The title is sarcastic. I just wanted to ask people about this...

Phil Collin's did a song with LIL KIM called "In the air tonight?" Please tell
me this was a Collin's song previous to this and he didn't write a song
with lil kim. Plus look at the words...

'[Phil Collins]
I can feel it coming in the air tonight
Oh Lord
And I've been waiting for this moment
For all my life
Oh Lord, Oh Lord

[Lil' Kim]
Keep still in the sh*t, killin the rhyme
The Queen stay poppin the wine and cockin the nine
For those who think they stoppin my dough
Wanna copy my show, wha
I'm switchin my flow, can't take it no mo'
Oh you think I'm playin around
I'm layin ya down
Album drop, new millenium shuttin it down
Better off givin it up, I'm rippin it up
Spendin money, livin it up, not givin a f**k

Hiding the tote, runnin the coast
Makin niggas catch the Holy Ghost
I'm realer than most, wha
The trendsetter, the Brooklyn repper
You know the routine
Smoke you like a ciggarette-r
We've been, out in a bit
Y'all still talkin sh*t
Ain't that a bitch?
What part of the game was this?

[Lil' Kim singing]
Millions I'm holdin'
Drop tops rollin'
Diamonds on my neck
And Bentley ballin'
Me and my niggas gettin' high all day
Straight to the top, cuz we on our way

[Lil' Kim rapping]
Comin' for y'all, comin' for y'all
That's right I got something for y'all
Something for y'all, wha
God bless me, look at all I've been through
It's my time, I can feel it, can't you?

Chorus:

[Phil Collins]
I can feel it coming in the air tonight
Oh Lord
And I've been waiting for this moment
For all my life
Oh Lord

Can you feel it coming in the air tonight?
Oh Lord, Oh Lord

[DJ Clark Kent]
JM, JM
Lil' Kim, Lil' Kim
PC, PC
Clark

[Phil Collins]
Well I remember..

[Lil' Kim]
...back when it used to be the eighties
Said the world was gon' end in 2000 (that's crazy)
I'm the only thing to fear
For the new year
New year, and if BIG was here (woo)
Get the fans, we the ones to talk
We die real on the streets
So watch where you walk
And you can find me, usually
Talkin' dirty to a cat thugged out
Or even kinda nerdy
Lil' Kim, Lil' Cease and JM
Taking over like a plague on a town
All y'all can do is pray and watch it go down
Like when the ball drop
My fam's all I got, we keep it gangsta

Comin' for y'all, comin' for y'all
That's right I got something for y'all
Something for y'all, wha
God bless me, look at all I've been through
It's my time, I can feel it, can't you?

[Phil Collins]

Well, if you told me, you were drowning
I would not a lend a hand
I've seen your face before my friend
But I don't know if you know who I am
Well I was there and I saw what you did
Saw it with my own two eyes
So you can wipe off that grin
I know where you've been
It's all been a pack of lies

[Phil Collins]
I can feel it coming in the air tonight
Oh Lord
And I've been waiting for this moment
For all my life
Oh Lord, Oh Lord

I can feel it coming in the air tonight
Oh Lord
And I've been waiting for this moment
All my life
Oh Lord, Oh Lord"

It's a disgrace that he would even let her use it for those words.

Yes, it is a Phil Collins song, previous to the collaboration with Lil Kim.  It's called "In The Air Tonight".  At least, the first part.

Argh, I didn't think anyone could make this song worse than it already is!  I'm not a huge fan of Phil's solo career.

That's why I don't like hip-hop/rap on the whole...

I know the song in question, but in my head I keep getting Chris de Burgh's Lady In Red..., why is that?

I think it's because of this:

I've never seen you looking so lovely as you did tonight...

Nothing in common except the word tonight...

Strange.

This Lil' Kim sample song/rap sounds worse than that Puff Daddy/Pee Diddy-dum-diddy-do sample of that Led Zeppelin track he did with Jimmy Page.

Hasn't Phil Collins also collaborated with Bone Thugs in Harmony?

