Subject: Our 1970 top 10s in & out of PA (share & comment

I tried 2010 before, partially to test the waters, and I have been happy with various people not just listing their faves, but commenting on others choices and the general conversation. No lists are required to participate..
Please consider posting ten of your favourite albums from 1970 if you can and look at and try to comment on other people choices that you know or interest you.
Similar things have been done by me and others but I wanted to make ones where it can include included Prog and Non-Prog, in PA and not in PA AND where part of it is to try to look through and comment on each other's choices when possible (particularly if we know and like something). I'm hoping this might give me a better idea of what some people like through the years that may be in and out of PA, Prog or not, and maybe help some people to connect over music that they like.
I like topics where we share our interests as well as displaying an interest in what others mention as their interests. I like that kind of interaction, and I do like it when it's mostly positive, or at least negativity is minimal, and especially when it's enthusiastic. I like conversational topics. I'm not so keen on topics where the OP does not respond much or where people just list and mention what they like without interacting and commenting on what others say.
I did a yearly lists topic for our top 20 or less you like from each year: https://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=134499" rel="nofollow - CLICK . And Mirakaze did a whole series covering years, but that was specifically for Prog. And there have been many other such topics. But those lacked much commentary on other people's choices.
This can be for ten or less (or somewhat more). Ideally, I would appreciate some of the labels that rateyourmusic gives for the albums, a category at PA if applicable, or your own descriptions. That might help to better get a feel for your interests. If it's really well-known, no need. This time all of my top 10 are in PA and all are, save perhaps Linda Perhacs, well-known at this site, so I would not think it would be as useful, but I tried anyway.
So where I really hope this can be different from other list topics is that we try to not only present our lists, but that we look at each others lists and try to comment on what we know or are interested in from those lists. Please try to focus on the positive; negativity and criticism can be such a downer. And I know that some prefer to vote for an comment on other people's choices rather than try to make their own lists, they should be comfortable just commenting on whatever they see and like. I would rather do these kind of topics than polls, but my issue has been the lack of interactivity amongst list makers, and the lack of comments on other people's choices.
1970 is a big year for many releases for many of us, but maybe not as overwhelming as say 1972 and 1973 for numbers of releases. I still have over 50 faves listed at Awesome Prog for 1970, and actually, 1970 has many awesome-to-me releases. I expect 1970 to draw more forum members in than 2010, but we will see. I would like to try at least one of these for every decade, and I guess, following Mellotron Storm's lead, the Os might be fair ones to start with. And no one need list ten or any, one might just comment on things you see that you like from people's posts.
I have been dissatisfied with making polls, and others have expressed their dissatisfaction. Of course making lots of topics, period, can be off-putting. Often I make topics if I can't sleep or the forum is slow (trying to give it a boost). I don't judge a person based on the music they like -- well actually I do to different extents, but I don't think less of someone usually for their tastes, although that does depend on the tastes/interests of course. Some people are into some pretty deplorable things. Of course sharing interests can bring me closer to people. That common ground can make it easier to talk to people and connect with them. And I might grow to like music that does not do it for me now (I try to keen an open mind about many things, and some things in life I would hope to always despise).
I would rather judge character such as thoughtfulness. Anyway, I hoped that this approach may bring more diverse community together talking about and exploring each others interests in a friendly and interested environment.
No need to comment on others choices if you don't appreciate them, but please strive to comment on the ones you do.

While I stuggled (and failed) to come up with 10 PA-related favorites for 2010, this will be another kind of struggle. This time I will only include PA-relevant albums, to make things a little simpler. An I still had to cheat:
Jan Garbarek Quartet - Afric Pepperbird (Avant-Garde Jazz/Jazz Fusion) Magma - ST/Kobaïa (Zeuhl/Jazz Rock) Soft Machine - Third (Canterbury Scene, Jazz-Rock) Jethro Tull - Benefit (Folk Rock, Progressive Rock) Miles Davis - Bitches Brew (Jazz Fusion, Avant-Garde Jazz) Van der Graaf Generator - H to He Who Am the Only One (Progressive Rock) King Crimson - Lizard (Progressive Rock) Pentangle - Cruel Sister (Progressive Folk) Linda Perhacs - Parallelograms (Psychedelic Folk) Amon Düül II - Yeti (Krautrock)
Bubbling under:
Can - Soundtracks (Krautrock, Soundtrack) Bo Hansson - Sagan om Ringen (Progressive Rock) Pearls Before Swine - The Use of Ashes (Psychedelic Folk) Genesis - Trespass (Progressive Rock) Nucleus - Elastic Rock (Jazz/Rock-Fusion) Catherine Ribeiro + Alpes - N°2 (Avant-Folk, Psychedelic Folk) Supersister - Present From Nancy (Progressive Rock, Canterbury Scene) Gentle Giant - Gentle Giant (Progressive Rock) Association - Earwax (Jazz Fusion, Free Jazz) Continuum - Continuum ( Chamber Jazz, Progressive Folk)

