Just thought I'd put one of these things up 'cause I didn't see any polls like this currently on the forums... If your favorite band isn't on here, i'm sorry. I only listed the big ones I have albums of. If your fave isn't here, just vote "other..." and post what it is below...

The genre system I'm using is the one used here, so just go check the band profile to see where it lies. Other "progressive rock" is for all the unclassified bands and "post rock" is what a few of those bands in the unclassified section are, like "Godspeed..." and maybe Zappa...

And yes, I am well aware that Spock's Beard, Anglagard, and Dream Theater are not from the 70s...I was origninally going to have only 70s bands when I wrote the poll, but changed my mind halfway through and forgot to change the title... Ouch.

Isn't this a little bit of a broad question?

Date Posted: September 24 2004 at 02:54

Everyone has a favourite prog band. The question is reasonable I think. It's not asking who you think is the best band or who has made the greatest contribution to prog but simply who is your favourite.

I chose other progressive as in Vander Graf Generator...really you need to broaden this list some..no Vdgg,no Gentle Giant...these two names are fairly common.

Thats kinda confusing as it says favourite 70's prog band so I voted for Floyd, but then I see Spocks Beard hmm...

Anyway if we are talking about favourite prog band any era then mine is obviously Porcupine Tree

Fine enough, but is the poll is about 70ies Prog Rock Bands, what the heck is S.Beard, D.Theater and Pink Floyd doing here ! ! ! And where is Camel, Rennaisance, Triumvirat, Focus and Trace. I did vote ELP being the "purist" I am, which doesnt mean ELP is my favorite band. Welcome Back My Friends....and Tarkus are vintage albums, compared to a Graham 1960 bottle of Port Wine as Fragile and Yessongs are to a Dow Port 1970. Now s for the "other" labels just disconsider, there are no such as "other" in Prog Rock ! By the way; My favorite Prog Rock band - Rick Wakeman......

Why did you list Pink Floyd. PINK FLOYD WAS A 70's BAND YOU SILLY GOOSE. Yes I know...60's,80's and even the 90's as well but the 70's is the period of their most defining music....unless you do not consider them prog. Some people don't. I do!

I didn't read the small print! I took the poll question to be the thread title which makes sense. I could be wrong, and often am, but I doubt whether Anglagard,Dream Theater or Spocks Beard existed in the seventies.

I agree with the latter two, definately and know nothing of Anglagard but I will venture the same.

Well, I like almost all that's on the list. But my favorite's not on there. Gentle Giant in case you wondered- but I never got to see them. Saw Yes do Topographic Oceans when it first came out, and then again for Relayer, and a few more times. First saw Genesis promoting Trick of the Tail, with Bruford doing the drumming. Caught their tours for the next couple of albums. Kansas, Camel, IQ, Marillion with and without Fish, Spock's Beard, Porcupine Tree... I guess I've been lucky. I'm getting kinda misty remembering how great it was.

Has anybody been able to actually define why they LOVE this music? I haven't. I've tried to figure it out, but finally gave up and decided to just enjoy it and not to wonder why. And I'm not young anymore either.. so it has nothing to do with youth.

An interestingly structured poll indeed, but polls are good fun anyway.

A thought, if Dream Theater and Spock's Beard had existed in the 70's, would they have been ahead of their time?

My answer to that thought is each individule is what he/she is because of the expereinces he has.  Change a few things along the way and that person is probably not the same.  So I think those people would have been different because their experiences and influences would have been different.

PF did indeed flirt with the Prog scene in the 70ies and late 60ies, but became a mainstream band with a very definite pattern of music that doesnt put them into Prog Rock. Their "thing" is a bluesy setup with blues structure shining through their music. Low key C note on guitars an lots of hammond tunes as fill out. Dont get me wrong I listen to PF nearly every day, and Roger Waters is one of my very favorites. Love his music, love his lyrics. Amused To Death is a super album, Pros and Cons of Hitchiking is fantastic, Radio KAOS is equally fantastic. I even have a downloaded track - Knocking on Heavens Doors performed by R. Waters which is hillarious. I do have serious considerations regarding PF being a Prog Rock band PER SI....

Ponter asked if anyone had managed to define why they love prog. Well,I think I have. My three favourite forms of music are classical, electronic, and prog. (Not always in that order). And the reason I wound up with those three are partly emotional and partly intellectual. The emotional explanation is simply that those particular musical expressions are the ones most closely aligned with my character and personality and the intellectual explanation is that they are also very intelligent, creative and original forms of music which satisfies the intellectual in me who hates the clicheed and banal. I think those three forms of music manage to steer clear of clichees and banalities more than any other form of music I have heard and also have a greater artistic vision and scope than other forms of music. That's as close to an explanation I can get.

The poll's question is clearly what is you favorite 70 prog band so I wonder what dream theater or spocks beard are doing in this list. But this aside.

My favourite 70 prog band is without any doubt Yes, "although" genesis comes very close. For me these two bands have defined what (in my opinion) progmusic is all about, experimental both with different instruments and approaches to music.

Both groups (also through for other bands of course) came from an era where popmusic consists of short songs of aproxx. 3 minutes, where they experimented with tunes, adding more tunes within a single theme, or even altering the theme through the song, and if nescesary the song took as long as it took to create the atmosphere they tryed to achieve, some songs could be done in two minutes others required the complete A or B side of an album. This approach to music altered the rockmusic world, for everything was possible and allowed and due to their succes other artists where inspired to create music which was not nessecerraly (very poor english) comercial in terms of creating a single-hit, but more to create a whole album to explore their creativity and their musical skills. And knowing that there was an audience for their efforts.

And still after 30 years their music still stands as an inspiration source for all new progrock bands, though the sounds have changed, you will still here their influence.

By the way, for favourite prog band for me at this point in time (my favourite group changes regulary) would be arena.

with love Tuxon

Zheul is the only genre of prog music that was clearly invented by a single band: Magma. It means bands that play in their vein, including making use of the language Kobaiah Magma invented.

Which reminds me: The poll asks: "Other Zheul", but as far as I know none of the bands listed are Zheul. And if one of the bands happen to be Zheul, how can one forget the inventors of that genre????

Ummm...right now my favorite is Soft Machine (pretty odd for an 18 year old).  I'm trying to get all of their studio albums, although it is nearly impossibe because some of them are out of print and veryyyy expensive (ex: Bundles, i have heard it is the best later-day, although I have the Softs on lp and I cannot stop listening to it, especially side 2)

But like everyone else i do love Genesis a lot.  They were one of my first introductions to prog, along with Yes.

Since those 90's bands were included, I voted for other prog metal. Either A.C.T. (pop metal?), Pain of Salvation or Spastic Ink.

Of the 70's bands, I think Yes or Gentle Giant made the largest number of great records during the 70's, but I think Crimson have made more great records over the years, so it depends on the definition. Best prog band during the 70's or best prog band FROM the 70's?
