I`ve listened to a fair bit of Camel and although I think they are very good I fail to see what the big deal is about them on this site ... so I ask you the question are CAMEL overrated ?

Is it really important whether some band is overrated or underrated?
If I like (or dislike) something I don't care about ratings.

Just to annoy everybody, I'm going to write an actual thoughtful analysis here. Wrong place, wrooong time.
I think that the biggest thing about Camel is that they are a very professional, musical band. Yes was always cosmic in intent, Pink Floyd philosophical, Genesis mystical/humorous, King Crimson experimental, but Camel was interested in forming perfect, beautiful, melodic, and engaging music. This makes them one of the most approachable and laudable prog bands out there. However, it also means it often breaks down to whether you like this hook or that atmosphere. If "Lady Fantasy" fails to captivate you, that has more to do with you than with Camel.

Let's see. Camel - Snow Goose #8
Rush - Moving Pictures #10
Ahh, yeah Camel is way overrated. Ridiculously so.

Their first four albums are true rock (not just prog) masterpieces. Even if they never had recorded anything after this their artistic value would be the same.

Camel are not overrated!, they are unique and can't be compared with none of the other prog bands.
I own seven albums of Camel (all from Mirage to I Can See Your House From Here)...though they gradually came down to more popish fields, the explanation is that they hava given to us such a wonderful prog material during that declinying period (1975-1977)!!
Snow Goose and Moonmadness are enough reason for a five star rating!

I've always found "Lady Fantasy" to be over-blown and
riddled with clichés, and Camel itself very boring and
unoriginal, but for someone who likes it, that shouldn't matter.
For 25 years I've been listening to Peter Hammill, and I've
never met one other person who really likes him, people
always found it depressing and grating, but that didn't affect my
enjoyment of his music. It's cool to see on this site that so many
other people appreciate him too.

In the movie Clueless, there is a girl who asks a question to her best friend: why are people always overwhelmed or underwhelmed, but never just "whelmed"?
My question is: why are bands overrated or underrated, and never just "rated", like in a good review?

Not a chance- Camel are one of the greats, in my opinion, and have genuine emotion and feeling in their music, which some take (oddly imo) to be a weakness and call them 'second division'...This annoys me, as their albums are beautifully crafted and performed.

The threads such as "some band is overrated" Or "some band vs. some band" are boring and leads us to nowhere. It doesn't make any sense to start topics like that.

No, why is that while Genesis, Tull, Yes, Pink Floyd were more famous, Camel happened to be in the long run just as influential on the Neo-progressive scene as Genesis.
They had a magical run of great albums, but my all time favorite will always be The Snow Goose

The Album reviews and ratings for Camel area great source of info. I
can't say I like all of Camel's music but I would not say overrated.
They made great inovations.

Don't be ridiculous.
They are underrated if anything; not everyone gives them their rightful place as the best band of all time.
Now let's stop these bloody silly overrated/underrated threads.

I think they're a very good band, but nowhere near geniuses. They can't touch stuff like "Close to the Edge," and, as I think one reviewer put it, "The Snow Goose" is lovely, and it is in fact so lovely that you could show it to your grandmother or great-grandmother and she would think it's lovely too. There's no real danger behind it, nothing shocking or particularly new. It's a good band with very competent musicians, and Andy Latimer's prioritization of melody above noodling fingers is what makes that band and makes it sound fresh, but I wouldn't classify them as being one of the best prog bands ever. Not even close.

Camel as influential as Genesis? Let's get serious. I've never
heard a single innovation in the music of Camel (and we gave
them a big chance back in the day, up until Raindance, there
one had to draw the line, and they never delivered), they
always seemed to be comfortably riding in the wake of the
other band's innovations. That said, threads of this nature are
much overrated.

I wish Andy Latimer had joined up with Pink Floyd when Roger Waters left. That would have been my ideal band. Floyd has the power and the glory, Latimer (i.e. Camel) has the melody that later Floyd lacked, and I reckon he would have fitted in perfectly.
Just my 2 minims' worth...

I would also say Camel are to prog what Love are to psychedelia--mixing the best of every influence in a great melting pot and coming out with a lovely, musically perfect concoction.
If you haven't heard Forever Changes, do so.
