This thread oviously goes out for all the musicians or people that make music and/or are in a band.
Please Im very interested in hearing about the kind of music you do, your bands name, if you have a song in mp3 to download from somewhere, or simply to know a little about the kind of music you play and your influences.
Ok, I go first. I have a band and right now we are planning to record an album (not professionaly!!!). We are three boys, me being the only one over 18...the others 17. We are lacking a drummer, but probably a cousin of mine who plays the drumms will help us with the recording. We do prog (obviously) that relay on guitar and bass only, though we are planing to incorporate a keyboard some day. We have some long songs ( two of 9 min, one of 8 and one that we are working on but will probably last more than 10 min.)...and also one very short one ( 59 seconds...), we also have a couple of instrumental songs, and are currently composing/writting an EPIC!!! We have not even come to the middle of the story we want to tell and the song is already 12 minutes long...so it seems to be loooooooong!!! jejeje
Our influences are mainly Led Zeppelin, Rush, some Dream Theater , Genesis (Gabriel) and maybe some King Crimson and Yes (but not that virtuoso) jejeje
What about you?

Wow you guys are YOUNG! HA!
Anyway.....I record with my 5-string electric violin. My influences are Gong, Hawkwind, Mark Wood, Neil Young, shred guitarists.....spacerock! My music has alot of world influence, and sometimes danceable beats, so it can sound alot like Aftro-Celt Sound System at times.
There are some MP3s for download at my soundclick site:

Telekinetigram is great, ViolinCyndee. I like the world influence, and the violin work is fantastic, very interesting both melodically and timbrally (if that's a recognized word).
My band's music is at www.myspace.com/mjollnirfalls. It has odd time signatures, occasionally weird timbres, and a fairly strong King Crimson influence.

I just got a demo of recording software, I'll get the full version soon I hope... anyway I've done a cover version of the extremely obscure theme song for "King Koopa's Kool Kartoons" (don't ask why), a hip-hop remix of "moonlight on vermont", some annoying repetitive techno loops, and I'm working on a "Batman" medley inspired by online fads, John Zorn, and various inside jokes right now. My recording equipment includes a lego camera. My personnel are myself and two friends who play clarinet and saxophone sometimes. My instrumental credits are guitarist, bassist, and keyboardist, as well as cheap 'Beatbox' drumloop programmer. Since I don't have the full version, all songs must be in 4/4 if I want any drums at all. But $20 should get me where I want.

violincyndee i really like the way you play the violin.
I have been playing the violin for 2 years and I play in a high school metal band. We've only been playing for 2 months together. We have a female lead vocalist, 2 guitars, 2 violins and a drummer and we still need a bass player. The major influences in the band are dream theater, metallica and other metal bands. Personally, my influences are psichodellic rock specially pink floyd and jazz. We play covers of Pull me under, Nightwish's Nemo, mago de oz, angra and many metallica songs. we are currently working on our own songs and we hope to get to recording soon. Although we are from mexico, the vocalist rather sing and compose in english.

Very trippy music, ViolinCyndee - I like it!
You've played with some amazing musicians - and that is one cool violin.
I have a corner of MySpace at http://www.myspace.com/Certif1ed - http://www.myspace.com/Certif1ed .
I've been playing piano since I was 4 - but there's no piano in these tracks. I'm a qualified singing teacher, but I only do backing vocals on one track. I taught myself a few chords on the guitar when I was 12, and have never looked back... or forwards. I didn't learn any more chords, as these songs show
I currently record with a work colleague who owns 14 keyboards and a mini PC-based studio. It's hard to say what our influences are - he listens to a lot of Gary Numan, Peter Gabriel, Rob Zombie and Nine Inch Nails, while I listen to just about anything - although my main influences are probably NWOBHM and late 1990s trance music.
It's hard to say what our music sounds like - the concept is to produce a blend of rock, electronica and stuff we like, but primarily to write songs until we find a style we like - then experiment around it.
A few people have said we sound like Kevin Moore / OSI / Chroma Key - but, having never heard their music, I can't verify this.
I'm responsible for all guitars and roughly 70% of composition and keyboards, while Andy does a great job of the vocals and 90% of the mixing and production.
We both write lyrics that are basically about things going wrong - ordinary stuff that happens in the real world but most people choose to ignore in the hope it'll go away. We're realists

