 3 (or Three), it's unforgivably subpar. If legacy prog stalwarts weren't involved, nobody would care about that album. It would get zero mentions!

It may be a lot easier for you to reminisce about Iconoclasta's self-titled 1983 debut, which is just as good. Big smile

Actually, if talking about numbers of releases each year, this is not correct according to RYM's informations. Their statistics
show that each year of the 21st century has so far had more releases than in the '70s, and a lot of years even twice as many.  ( https://rateyourmusic.com/genre/progressive-rock/ )

I'd say, classic Prog is not just the Prog from The Classic Era but also a specific kind of Prog, and the term "classic" can refer
to this specific, original kind of Prog, too. On that basis, we can for instance talk about Retro Prog as similar to the classic Prog.

Oof! ELO, GTR and PG didn't make prog albums that year. GTR's is pure sappy AOR, even with Hackett and Howe onboard.

Schulze's Dreams really isn't that memorable. 2.5 stars at best. Not a good period for him.

Pageant's debut La Mosaique de la Reverie is easily a 5-star recording and a contender for best album of '86!

I guess it won't suprise you, Paul, when I say that surely not all the albums you list would get the stamp from me as
"proper Progressive Rock", even they're approved by Wikipedia. Wink

No, me neither. I certainly wouldn't classify ELO, Peter Gabriel or Talk Talk as Progressive Rock, but I have no objection to them being listed in ProgArchives under Crossover Prog. Smile

I better correct this to that they're approved to be on Wikipedia's Timeline, as they not necessarily are considered to be Prog in Wikipedia's articles about the artists - whatever the reasons are for all this, as it's rather strange and not good for Wikipedia's reputation.

often overlooked in his canon , he had relocated back to Greece (from the UK) and this was him trying out his new studio. Has a different feel to a lot of his albums (as exepcted) and not a bad track. Those 5 stars I heartily concur with Clap

There was NO decline throughout the decade, just a change in tastes and styles.

While symphonic prog and classic 70s styles were diminishing, other styles of prog were either thriving (such as neo-prog, zeuhl and avant-prog) or just being born (progressive metal and various ethnic hybrids from nations playing catch up).

And we certainly can't leave out the unique mix of prog and punk most developed by the Cardiacs.

For those stuck in the 70s paradigm it was indeed a decline but for those who could embrace completely new ways of approaching progressive music, the 80s were the second wave.

Here's the so-called decline of the 80s ending in 1989.

Was it prog's finest moment as far as popularity or volume?

Of course not but prog was hardly the dead dog it's made out to be.

These artists were responsible for the massive prog revival in the 90s and beyond.

often overlooked in his canon , he had relocated back to Greece (from the UK) and this was him trying out his new studio. Has a different feel to a lot of his albums (as exepcted) and not a bad track. Those 5 stars I heartily concur with Clap

Direct is one of his best albums, IMO! I've loved it since '88! Clap

Apart from the notable exception of Dream Theater I don't see that at all from those lists. Echolyn and Spock's Beard from USA and Anglagard, Par Lindh Project, Anekdoten and The Flower Kings from Sweden had a lot to do with it and they don't relate to those bands particularly. The nearest thing to a movement was when Par Lindh formed the 'Swedish Art Rock Society' with friends in 91 ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P%C3%A4r_Lindh#endnote_PLP" rel="nofollow - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P%C3%A4r_Lindh#endnote_PLP ) with the intention to revive the traditional symphonic rock style.
Unlike the seventies when a few notable bands made prog what it was (ie ''The Big Six'' plus a few other important influential bands) , the 90's was a more general move back to bands that could write their own songs and perform live as opposed to the over produced tripe that littered the 80's. I would even give Guns N Roses a certain amount of credit for the prog revival because they were 'real' not some manufactured corporate rock entity. Partly also the nostalgia for the classic old bands had seen many of them return and were touring regularly. There were a lot of dynamics in play.
Of course we have the ever popular 'what is prog anyway?' argument. If you are trying to pull a strand through from the seventies then its hard to hear that in many art rock bands who just want to be themselves. Do they set goals or just make the best music they can. It's just about attitude at the end of the day but also taking power back which is so important. The likes of Steven Wilson and Marillion have very much learnt to do that and so they can be what they need to be. Perhaps they learnt that from others or they are just bloody minded and determined enough to do it.