I love Phil:

a) he drummed on all the best Genesis albums

b) he sang on Trick of the Tail, Wind and Wuthering, Seconds Out and And Then There Were Three...

c) he's a driving force behind the possible reunion of the Genesis classic line up, and gracious enough to pass the mic back to Peter

So you can forgive him for his solo career and the film Buster then?  Fair play to you.

He does do a lot work for charity and he does also play piano to a reasonable standard, so he's not all bad, it's just I don't like his awful pop ballads.

I'm not denying his drumming ability and his work with Genesis and that other prog band he was in (Project X? Planet X?).

Brand X is the name you're looking for.

I actually was glad when he took over the reigns after Gabriel left. Of course, no one knew then what was going to happen to the music of Genesis...

Don't be mad at phil.  In the Air Tonight (the original version) is a great song.  too bad lil kim has to come along and ruin it.

and let's not forget that Brand X is amazing.  probably #2 in my list of fusion bands (after Mahavishnu).

Thanks for clearing that up Hibou!

I do have to say that Phil Collins can actually sing, I find his voice similar to Gabriel's on some of the stuff I've heard.  I've yet to investigate Genesis yet, I will one day..., I'm not a usual progster, I start with VdGG and work my way back!

Yeah, I'm not too big (in fact, not big at all) on radio hits or Phil Collins solo
career so I have never heard the song. As long as I cleared up that Phil
Collins didn't collaborate with lil kim to write this song. But why would he
give her the rights to destroy one of his songs?

WHY IN THE WORLD????

Why must hip-hop "artists" always think they've got the right to spoil beautiful songs with their unbearable stuff???

In the air tonight is a great song...

Phil Collins, along with many artists dont look at their music like their fans might. They see their songs as products, the rights to which can be purchased by other artists or producers. On the one hand Phil Collins will tell you what a personal song - inspired by his marriage breakdown - 'In the air tonight' is. Then he'll allow it to be b*stardised and homogenised like that.

I'm sure you'll find that most pop/rock stars have very little integrity when it comes down to making money. Look at that w*nker Macartney flogging the rights to the Beatles catalogue to his idot friend Jacko. Then years later flapping about whose name should come first on the credits to some songs, his or Lennons. Arseholes, the lot of them..

It's a good job they have the talent to entertain us, they'd have nothing going for them otherwise..

I certainly agree about the artists not looking at music the way their fans do ... whcih is why we see songs used on ads (had a thread about that just a few days ago) ... and also a bunch of collaboratorations that have most of us cringing ... Elton John and Blue, Queen and Five, Jimmy Page and Puff Daddy, Sting and Craig David, Santana and Michelle Branch ... the list is endless ...

I heard a different story about the Beatles catalougue though, Blacksword ... Apparently the pair became friends and recorded a couple of tracks together (Say Say Say and The Girl Is Mine) and then Jacko was so inspired that he oubid Macca when the Beatles catalogue came up for auction .. Macca was furious and they haven't spoken since ...  that's the story I heard at least ...

Because they lack creativity mostly. There are some good rappers out there, not my style at 43 but still recognisable as good. The problem is most of them are record company brands and just dish out ' shock' material. It is what sells these days unfortunately. Floyd gave wyclif jean ' Wish You Were Here'. I mean really, personally I find that almost blasphemous but hey you won't and can't stop the gravy train

Collins's debut album, Face Value was a classic, and he did cover versions of a certain John Lennon so go figure!!!

You could be right. But I think the critical point here, was why was the catalogue up for auction in the first place? I'm sure Macartney could have vetoed any decision by the record company to put it up for sale. Surely an artist has that right?? Maybe not..

A good example of how certian songs can end up with unfortunate asscociations is 'Everybody Hurts' by REM. Michael Stipe said it now belonged to the people, and is used as the soundtrack to every human tragedy that unfolds in the world. He now says it's not an REM song, but an advert for misery and despair, and he hates it.

Check out Guardian article below ... apparently not McCartney's decision ... he didn't own Beatles songs ... no wonder artists can get so cynical ...

Jackson angers ex-Beatles

Fellow artist who bought publishing rights 'cheapened' songs by using them in adverts

Angella Johnson
Monday November 6, 1995
http://www.guardian.co.uk/ - The Guardian

The three surviving members of the Beatles attack fellow singer Michael Jackson in a magazine article published today for 'cheapening' their work by allowing it to be used in advertising.