I think of myself as a musical experimentalist: my influences are mainly Rock and 20th Century Classical. I have composed and recorded some extremely diverse pieces ranging from straight Rock to avant-garde electronic "sound painting". I've also written orchestral music, including symphonies. I've been making music of some kind or other since 1978 (although the early stuff makes me cringe now!)
I work alone (although I did form a couple of bands in the 80's) and my ultimate aim is to try to amalgamate all my musical tastes into a single unified sound (for example, atonalism with a strong beat - a little trick that Schoenberg missed!)
I also allow all my music to be downloaded for free from my website at http://www.herring.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk - http://www.herring.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk .
I make my own CDs too, including the cover artwork. I am currently trying to work out how to sell these online. I sold some through Ebay a couple of years ago but had some bad experiences with them, so I'm looking for another method. If anyone can help me out I'd be extremely grateful.
I also write weird (and sometimes humourous) poetry and other things; all this is on the website too. I wrote a sequel to Lewis Carroll's Jabberwocky that is quite popular in some circles! I'm also in the process of writing a book on the development of the Classical Symphony.
My music is not to everyone's tastes, but being so diverse in styles I would like to think that everyone could relate to at least one of my compositions, and as it's free you've got no excuse not to dip in and try some pieces out!

I play guitar in a band, inactive at the moment due to studies etc.
I'm 25 and our first demo came out 6 years ago.
Name of the band: Coy (based in Greece)
playing sth like Pantera and old Metallica, not prog, although it has some proggy elements
that's all, we could have produced our 2nd demo somewhat 3 years ago if our producer hadnt f######ed our recordings........

The Owl, is known to occasionally turn out a CD.
I'm not in a live band at the present time, having been concentrating on doing the studio thing though I do envision a return to live performing.
I'd have to say my biggest influences musically were Miles Davis, Jimi Hendrix, Cream, King Crimson, Mahavishnu Orchestra and composers like Ravel, Debussy and Stravinsky.
Currently, I write and record instrumental prog that tends towards symphonic and fusion with some dashes of Zeuhl and other odd flavorings. My instruments are guitar and bass guitar, plus i do a little keyboards (nothing horrifically technical, more for atmosphere and harmonic coloring, I WON'T give guys like Chick Corea or Patrick Moraz sleepless nights anyday soon). At the present time, I have ZERO inerest in doing vocal prog, it just never clicked for me though I do enjoy listening to it, I just can't write vocal tunes to save my life.
My newest disc just became available on CD Baby : http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/owlwatches - www.cdbaby.com/cd/owlwatches and the samples should give you a decent picture of what I'm up to creatively.

My main band is called Into the Dementia (bonus points for anyone who can say where we got the name from!). We're a progressive metal band hailing from Staten Island, NY. Right now we are back down to a three-piece, with just myself on guitar (recently turned 17), a drummer and vocalist (15 and 16, respectively). We've been around in one form or another for 2 years now, first beginning as a thrash band, then doing the prog/power thing, and now all out prog metal. My main goal is NOT to create prog metal in the vein of Dream Theater, because much of that stuff isn't very progressive to me. My vision is to take REAL prog and make it metal, without those lame chug-along pseudo-metal riffs. We've played a bunch of shows on the Island, as well as a gig in Philly. We're looking for a keyboardist right now, but to say that there are no prog fans on Staten Island is an understatement...let alone progsters who play keys!
I've played in a couple of other bands, as well. I did live work for a now-defunt thrash band, Decimate, and played one show with a power metal band Infinite (totally local bands, of course).
Aside from ItD, I'm involved in a drone/ambient project called Quiet, which consists of 2 guitarists and 2 bassists (as well as some keys). We'll be recording on this coming Sunday.
I'm in an avant-garde metal side-project called Sub Arbore Sedent. We have material written for an MCD which we plan to record...sometime!
Lastly comes my doom band, DoomChapel. We're a mix of funeral, classic, and melodic doom metal. We haven't rehearsed in a while, but hopefully we will be getting back on track soon.
I should also mention my one-man black metal project, Necrotic Grimlair, which I created a couple years ago. To put it mildly...it was horrendous!