During most of the 1980s, I lived, worked and performed in Tulsa, Oklahoma USA, which is normally not known for its love of anything progressive!

However, I did see a number of amazing prog concerts, including;
  • The Moody Blues (with Patrick Moraz)
  • Pat Metheny
  • Al Dimeola
  • Adrian Belew (with a 3 piece band)
  • Michael Hedges
  • Chick Corea's Elektric Band with blazing guitarist Frank Gambale and amazing John Patitucci on bass!
  • Todd Rundgren's Acapella project
Groups that came through that I missed include Bob Fripp & his Crafty Guitarists (I saw them in Chicago) and others.

Tulsa was quite a happening place for music back then!  As a gigging bassist, I was constantly involved in various projects with performance artists, bands and solo acts.

Non-prog concerts I enjoyed seeing included Alice Cooper, Aerosmith and Cheap Trick!  It was a fun place back then, but I think it has changed & not for the better.

It depends of course on which definition of Progressive Rock is used. If RYM's, their statistics say, 360 releases in 1980 vs 220 releases in 1989.

Mmmhhh!!!!... It's more a question of propositions or offers from bands/artistes than a change of taste of the crowds.

Yeah, RIO & Zeuhl (70's styles/genre) lasted roughly until 85 before also crumbling/sinking (in terms of number of releases) into the second half of that decade.

AFAIK (not an expert), neo-prog thrived until Fish left Marillion (87?) and until Brave (93?), they were nearly a spent force; and IQ wasn't doing any better during those years, either ... and it's not poppy-prog It Bites that will change things.
The years 86 to 91 are truly dreadful (not just for prog, FTM), and not just IMHO.Geek

Progmetal was just metal music back then. The 80's PM into PA is mostly rewriting history and/or PA revisionism.

I know there is a "conspiracy" TongueLOL on PA to rehabilitate the 80's as a normal (good) decade, by seeing the amount of 80's polls series in the last two years of the forum, but the 80's still sucked because of its second half. Of course, the weak start (81 to 85) didn't help either.

There was plenty of good music around in the late-1980's. We just didn't know where to find it without the Internet. Smile

For instance, out of that 1989 albums list above, the only three albums I knew of before joining ProgArchives were by Kate Bush, Tears for Fears & Vangelis. Embarrassed

Yes, and if you add Neo Prog and Synth-Pop/New Wave to the equation too, it more than doubles the amount of good music there was around in the eighties. Thumbs Up

But when talking about Prog Metal in the late-'80s, I finally today, after a year and many listenings, got almost into Voivod's
Nothingface, which I'm not so little happy about, as I've had my doubts but have been much up to being able to do it. Tongue

The Police were actually close to becoming a prog band in my eyes when they stopped (perhaps thats the reason!). Andy Summers (ex Soft Machine) and Stewart Copeland (ex Curved Air) had already touched on the genre outside of this band. Shame they didn't continue although Sting did a crossover jazz fusion album Bring On The Night which is quite fun. IMO!

I'm still on a Bob Fripp tear!

The album by the Roche sisters featured Bob Fripp and Tony Levin.  Fripp's guitar work on this song is sublime.

I find this music rarely acknowledged in prog land.  Sorry, 1979, oh well!

Tears For Fears were 'Art rock' but then so was Kate Bush. Both were equally important and both were a massive respite from so much dismal over produced 80's shyte from artists with zero talent.
If we dismiss Seeds Of Love as not being worthy of the tag 'prog' then we can equally dismiss The Sensual World IMO.
The idea of 'crossover prog' is just a massive deceit imo. Basically a bunch of artists that we randomly like or don't like that didn't make commercial driven music.

The main point here concerning Tears for Fears is that they are not included in PA, and thus are not considered to be Prog by PA.
So if to respect my OP, the band should not be listed, neither if to respect the PA rules for Progressive Music Lounges. Personally,
I consider The Seeds of Love to be Pop-Rock, and so do Paul, I think.
