i'm pretty new to a lot of progressive rock, i just decided to say screw it one day and downloaded a whole bunch of random songs from groups i've never heard of.  downloaded a few songs off of in absentia and really liked it, along with some paatos songs, i told my friends about it and they suggested bands like aghora and spastic ink, but i dont really know why, but i like the slower stuff like porcupine tree and paatos a lot more, if anybody knows any bands like those it would be nice.

Not really into PT, but since they're archived under the psychedelic rock genre in here, maybe lending ears to Pink Floyd will be a great place to take off from.

I'm fond of art rock as well, an in that same vein of Paatos,I'd suggest long listening sessions to Gjallarhorn and Kerrs Pink for starters, then I think you can make it on your own!

Enjoy and welcome to the Archives!

I love Porcupine Tree... but if you want something a little easier to find for downloading... cause I've never even heard of the groups Land just mentioned... try some Radiohead or Archives...maybe Mostly Autumn...

Paatos' Kallocain is a really cool CD.

Pokemon Treat is a very overrated group.

I'm not familiar with all of PT's work, although I recently reviewed "Lightbulb Sun". If you like that album, then "Marbles" by Marillion is probably right up your street. Try some of Marillion's earlier stuff too - "Brave" is a good album, and "Script..." is one of the finest prog albums of all time, IMO - but it's a completely different style.

Hawkwind are also worth checking out - but be careful, as they've released about a million albums. "Warrior On The Edge Of Time", "Hall Of the Mountain Grill" and "Doremi Fasol Latido" (the "Lemmy albums") are awesome (if somewhat dated) "Space Ritual" is the album to have for those times when you want to chill with a little psychedelia (roll another fat one!), "Levitation" has a more modern production - it doesn't sound like it was created in 1980 at all, and has the bonus of Tim Blake on keyboards, and "Sonic Attack" is great if you like the heavier side.

I often hear the Flower Kings, Spock's Beard and Opeth mentioned in the same breath as Porcupine Tree - although there are many dissimilarities between the bands. However, of course, in prog, different is goooooooooood!!!

Enjoy!

Try http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_BAND.asp?band_id=385 - Pineapple Thief I wrote two reviews, very Porcupine Tree...

Or try http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_BAND.asp?band_id=423 - O.S.I. , Steven Wilson guests here and the general sound is very PT-like.

Another album you should check out is http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_CD.asp?cd_id=5794 - Opeth - Damnation , Steven Wilson produced the album and played Keyboards...

Hi pi, Welcome along!Big smile

Porcupine Tree's music has changed quite a bit over the years. "Lightbulb sun" and "Stupid dream" are similar to "In absentia", but as you go back further, the become more ambient and trippy. Don't get me wrong, their early albums are very good, but different to IA. "Recordings", a collection of rareties is also worth finding.

Steve Wilson, the main man of the band has been involved in many side projects, and tends to leave his mark on them. OSI, a side project related to Dream Theater is one which is worthy of mention. No Man are pretty food to, as long as you avoid the remix stuff.

As Diddy says, Pineapple Thief are similar too, and very good.  I would also mentione a lesser know band called Archive, Marillion.Com by Marillion (which Wilson worked on), Ozric Tentacles (for the older PT style) and Parallel or 90 Degrees.

If pi is exactly 3,and 0 remains zero, what other constants are there so we could derive an equation formulating your excistense.

by the way it would take me a lifetime to write down the precies value of pi, and still I would not have finished.
