Well which epic track is your favourite? I love all of them, but while all can be favoured, can all of them be your favourite? I also will go "Echoes", although I would have gone with "Atom Heart Mother" at another time, and "Shine on You Crazy Diamond" at another earlier time. ------------- Watching while most appreciating a sunset in the moment need not diminish all the glorious sunsets I have observed before. I find such negativity, and "trash" talk, from a topic starter disheartening. Disliking it is fine. If AHM is pretty garbage in your opinion, then one might infer that in your opinion (of course it's your opinion) the people who voted for it and mentioned liking it in your topic have pretty much a taste for garbage. I thought it was horrible when Waters and/or Gilmour would make such claims and I thought it very disrespectful of Ron Geesin, who I think, did a fantastic job with the material (and I love Aldiss involvement). It's one of the first things I heard from Pink Floyd and have loved it since I was a child, and as someone long into choral type vocals, "Breast Milky" is beautiful. Hi, AHM deserves more love. It is magnificent, and if you don't believe me, go listen to the classical version done by Ron Geesin on the net. It is unreally good, and makes great sense of classical music, instead of some quasi-hip stuff done by some folks that ended up trashing the whole piece, unfairly so ... they got too rich to admit they were kids at one time, and did some far out things. ------------- Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Maybe my 'garbage' comment was a bit harsh, but I do really struggle with the track AHM, and have never really taken to it, always finding it a bit of an endurance test to get through. ^A bit harsh yes:). But I can easily understand how it's not for everyone. I wouldn't play it for most of the people I know (and love) in real life, because I know I would only make them uncomfortable. At best. There are slices of conscientiously put together works of music I might feel like stating something similar about, but I try not to. Most of the time. I also think everyone should write exactly they feel like saying. Because why should I care if someone thinks AHM is trash? It doesn't change anything. The music is the same. But I obviously do care. Otherwise I wouln't have bothered writing this. That's my problem really, not yours:) |

^^ No worries. I expect there's lots of atmospheric/long-form music that I love that you would find very challenging to endure. I was a bit disappointed because when I post in people's topics I'm often hoping for positive and enthusiastic conversation. I'm prone to negativity. Nothing wrong in liking what you like, but I do think we should be careful when assigning terms of quality based on tastes, even if it is just one's opinion (the "best" opinions being well-informed and well-considered -- thoughtful). ^ I think communication commonly works best when we try to consider what we're saying and how it might be received. Rather than being impulsive often in saying the first thing that comes to mind, often it is better to think through how we phrase things, for instance. ------------- Watching while most appreciating a sunset in the moment need not diminish all the glorious sunsets I have observed before. | All of them. Echoes is the best thing on meddle. Shine on shouldn't have been broken up over two sides (too confusing) and they probably only did it that way because nothing like that had been done before. Atom Heart might be their first full blown prog epic unless you count ASFOS title track. |

^ I've definitely gotten crankier as I get older. I sometimes act more positive than I am because of it, and expect the same of others sometimes. I realise that I need to be more genuine (otherwise that leads to internal conflict and confusion). My crankiness led me to shouting obscenities at a bicyclist the other day (mind you, he was rude first, and I stand by calling him an a-hole). I was a babe when you got into Floyd (some would say that I still am, or maybe only I would), but I have been listening to Floyd since the late 70s. It was my fave band for years. I like all of its albums up to and including The Wall, but after that I lack much interest. I expect that your lack of appreciation for that which has a lot of Geesin involvement probably says a lot about your general tastes, but also maybe you evaluated it as a long time Floyd fan and had the wrong kind of expectations. I tend to think of it as a Geesin work with PF's involvement. I don't consider myself to be a generalist prog or rock fan either, and lots of music that Is really lauded at PA does little for me. For instance, to me Close to the Edge is a three star album. I'd generally rather listen to Magma than Yes, to Art Zoyd than Genesis, to Radiohead than to ELP and to Swans and Godspeed You! Black Emperor than to Marillion and IQ... And there's so much I like outside of progressive rock and any kind of rock. ------------- Watching while most appreciating a sunset in the moment need not diminish all the glorious sunsets I have observed before. ^ Interesting, Prog-wise and otherwise, I commonly favour music which is fresher to my ears. The stuff I was into when young I generally don't much return to regularly... I love to regularly discover new-to-me-music especially from the 60s up. I go through phases, and one discovery leads to more discoveries. The last few years of discoveries and getting to know some acts better have been really important to me. For some the nostalgia factor is much more important than it is to me. In my high school years I listened to lots of classic rock, including Prog, but aloo I was exposed to lots of weird and wonderful stuff thanks to university radio (plenty of post-punk, and avant-rock/pop). And I liked Kraftwerk, Echo and the Bunnymen... And in my first set of uni years (in the 90s), by the way, I was listening to lots of electronic music -- a lot of Kitaro, as well as soundtracks, and lots of Kate Bush... And lots of classical music. Then quite a bit of jazz. And lots of Pink Floyd, Alan Parsons Project and Gary Numan then. And then I went to Japan to work and got into various quirky stuff, including Bjork. My first love really was classical music, but I don't listen to it much now because it can make me feel overly emotional. And I got very into soundtrack music from a young age... Hi, I wonder if you would say the same thing if you saw the Ron Geesin's classical version you can find on the net. It is excellent. I do think, that it was more of an attempt at giving the piece of music, a sort of life, instead of it being an idea for us to imagine, with some lyrics to guide us along! Instead you get a sort of pastoral piece, which is handled well, and all of a sudden when compared to the original by PF, THAT ONE sounds pretentious and probably not as good. When RW and DG started trashing AHM, was the same moment that I stopped purchasing anything by them, or bother getting into it, and I knew that they had becomes selfish and true turkeys (no need to say that bad/worst word) and I was never going to spend another nickel on them or PF. And the only thing I've listened to since, has been Nick's thing. I like the art of it all ... not the self-righteous BS that some folks would rather look at a part of their lives ... they would not be where they are without it ... and you can't change the life script, so spending time shaming it is the same as looking at the mirror and swearing at yourself ... you're accomplishing a heck of a lot, I'm sure. ^ A good deal more to me than experimental. Haunting, mysterious, melancholy, and at times beautiful. Ummagumma and AHM are finally revealing themselves to me, the last albums in the canon to do so. Unlike most of you guys, I find Animals to be kind of a grating bore now. Loved it as an angry teenager, but it's nothing I wish to hear anymore.
