Prog Archives Collaborators’ Top 5 Albums Of 2005:

The inaugural Collaborators annual top 5 certainly has a controversial edge to it. Some commentators might be of the view that 3 of the 5 albums aren’t even Prog Rock, but there can be no denying the freshness and vitality that Porcupine Tree, Opeth and TMV bring to the scene. Traditional Prog Rock is represented by “Present” from the re-emergent VDGG and Wobbler’s paean to the 70’s “classic era”. There was very little between the top 3 albums and in all over 80 albums were nominated.

1. http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_CD.asp?cd_id=7289">

http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_BAND.asp?band_id=290 - – Deadwing.

This album follows the pattern (plan?) of PT’s albums getting progressively heavier musically, but still managing to be Prog Rock. A real grower it features emergent Porcupine Tree classics such as Halo, Deadwing, Open Car, Lazarus and the fans-favourite Arriving Somewhere But Not Here. To quote reviewer Bryan Adair:” Deadwing has the best flow of any release they've made since Signify…recommended for all music fans, but hardcore progheads may frown upon it.”

2. http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_CD.asp?cd_id=7535">

http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_BAND.asp?band_id=343 -   - Present.

Twenty –Seven years VDGG fans have waited for a new studio release and they weren’t to be disappointed. Two CDs “Songs” and “Improvs” prove that musically they still have what it takes and in Hammill they have a vocalist who transcends time. Choice tracks include Nutter Alert, Every Bloody Emperor and the sax-driven instrumental Boleas Panic.

“I was hooked! Right from the first moment Hammill's vocals filled my speakers and ears, shivers ran down my spine , goose bumps stated appearing all over my starved body” enthused Prog Archives own Hugues Chantraine

3. http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_CD.asp?cd_id=8133">

http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_BAND.asp?band_id=1122 - - Ghost Reveries

Seen as a more honest representation of Opeth’s Prog Rock credentials than the well-received but restrained Damnation, this album is almost the perfect synthesis of Death Metal and Prog. Open-minded prog-fans will be able to see beyond the growls and enjoy the joyous power-prog of such tracks as Ghost of Perdition and The Baying Of The Hounds as well the exotic Atonement and quirky The Grand Conjuration.
“Highly recommended album, intelligent music for progressive metal lovers of all ages, only those suffering from chronic allergic reactions to progressive death metal should stay far away from Ghost Reveries.” Reported PA Prog-Metal Specialist Vanwarp.

4. http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_CD.asp?cd_id=7305">

http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_BAND.asp?band_id=1033 - - Frances The Mute

Seen by many as the future of Prog Rock this TMV magnum opus has certainly helped re-awaken mainstream press interest in our favourite genre. The 30 minute epic Cassandra Gemmini will tell you everything you need to know about TMV and more besides.

As PA Collaborator Kurt Zander put it:” stop reading this review and go buy this, whooaaaaah!!” Quite.

5. http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_CD.asp?cd_id=8030">

http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_BAND.asp?band_id=1698 - – Hinterland

Brimming with Mellotron and unabashed 70’s prog references this is an album that most Prog Rock fans should enjoy immensely. The title track Hinterland is the best of a very good bunch and clocks in at a very pleasant 27 minutes.

“This album harkens back to the glory days of symphonic prog and is a must have for your prog collection” stated PA’s The Progtologist back in July.

Not really much of an "interesting" selection. These were all standout albums
that deserved to be in the top 5. I would have chose them all (with the
exception of Wobbler, for not hearing it) just in a different order.

Bah. I tried to rig things by voting for the Residents as my no 1 choice but it just wasn't going to happen, was it?

Anyway, good to see 3 of my choices there at least.

I still have to hear Wobbler and Van Der Graaf Generator, but the other three are surely in my top list.

Only one of my choices made the top 5 (VDGG). It's a good selection of contemporary progressive rock, although the absence of Guapo is a bit of a mystery (or am I biased?).

Yup, Aerial was on my list - a cd-long concept piece. Perfectly conceived and executed. Defintely one of the standout albums of the year for me. Just unfortunate that not enough of the other collabs thought so too... Shame on them

Van Der Graaf, Volta and Wobbler.

I also voted for Animal Lover by the Residents and Fantomas' Suspended Animation.

...oooh hang on. I voted for Guapo too, I seem to recall. Maybe I didn't vote for Wobbler after all.

I'll give you that - and that album was somewhere in my top X. But as several of us voted for albums beyond the safety net of mainstream prog - I think that was a fair question!

Posted By: Trotsky
Date Posted: January 05 2006 at 21:17

I think that one factor that may have influenced the list is that it takes time to wade through albums and I think by now I have heard only around 10 new prog albums for 2005 ... for eg, I'll only get to hear the Kate Bush a little later because it's not out yet in Malaysia ...

I know that this year, I fell in love with IQ's Dark Matter which was released in 2004 ... so I wouldn't have voted for it in a 2004 list even though I now think it's one of the best albums of the decade

I'm sad, yet not surprised to see that neither Pallas's The Dreams of Men nor Pendragon's Believe are on the list.

If it were a top 10 list, one or both should have been there.

It appears that the collabs don't find neo-prog yummy...

I was very disappointed with Pepper's Ghost Cyggie. It just lacks that indescribable "something". Its on my re-listen list for 2006 though.

As for Pallas' Dreams Of Men,well it starts out a killer and you think that it is going to be a classic album. Then it just flatlines...............

