Having checked the Hawkwind discography on here and been utterly confused, I'm wondering which Hawkwind albums buried among this pile of live albums and compillations are, in fact, studio albums.  If anyone has got any clue, I would greatly appreciate knowing.

Hi Useful

Hawkwinds back catalogue is very confusing. They have released over 120 albums over the years. Many of those recorded after about 1978 were a mixture of studio and live. I cant tell you all the studio albums, but the ones I can reccomend which are purely studio are:

Warrior on the edge of time (Very good)

Quark Strangeness and charm (Good)

Astounding sounds, Amazing music (Excellent)

PXR5 (Very Good and mostly studio)

Levitation (Excellent - their best I reckon)

Chroncle of the Black sword (Excellent concept album based on MIke Moorcocks Elric books - Not popular but I think its great )

I think the very early albums are also studio recordings, Like Doremi Fasol Latido, perhaps someone else can verify this, and add to my list???

The Hawks were often erratic and choosing albums can be tricky, especially as many of their best ones (listed above) are deleted, although can be bought on auction sites. The official Hwkwind website is no help at all. They have apparently disowned their past, which is a shame.

I can also reccomend, although not studio albums - Live Chronicles, Live '79 and Hall of the Mountain Grill (mostly studio..)

Hope this helps - Good luck!

Yeah, I've got Hall of the Mountain Grill and I've also heard Warrior on the Edge of Time and the self-titled debut (along with Space Ritual).  Thanks for your help though.

Some of the earlier ones worth getting are:

  • In search of space
  • Doremi fasol latido
  • Hall of the mountain grill
  • Hawkwind

All are remastered studio albums, with excellent digipak covers. Others I'd recommend from a bit later on are:

  • Electric tepee
  • The xenon codex
  • Palace springs (female vocals!)

I like the older stuff like 'Hall of the Mountain Grill' and 'Warrior on the Edge of Time' very much, as well as the classic live album 'Space Ritual'.

I don't know much of the 80s stuff, the only one I have is 'The Xenon Codex' and that one sounds pretty cool.

From the 90s, I have 'Electric Tepee' and 'Alien 4', the last one being highly recommended ('Alien 4' might as well be my fav Hawkwind album overall).

Levitation and Sonic Attack are great albums period (and studio albums). Highly recommended if you like the heavier side of Hawkwind - and for Tim Blake's superb spacey synths on the former.

Otherwise, Doremi.. is excellent, as are Warrior... and Hall...In Search of Space is an intresting curio, although I wouldn't recommend it to anyone but a fan. Roadhawks, although a compilation, contains Silver Machine. All these albums (and Space Ritual) feature one Ian (Lemmy) Kilmister on bass. Spot him a mile off

I got a copy of Spacebrock recently -  a very recent Hawkwind album, and it took me by surprise, as it's pretty much on form - definitely worth checking out. I'm not very keen on Chronicles..., but I know a lot of Hawkwind fans that are - so don't take my word on that one