Jackson, who bought the publishing rights to the Beatles ' music for £50m in 1985, allows songs to be used in TV commercials for products including Nike trainers. He is thought to have received about $250,000 (about £166,000) for one advert.

They are, not surprisingly, a little miffed and a row has been brewing for some time. George Harrison warned: 'Unless we do something about it, every Beatles song is going to end up advertising bras and pork pies.'

He was backed by Paul McCartney, who said Jackson - with whom he recorded two singles in the 1980s, Say Say and The Girl Is Mine - had 'cheapened' the songs released.

The bitter comments are made in the latest edition of Elle magazine, just ahead of the release of the Beatles Anthology album this month, which will feature the first new tracks for a quarter of a century.

McCartney was outbid by Jackson for the rights and is said to still be furious at his refusal either to sell them back or, more gallingly, to increase his royalties, despite stories that Yoko Ono has re-negotiated the share due to her late husband, John Lennon.

It is perhaps an even more painful pill to swallow because, as he reveals in a book, McCartney: Yesterday And Today, by Ray Coleman, that it was he who advised Jackson, at a lunch party given by singer and actor Adam Faith, to get into publishing.

The 4,000-song ATV catalogue includes over 159 Lennon-McCartney Northern Songs gems and almost 100 other Beatles compositions. The group own neither their greatest compositions nor their most treasured recordings.

Despite the row, Jackson sees himself as a custodian of the great recordings of the 1960s, and recently blocked a rap album of Beatles' songs.

If only I had a penny for every time Phil contradicted himself. Now that I'm on this subject (again):

Phil once stated he became a fan, and friend, of Bill Bruford by going to early Yes concerts. IN ANOTHER interview, Phil said he never really liked Yes.

As far as I know that's TRUE, Phil used to attend to Yes gigs around 1970 and got to know Bill Bruford and Chris Squire. Collins even was considered to fill in the drums department as Bill was planning to leave the band and study at the university, in the end Phil never got to rehearse with the band and Bill stayed.

Phil Collins reminds me of a flim flam man .. he puts on the mask for whatever style or trend is selling at the time and masquerades around, I`m surprised I`m one of the few that see this. Your guys views are respected, but I still think some of them are pathetic!

Never ever forgets Phil's contribution to Genesis ( whichever frigging period) and...his contribution to pop...for better or worse, Gabriel's departure also unearthed an unpolished diamond at the time.

Oh, I agree with that. He did such inspired performances with the band, particularly during the '76 - '77 tours that I actually find it hard to believe his claim of not liking their music. How can anyone put SO much into something they don't like??? I could never do that.

But then again, that's Phil Collins 1 speaking. Maybe when his other personality kicks-in again (Phil Collins 2), we'll be hearing just how much he loved the music.

Inconsistency #427 by Phil:

I was just recently reading a really long, extensive interview with Phil. I think it was from 1981. Phil kept trying to drive home just how much he revered Soul music and R&B such as Earth Wind and Fire, how it was his driving force in music, and how he'd rather listen to that than he would Yes (whose music, all of a sudden, he claimed he never liked). He claimed that Tony and Mike purged all of his Soul-inspired contributions from the final Abacab cuts.

BUT: Phil had his own toy band in the 70s, his pet project to where he basically played anything he pleased. Didn't have to worry about the evil Tony Banks or the stuffy Mike Rutherford drowning out his pleas for earnest Soul. The band was called BRAND X.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Brand X would hardly be mistaken for The Temptations.

Great drummer.

Talented musician.

He was in this band GENESIS.

The singer was this guy named Peter.

Then Peter quit the band and I think Phil the drummer was killed in a
terrible boating accident 'cause all the stuff that said "Genesis" on the
front cover had this miserable squeaking troll, WITH DREADFUL LYRIC on
it... and the drumming pretty much went to sh*t.

No worries.... The records that followed made great frisbees and oversize
drink coasters. I even melted one into a candy dish.

Still have it.

It's full of tiny, but deadly, grenades.
