Last night while listening to return to ommadawn it dawned on (see what you did to me Paul? Tongue) me to do this poll.

Anyway, two later ones by Mike here. I'm not sure I really see (hear) the appeal of Amarok. It sounds a bit herky jerky to me. RtO sounds much more like classic Oldfield but I need to hear more of both.

I was planning to return to this poll at dawn, but I may as well vote now while I'm here. Smile

I copped out with 'both equally'. I like both a lot but neither is at the level of his first 4 although they take something from that era more than any other albums he made post 1978.

Not a big fan of Amarok and I haven't heard Return to Ommadawn yet

I stand with Roger Waters, I stand with Joan Baez, I stand with Victor Jara, I stand with Woody Guthrie. Music is revolution

I think Return is a beautiful disk and have voted for it, purely because out of the two, I would prefer to hear it more often. I respect Amarok a great deal and think its brilliant, but it's one of those disks where I really have to be in the mood...

Return to Ommadawn, but I like Amarok almost the same.

Ommadawn. I like its angular wave numbers and fruity Schrödinger cheeses.

Return to Ommadawn is very nice, although I prefer the original first four albums. Amarok is too disjointed for me.

Amarok is the greatest album Oldfield has ever done. It's so perfectly and utterly bizarre and brilliant that I love every nanosecond of it.

Return to Ommadawn was a decent return to form that I'm glad to have in my collection. But at the end of the day, it's just another Oldfield album.

I voted for I only know Amarok, and I never really became a Mike Oldfield fan despite enjoying Oldfield music. Maybe I would be if I put some effort into it but I'm plowing different fields now (there's a Sally Oldfield reference related by way of Sally Field). Some old fields are best left fallow.

I have never listened to either so can't say or vote. A shocking omission really.. i just feel satisfied with Oldfield's 70s and very early 80's releases that i must say ive never bothered to explore further.. but i will set myself to listen to these and report back.

If you like the original Ommadawn then I definitely recommend checking out the sequel.

I believe I remember reading that at the time he made Amarok, Oldfield considered it as if he was making a sort of sequel to Ommadawn. Apparently decades later we did get the real sequel to Ommadawn. As it is, I do prefer Return to Ommadawn, I really loved how well he achieved to come back to his sound of the 70's I love so much, it could have been recorded just after Incantations. Still, the original Ommadawn remains king.

It’s interesting how opinions differ! *Amarok* can feel disjointed or chaotic with its experimental structure, which might be why it doesn't resonate with everyone. Return to Ommadawn, on the other hand, definitely has that classic Oldfield vibe, more melodic and cohesive. Listening more should help clarify your preference. When I was in college and working a part-time job, I struggled to manage both responsibilities because I had many academic writing projects that I didn't know how to complete. I shared my problem with my sister, and she suggested lastminutewriting, an e-platform with genuine users who were already benefiting from their services. I decided to try https://lastminutewriting.com/" rel="nofollow - https://lastminutewriting.com/ lastminutewriting writing service for help, and it was an excellent experience. It has truly been a lifesaver for me, as Last Minute Writing provides high-quality content without requiring much time. With their help, I’m now able to balance my college studies and my job easily.