I'm in a melodic death metal band (not the run-of-the-mill melodic death metal band), which is vocalless and drummerless at the moment. That's kind of it. Funny thing is - despite the fact that we have only 3 songs near completion and no drummer or vocalist, we still kind of have a record deal. Go figure But we are damn good
Then there's the stuff i write in my spare time, which is COMPLETELY different. It's kind of some trippy, avant-gardeish classical music (not orchestra type stuff, more a small group of instruments) that seems to stem from confusion more than anything
Don't have any sounds of either available, sorry.

I dont have a band, and for me is better, cos after working 5 years alone I dont need a band to critizice mi ideas or tell me I have to change this and this, I rather work alone because the only person I have to satisfy is myself.
Well more to the point I Started composing at the age of 11, but my material was very ridiculous. At the age of 14 I began writing metal and a few months later prog metal. Then I got interested in classical and soundtrack music and began composing "symphonic"pieces made of 16 instrument and I got them to record them on this program called guitar pro. Although it sounds like midi files the composition is there.
I just recently finished my Symphonic prog project and it consist on 6 long songs. It is called Symphonic Dream and I just cant wait to uploaded here so all of you wise listeners and musicians give me your opinion. Its like a mixture of light, gothic (kind of castlevania music) and progressive.

I used to play lead guitar in a spanish band dedicated exclusively to perform songs from The Rolling Stones. The name of the band was "De Rolling band" (spanish and latin people will understand the joke). We actually played in several little festivals in France and Morocco. It was very funny!!
I would have prefered to play in a Pink Floyd tribute band or something like that but I never met enough musicians interested in prog rock.

I have a band called Aardvark. There is a bio & everything - which is all made up. It's actually just me & my PC. I'm not very gifted as far as playing any instrument although I could probably hold my own on Drums. I play a bit of Guitar & Keys.
I think that my gift (such that it is) is in composition. I use my PC & a bunch of Samplers & Virtual Instruments to realize my compositions.
You can find all of this at http://www.soundclick.com/aardvarktxusa - http://www.soundclick.com/aardvarktxusa - Bio Page
http://www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandID=396963 - http://www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandID=396963 - Music Page - 19 songs - all downloadable.
The songs at the top of the list are the newest & the most Progressive. Some of the stuff at the bottom may be worth a listen. The lower you go on the list, the older the stuff is - The oldest song on there was done in the fall of 04/spring of 05 - when I was a complete newbie at computer recording. I'd like to think I've gotten better in the interim.
Your mileage may vary.
Thanks in advance for listening.

Hello! Play guitar in a band called Karva Checkpoint, we're currently gigging in Manchester tryin to fly the prog flag amongst a myriad of "Manc" rock. Our influences include The Mars Volta, A Perfect Circle, Kate Bush, Tool, Babe Ruth, Primus, Yes etc.
Some of us studied jazz so we try and do a bit of improv n jammin live. Got a female singer which I suppose is pretty different, she's quite experimental n she also uses a Roland Space Echo live! You can check out our tunes @ http://www.karvacheckpoint.com - www.karvacheckpoint.com . We have some "normal" songs i.e. 4-5 mins long but I recomend the serious proggers check out "Same Old Story", "Sirens" and "Boredom Is The Devil". These tunes are all touching the 10 min mark or over!
We're really keen to hear what people think because I feel our stuff is quite original n it's kinda of hard to say we sound like so and so.

