What do you think is the best ending of a prog song?
For me it's:
Genesis - The Musical Box. It's so dramatic, beautiful, and an outstanding arrangement. Works so well because the ending part is so different than the rest of the song. It's even more dramatic to WATCH LIVE. Gabriel is insane but its just... Mind blowing...

You should type what you were going to way about The Musical Box's ending, you'll probably explain it better than me. I didn't really find the words, im not good with english.

Your English is fine, my friend. Now I'll have to think up this brilliant explanation.
OK, the bit I'm talking about starts when it all goes quiet at around
08:05 (I'm referring to the Genesis Live version which I prefer) and
Gabriel starts the "she's a lady" bit. Quite spooky that bit, with some
good backing vocals. Some lovely guitar work, then he mentions "flesh"
and the goose bumps start. Then the keyboards come in, "I've been
waiting here for so long", crack on the snare. "You stand there with
your fixed expression", now it's really building up. "Why don't you
touch me now, now, now, now, now" and that's the killer bit. Hackett's
guitar goes up an octave and then into that brilliant solo, then the
pseudo-classical ending and it's gone.

Someone mentioned Siberian Kathru.. I think Howe is incredible at the end of it and keeps me wondering about the richness of Steve' lines and the fact he doesn't leave anything without arrangement no matter the position in the song or the volume..
And I also like very much the power of the ending of Lark's Tongues In Aspic part II which seems to me like the end of the whole album as well..

My vote goes to the very end of "Watcher of the Skies", the abbreviated version they did on the 1976 Tour will B. Bruford. This is on Three Sides Live as most of you know. Love that ending.
A close second would be the final notes of "The Knife", studio.
Love this EDIT button too, gives me a chance to add another one - the closing instrumental on "The Lady Lies", studio version. Phil's really doin' those drums, real hard jazz-like.

I guess the best ending of a song are (at least for me) The musical box again (it was my first choice) and also in the court of the Crimson King, the way it ends and then continuos only to end again with all the instruments "going up"...and then the album just stops!!! Brilliant

"Larks' Tongues in Aspic Part I" has a great ending. It just suddenly goes all spooky, it's brilliant. And I think, not as a song in itself, but as the conclusion of the album, "Eclipse" from DSotM is brilliant. It really manages to close off the album brilliantly. Those last two lines are great.

"Nine Feet Underground" also has a pretty good ending, even if it is a "Sunshine of Your Love" ripoff. But it fits very well into the musical context.
And I have to say "Cassandra Geminni" has a fantastic ending, with the orchestra, the final climactic explosion, and the sudden end. "Heart of the Sunrise" also manages to pull off the sudden ending very well.

fades out make me mad!
IMO, Learning to Live has a quite tremendous solo epilogue, but the fade out cuts down Mike's drum culminating . That is why I listen to the Live Scenes from NY version.
The last Tarkus solo part (from, dunno, the 17th minute or so) is great. A nice marching rhythm, and, again, live it's just spectacular.
As for Genesis, the Musical Box's ending just cannot cope with his goosebumping (if this word exists) intro. Return of the Giant Hogweed has a great ending though.
Too many to count on, anyway...

Most excellent choices both The ending to Chamber of 32 Doors is perfect in the sense that it really does complete the song -it's as if the best and most effective bit had been left to the end, in all its' understated evocativeness (hmm, spelling?)... Love it.

the ending of chamberof 32 doors might be the best ending of the first half of an epic of all times.A great way to leave the audience and have had the interval if the movie had been made. Then to come thundering back with Lilywhite Lilith. Genesis in their heyday certainly thought a lot about what they were doing atmospherically , emotionally , sequentially , lyrically. Pity they discovered that they would sell better with tracks like No Reply At All.

There are so many epic endings, it's difficult to choose favorites, but....
Suppers Ready (of course): pure emotion, gets me every time!
Starship trooper (the Yessongs version): Howe & Wakeman just building & building to that final arpeggio...
Tarkus (again, the live version): Spectacular: ELP at their finest.
Seven Stones (Genesis): The Mellotron coda is beautifully understated, but for me makes this song one of the standout tracks from Genesis's early career - love it!
So many more.... God, I love progressive rock

Ending of The Musical Box is indeed one of my favorites. But I
agree with mentioning also Chamber of 32 doors as a favorite Genesis
ending.
I like the end of Ciclos by Canarios where we hear the voice of God who is a bit disappointed (at least, that's my impression)

Octavarium has a great outro
also, Return to Forever - Majestic Dance has such a dark ending, especially when compared to how light most of the song can be

For me Symphony X's THE ODYSSEY (The Track). Ends perfectly!

Oh, Chamber of 32 Doors. That gets honorable mention; what a beautiful
finish to the first lp of an album. That's a favorite Genesis track.
Otherwise:
•Suppers Ready
•The Knife
•Starship Trooper
•Finally Free
•Eclipse(whole song is an ending)
Outside Prog:
•Stairway to Heaven
•The End (Beatles)
•Hallowed be Thy Name

Musical Box has indeed a truly great ending and there are many other Genesis tunes that also could qualify. My own preference would be the outro of the Dire Straits tune "Planet of New Orleans"

Cassandra Geminni/Take the Veil Cerpin Taxt both have great climaxes at the end of them...
I can't really think of an all-time favorite ending though...I'd probably go with 21st Century Schizoid Man...it's very psychotic and it manages to give me a headache I enjoy.

are you refering to the spoken 'attention planets of the solar federation, we have assumed control, we have assumed control...'
or are you talking about all of that terrible noise coming from Lifeson
