because DT is trying too much to sound like other bands, they sound like a copy of U2 on song no.4 and 2, Muse on no. 6, Pink floyd & Genesis on no. 8, Metallica on no. 1

DT forgot their own uniqueness and they are trying too hard to imitate their idols.

also, they want to sound "metal" (with no success) and for that reason their last albums are lousy and boring

Song number 2 like U2? You are forgetting that U2 is one of
DT's biggest influences, if you don't listen carefully, listen to
Lifting Shadows of a Dream and you'll know what I'm talking
about.

Metallica on No.1? I thought that sounded like Velvet
Revolver? Don't forget the Kansas vibe on the last song
too

Posted By: DeadGhost
Date Posted: October 24 2005 at 09:21

yeah, somebody told me about "lifting shadows..."

I like that song, actually, and the influence from U2 is not so obvious and very light. On that song DT still sound like themselves and not someone else

As I stated elsewhere it sounds too "plastic" to me...melodies aren't bad, however...in particular War inside my head

You are saying Dream Theater failed what they set out to do. "Octavarium" was made to kick the "Train of Thought" metal-idea, or so I read, and I believe they have. "Octavarium" sounds somewhat like "Falling Into Infinity" to me, but with more "Images & Words" now than ever displayed previously in any other album. It just so happens "Images..." is my favorite Dream Theater album, so obviously I'm satisfied, especially with the Pink Floyd 'interpretation' and influence on track eight. Even though there may be obvious riffs that have been copied and improved on (Track six is obvious I know), the album remains solid - much like "Images & Words." I'd choose this over pure metal anyday ("Train of Thought" for example).

Your "(with no success)" reference to sound "metal" is meaningless, Dream Theater is metal and obviously sucessful. Lets just look at album sales and ticket sales. Dream Theater must have 1500-2000 ratings by now on ProgArchives and is on top of the "100" list for genre, you tell me what success for a "prog" band is.

No Dream Theater is not my favorite band. This is all just the way I hear it.

Yes, it's difficult to pick just one, anyway...

When Dream And Day Unite- haven't heard it Damn! it`s hard to get, I will try to order it

Images and Words-Wait For Sleep. Just beautiful, don't you think?

Awake-Innocence Faded. I was once told this song was one of their most complete arrangements, for the tempo, the solos and LaBrie's vocals...I agree

Falling Into Infinity-Hell's Kitchen. From the instrumental tracks I have heard, this is my favorite

Metropolis 2-Home. A hard choice, this one is my favourite DT album

Six degrees-haven't heard it just waiting for the right moment to buy

Train Of Thought-haven't heard it I just know In the name of God, and it blew me off, but it would not be fair for the rest of the songs if I voted for this one

Octavarium- Octavarium. Maybe because I also love Pink Floyd. The song is amazing!! Please dear fellows give this album a try! I think this one is a flatter album, with a bit of every style DT has, somehow like Images and Words. Don't be mad at them! Probably Train Of THought overshadowed Octavarium, I don't know, can't say a word yet, but come on!!

For me, instead, when I saw DT in Turin during Metropolis II tour, I was a little bit disappointed. Metropolis II is a masterpiece, but sometimes LaBrie voice failed. And they (only) played: Metropolis II and a 20min medley of "past songs". That's all... you know... it was a feeling like coitus interruptus.