I play guitar, bass, lap steel, banjo, mandolin, dulcimer, flute, keyboards, Moog, ARP, and PAIA synthesizers, and drums.
I played in various bands throughout my late teens and early twenties. In those bands we did mostly originals and some covers. Nothing too prog inspired, more "bar band" stuff.
Since 1995 or so I have recorded 7 albums and 7 E.P.'s of original music in my home studios. My music is pretty versatile ranging from acoustic to heavy metal to bluegrass to electronic to prog. Since I have gotten a Mellotron (software version) my music is starting to become a little "Proggier". All of the albums/E.P.'s I make are private press type of things. I write and record them and then press a few of them to give to family and friends. I have no contracts with labels or anything. I do it because I love and need to be creative and compose music.
A lot of my albums and E.P's are "experimental" in nature. One of my E.P.'s called "Moog Music" featured pieces in which I played pre-recorded taped through my Moog Micromoog synthesizer. As the tapes played through the Moog I would then "process" the tapes using the Moog's filter and modulation capabilities re-recording the "processed" tapes digitally on my computer at the same time. I have another E.P. called "Duets For Synthesizer" in which the pieces consist of Moog Micromoog and ARP Odyssey synthesizer "duets".
The last album I recorded is called "A Thread Of Light In The Cloak Of Darkness". It is an album of "loop" music created on guitar and electric piano. All of the pieces start with one loop and then I add other loops on top of the first until the pieces become walls of sound. This idea was very much inspired by Brian Eno. You can check out this album at my music download page at http://www.soundlift.com/band/music.php?id=102893 - http://www.soundlift.com/band/music.php?id=102893
Since 1996 I have also played with a band called "House Music" in which 100% of what we play is improvised. We tend to be quite "Proggy". I play guitar, keyboards, and drums in "House Music". Now that I have the software Mellotron I am dying to get a laptop computer so I can play the Mellotron "live" with them as well. I have recorded 18 albums with "House Music".
I am also half of a bluegrass/old style country blues duo called "Spooky Garcia" in which I play guitar, banjo, mandolin, dulcimer, and lap steel guitar. We are working on our first CD.

Hello all !
As some of you know, I play in 2 bands : Parabole and Oddyssey.
Parabole is a french hard rocking pop affair with prog elements, with influences too many to mention. A power trio for now in which I play bass and do backing vocals, Parabole is seeking a keyboard player. To have an idea of our sound, visit http://www.parabolerock.com - www.parabolerock.com (french only) and http://www.myspace.com/parabolerock/ - www.myspace.com/parabolerock/
Oddyssey is a prog metal band influenced by Rush, Opeth, Porcupine Tree and Iron Maiden (to name a few), with female lead vocals. A five piece band (lead vocals, 2 guitarists of which I am one, a bass player and a drummer), you can hear us at http://www.oddyssey-web.com - www.oddyssey-web.com and at http://www.myspace.com/oddysseyweb/ - www.myspace.com/oddysseyweb/
Feel free to comment once you have visited these sites, and thank you all for listening !

I write acoustic 'pop' (think 60's) stuff with a friend of mine, but we also do long jams and the occasional prog piece (he's not too keen on prog, yet...). When I play on my own, I do fusion and classical sounding stuff. I usually just do lengthy improvs (my speciality!). Prog being my #1 influence, weird melodies and time signatures always show up when I'm at the helm of a guitar! Influences...king crimson, yes, elp, genesis, gentle giant, jethro tull, pink floyd, rush, return to forever, anything classical, jazz fusion, psych pop, and just a bit of metal (for sudden dynamic changes!)
------------- for those about to prog, we salute you.

Hello, everyone!
I guess the term progressive electronic rock (or "progtronic rock") would work in my case. I like aggressive guitars, synths, basses and acoustic drums, with a far amount of counterpoint. The pieces are all instrumentals.
I suppose I do not like the more meandering parts of progressive rock. But I love old Rush, like Hemispheres.
New technologies have expanded the horizon of what I can do, but the learning curve can be tough.
Feel free to check out my pieces at: www.soundclick.com/jeffreynaness