Looking at the list that are already there, I have no originality to offer, all is already listed, and it's pretty much all prog. Here's 12 (can't decide which two to kick out):
Van Der Graaf Generator - The Least We Can Do Is Wave To Each Other Amon Düül II - Yeti Miles Davis – Bitches Brew Emerson, Lake & Palmer – Emerson, Lake & Palmer King Crimson – Lizard Magma - Kobaïa Van der Graaf Generator - H to He Who Am the Only One The Soft Machine - Third Linda Perhacs – Parallelograms Pink Floyd - Atom Heart Mother Can - Soundtracks Tangerine Dream – Electronic Meditation
Oh actually... Nico - Desertshore is very good, and not yet listed as far as I can see.
I wonder whether we ever had a "H to He" vs. "The Least We Can Do" poll - there are obviously different preferences between these two.

^ I love Nico's Desertshore as well, I have it at 11 in my Awesome Prog lists (the rankings are often quite arbitrary, except that I really like having Magma in first place). And that Can is another particular fave of mine, although I have it in my 1969 list. That TD was actually the first Tangerine Dream I fell for (the ratings for it are much lower often than how I feel about it). The first TD I heard, which was in 1986 (remember because it, and various other albums, was given to when I was in hospital for a burst appendix, along with Echo and the Bunnymen, Kraftwerk and The Divinyls), was Phaedra. I did not like it then much, but I love it now.
I love most albums listed by people. David has mentioned one that I have never heard or that I can even recall the name of, which is Breakout. There was a video game of that name I was keen on. Looking up the album 70a, I do seem to recognise the cover. Listening now and enjoying it. What a great year 1970 is. Thanks all.

^^ Bitches Brew is a fine album, seminal and of great import, and is on my longer list and could be in my top 20, but it's not one of my very top favourite Miles Davis albums. I prefer the earlier In a Silent Way (that's what got me into Miles Davis despite already knowing Bitches Brew, and the later Big Fun and get Up With It, and various earlier works including Sketches of Spain. And I really like various Miles Davis lives. Great artist
^ Thank, Jared. I love most of your top twenty. It's way easier for me to comment on what I don't know from lists than do. I don't think I've ever heard that beggar's Opera, barely listened to BJH, and definitely don't know that Moodies album.
Here's what I have at Awesome Prog as my 11 to 20.
11. Nico - Desertshore 12. King Crimson - In the Wake Of Poseidon 13. Exuma - Exuma 14. Gentle Giant - Gentle Giant 15. Demon Fuzz - Afreaka! 16. Herbie Mann - Stone Flute 17. David Bowie - The Man Who Sold the World 18. Igor Wakhevitch - Logos 19. Tim Buckley - Lorca 20. Donald Byrd - Electric Byrd (which I have read called Byrd jumping on the Bitches Brew bandwagon, although flying on might be more apt)

Beggar's Opera: Their first 3 albums are among early 70's UK prog's best kept secrets... hugely enjoyable stuff.
BJH: Their debut and by their own standards, sub-par tbh. I think they'd be too MOR for you personally, but I've loved them since a teen.
Moody Blues: I'm shocked, horrified and appalled quite frankly. Call your self an Admin?

I've wondered before if two Davids from Copenhagen come into contact, will the Davids be annihilated much like matter and anti-matter? It's only if both are vikings as the vikings had a talent for getting annihilated on mead and mead before wrecking the town.
Incidentally, I'm Scandinavian enough to complain when I go to Ikea here in Vancouver that the staff can't speak Swedish. Tacks for nothing.
I like all of the Guldbamsen David from Demamrk's list, but not in my top 20, Funkadelic's is the one I;d most like to play right now. And I very much like Parliament's Osmium form that year.

I have not listened to Layla in ages, I have loved that album and song. Gentle Giant is one of my faves, and a great debut to me. And that ELP debut is my favourite album by ELP.
Not saying it would be your thing, but in 1970 Magma released one of the greatest and most exciting debuts for me. And I think kicking off with such an out-there double-album is audacious. To me Magma never bettered it. For me 1970 is a great year, and for two big names in Prog circles, it's a terrific year for King Crimson and Van der Graaf Generator to me. It was a great year for jazz-rock or fusion with Miles Davis and Soft Machine's Third, a great year for funk with the the P-Funk releases etc. And great year for heavy metal with Black Sabbath. It's an exciting year for me for many releases of different progressive persuasions.
That said, I did in part choose this year as I recall, say, 1972 and 1973 as generally considered to be bigger in Prog circles and I thought this year might be interesting not to see some of the most usual suspects from people with the most "mainstream" Prog album interests.

That said, I did in part choose this year as I recall, say, 1972 and 1973 as generally considered to be bigger in Prog circles and I thought this year might be interesting not to see some of the most usual suspects from people with the most "mainstream" Prog album interests.
Yeah I see that.1970 is certainly an important year but as a prog fan 1972/73/74 hits the sweet spot! I don't know about Magma, often its said that https://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=3315" rel="nofollow - this one is the one to start with. I'll have go with your suggestion though