I haven't heard the new Arena yet, but the Pallas was very good IMO, and doesn't flatline as you put it Tony. Just my opinion.

Too bad Glass Hammer's The Inconsolable Secret didn't make the cut. It's
definitely one of 2005's most amibitious and best sounding progressive
works.

Cinema:

I'm glad you mentioned Glass Hammer's new album. It completely slipped my mind!  I must say that if certain albums are on the list that harken back to the "glory days" of prog (ie. the 70s) like the VDGG and the Wobbler albums, then I certainly hope The Inconsolable Secret is not far behind.

BTW: I've been so caught up retracing the past, that I haven gotten any of the albums in the top 5.

several people have mentioned Glass Hammer's Inconsolable Secret. I for one thought long and hard about it as GH are one of my favourite modern prog bands. However, I couldn't find it in my heart to find a place for it in my top 5. I just think it's flawed in several ways. The second CD is pretty extraneous, for me, and the epics on  the first CD fall a bit flat. They're just over ambitious and sound slightly feeble in parts. The lyrics, too, are abominable, marring the listening experience more than usual. It's good, just not great, certainly not in the league of TMV's album (which just gets better and better) or Porcupine Tree etc.
Close, but no cigar...

Although it was a bit of a departure from Immortal? and The Visitor, I feel it still is a strong album, not as strong as say... Believe or Side One.

GREAT WORK, Tony!!!!Clap

It's not what I thought but I was not involved during vote due to work schedule was really tight. I wonder that "Frances The Mute" is here, because I don't think it deserves. Their previous album is better. Deadwing? It's not the best album by PT - so I'm wondering why it's number one? And why NEAL MORSE "One" is not here?

WOBBLER deserves it. Yeah! VdGG is OK without disc 2 which is so boring.

BTW, I fully RESPECT the team decision with this TOP 5. Most importantly we start new thing this new year. Congrats!!!!

I miss...

Riverside - Second Life Syndrome

Shadow Gallery - Room V

Anyway, I think Ghost Reveries is the best of those 5, and Opeth's album or TMV one deserves more than Deadwing the number 1 position, although, of course, Deadwing must be in the top five.

I agree in all these albums and their positions but, in my opinion, you forgot to mention Oceansize "Everything Into Position", Dream Theater "Octavarium" and Meshuggah "Catch 33"

I'm all for Deadwing as the #1 CD of 2005, but conspiculously missing is 'Second Life Syndrome' (as others have echoed) by Riverside. Haven't heard enough of the others to argue their merit or lack of it.

I have to say, though, I am pretty surprised to see Sigur Ros's Takk... so high up there. It came out pretty late in the year, I didn't think it would be recognized as much as it was. Then, of course, there was Neal Morse's ?, which I expected to be WAY higher. WAY higher.

Eh, oh well.

NO COMPLAINTS!

I have and enjoy all 5 of those albums. Especially nice to see Wobbler make it. So there is great new prog coming out in the 2000s after all. For those of us usually stuck in the '70s, that's a nice thing.

Ok, fair choice but where is DT? Surely their album is better than VDGG!

I know there have been some other bands like Pagan's mind and Shadow gallery, Biomechanical, Co&Ca, Angra and John Petrucci that may not be included but defently DT should be in the top 5!

The Black Halo should've definitely made this list in my opinion. Masterpiece.

I would like to say Octavarium, but it's too widely debated about whether it's really a "great" album or not.

I don't think so. Octavarium is a mediocre Dream Theater album. Both Volta
and VDGG far surpassed Octavarium in my book.

I did't listen to wobbler's and VDGG's albums but the other are top 10 at least, i would include Neal Morse's album too

Posted By: Goldenavatar

Hmmm, none of those would make my top 5 (or probably even 10). Although I am unfamiliar with a couple of them, Wobbler for instance, though I am quite interested in hearing them. I've noticed a definite Metal leaning of most of the people who say they listen to prog. Which is totally fine, but where are all the symphonic nuts?

In my opinion Glass Hammer was very slighted in this list. The musicianship alone puts them far above Porcupine Tree. And I like Porcupine Tree, don't get me wrong, but they don't hold a candle as far a musicianship is concerned, again in my humble opinion.

I am upset, but not surprised, to see some excellent albums missing.

Mimi's Magic Moment by Salem Hill

Welcome Humans by Thirteen of Everything

Fortunate Observer of Time by Frogg Cafe

Only heard TMV Frances and Deadloss sorry Deadwing by Porcupine 'we hate prog' Tree.

IMHO there is a big difference and Frances is the standout album. Deadloss erm sorry  wing is ok and has it's moments but am i the only person to find it a bit dreary?

I wouls not be surprised that in the future the PT album the lostdead sorry lostwing no,no, dead wing will be revised downwards and that Frances will be hailed as a classic. It took Vivaldi 200 years to be recognised so theres plenty of time.

I own the number one favourite "Deadwing". The others I have not yet heard. "Deadwing" is a well chosen number one and I dare say that the others are all up there, however, I would like to have seen Glass Hammers' "The Inconsolable Secret" and  Kate Bush's "Aerial" further up the ranks.

I'm amazed at the number of people that have said that Octavarium deserves to be in the top 5, this is the worst album that they have released from the 6 that I have and I cant see FII and WDADU being worse from the few songs that I've heard.

BTW is there a list for 2004 as well.
