Based on the Now That's What I Call Music series and inspired by GrumpyProgFan, here's your chance to put together your ideal prog compilation album for a particular year - starting with 1967 - not necessarily picking your favourite songs, but choosing 20 popular songs by 20 different artists that are most likely to appeal to a wider audience as well as songs that best represent that year in prog, and hopefully, it'll be a million-seller. Don't worry if you can't come up with the full 20 songs to make up a compilation though. You could always put your album out on a budget label instead, where it'll no doubt end up in a charity shop bargain bin.  Now That's What I Call Prog 1967 01. Hi And all of these were heard, loud and clear, on the FM dial in Madison at the time, with the idiots in the AM station making fun of the drunks, the stoneys and the clothing, not to mention the dope -- which (hypocritically) the station also used to pick up girls with! We can call it "prog" now, but in the end, it was the history of music telling a bad signal (MONO in the AM band) that was being replaced by a good signal (STEREO in the FM band) ... which made the music sound better and cleaner ... all of a sudden, you are hearing the opening of 2001 at home ... instead of the movie theater ... for a nice example, although none of these will EVER replace the Cinerama Dome! It was an interesting time, that came crashing down later with students getting shot and falling in a few places and the UW was completely covered by the ROTS and the NG (I worked at the Rathskeller at the time!) and they were having a riot frisking all the women! It was sick to say the least! But the music never died, and I remember you fondly Neil! We were right ... but many of those haters are still in control of the country! ^ It was tricky for me too, as most of the 20 songs I chose are not strictly prog either. I was beginning to wonder if I should have started from 1968 instead.

I just chose what I had as part of another list for that year. All of these albums that these tracks are off are at least on the Prog related spectrum to me. Alphabetically listed. Hi, The only thing that needs to be said, is that fans/folks today do not realize how huge so many of these became because of the new FM signal (STEREO!!!!!) ... remember that none of them were played on regular AM radio (MONO!!!!!), which made a huge difference for the "new music" ... That's not to say that the things on AM radio were not good, there were a few, but the real headline was the new music that FM radio showcased ... and pretty much none of it was played on AM radio at all which was about the numbers ... like some around here! Then, in 1967 and 1968, all of this music was NEW and there were no numbers whatsoever ... and it should tell you something about the art and the music ... that didn't need numbers to get heard! The next "scene" for music, won't need the numbers either ... and hopefully it will bring a new day, a new sound and a new person to enjoy the music, instead of being stuck on the thing that has hurt the music most in the past 30/40 years.

This is a really cool idea! Honestly, the hard part isn't picking out the songs but putting them in an order that would make sense as a properly paced track list if this were an actual compilation  1. Scott Walker - Mathilde 2. Good choice! I wish I'd included Buffalo Springfield in my list too. Broken Arrow has more changes of tempo and time signature than your average prog classic. |

Having looked through all of the excellent listings, I think yours is the best Now That's What I Call Prog compilation album of all, which is surely destined to be a million-seller, whereas my album will no doubt end up being sold for a knock-down price at a car boot sale.

Hi, All of these were "hits" in the AM radio ... with one really bad issue ... the Doors' song that was played was a cut up version of the original ... which the Madison main FM station (the UW's at first!!!) made sure everyone knew about the long song, which got folks to dump the single and go get the album. I think someone joked that this was the day a number one song on the AM radio ended up 999th on the next day! JA's piece was huge ... though many folks really thought the lyrics were a bit off base ... many wondered if it was pro or against the drugs ... and even cynical at that! ------------- Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about!
