I tend to agree with your evaluation. I also tend to prefer the "Old School" Prog to the new. That probably has more to do with my age than any other factor. Having been around & in the formative years (so to speak) when YES, ELP, Genesis (to name a few) were coming up had a huge impact on my young impressionable mind.
Don't get me wrong, I like a lot of newer Prog: Rush, Spock's Beard, Flower Kings, Dream Theatre, Transatlantic, Glass Hammer, Wobbler, to name a few.
I don't think either is "Better". A lot of new prog has built on the foundation of the old. Prog has changed & evolved with the times, rising & falling in popularity, even among the faithful. New Prog is simply (largely) different than old Prog. If you like something, embrace it; if you don't ignore it.

I think the old stuff is better because music was never done that way befor and was new to the peoples ears where as the stuff now is just the product of what was done befor, i also think thats not a bad thing but theres no band now that has made such an impact on me musically then the bands back in the 70's but maybe that will in time...

I tend to listen to newer music, though I do love the old stuff as well. I think many of the modern bands are taking and expanding upon the past greats.

Thats what i like about prog, and well, music in general, is that it over the years it skips, jumps and bounces off eachother into something thats completely different and the same all rolled into one.

I prefer 'Old School Prog'
Newer stuff (with the exception of prog-metal) doesn't thrill me at all!

I actually prefer Newer to Older prog. Save for King Crimson, alot of the earlier seems sapped of energy to me. but that's just my general opinion.

Well i dont think the old school was lacking any energy in my opinion it had just as much or more then todays but thats just me

definately old school here. Have heard some Dream Theater
and some others like TMV and I thought they were..... not
to my liking hah hah ha. The only 'new' prog group that really has
'grabbed' me would be Porcupine Tree.

i like newer stuff, but i HATE bands like Spocks Beard or Flower Kings
or Glass Hammer. theyre just.. dso fake. i mean they just copy Yes and
Gentle Giant and it's like... why listen to the posers when you can
listen to the originals? i mean sure spocks beard follows the prog
formula, but they arent prog at all.
good new prog = coheed and cambria, opeth, carptree, the mars volta, dredg, fantomas etc. bands that are actually progressive!
and i think it is ironic how most of the good prog bands are shunned
while ppl praise magic pie and other bands that do NOTHiNG for prog
besides copy older bands

Old school. I love the new bands, they are talented and innovative, but...
The sound is lost. When I listen to new bands I just don't get the feeling I get when I listen to the classics. For example, I really enjoy long, complicated epics of Transatlantic, with all the soloing, jamming, etc, but when I listen to Supper's Ready after I feel like I'm listening to something a level higher. It doesn't have many solos, it may be not as impressive musically, but the old proggers knew how to write genius compositions much better.
There are a few exceptions, like The Mars Volta, Dream Theater, and The Works of Patton, many post rock bands. But those are slightly different cases, DT practically invented progmetal, which is a relatively young genre. Avant garde bands like TMV or Mr. Bungle sound fresh because they're doing something completely new, inventing along the way.
That's what those new symphonic bands are missing, freshness of the compositions.
Or that's just me

I think, as has been mentioned above, that preference for one over the
other is largely based on which got you into the genre. I myself prefer
newer prog as I got into the genre through Neo-Prog bands like
Marillion, Pendragon and Arena. There are however exceptions, I really
like Genesis, Camel etc but then I was listening to them early on in my
discovery of Prog so perhaps that explains my liking of them over bands
I listened to later, like Yes, King Crimson and Van Der Graff
Generator, who I like quite a lot but noweher near the same level as I
like Marillion or Camel etc.

I am just now getting back into prog rock. I listened to the old school bands: Yes, Genesis, ELP and Tull back in the day. I've always loved that stuff. The last prog album I bought was Rush "Hemispheres." I did not like Marillion, Starcastle and Pendragon and steered clear of prog for over twenty years. I've seen many of these bands over the last ten years but have really steered clear of new prog until recently.
I think that the keyboard was a really big part of Britist prog 1967-1980. The bands I have listened to over the last few years, like Radiohead, Dream Theater, Mars Volta seemed to be guitar based and some very heavily influenced by 1980s metal. (The singer for DT actually sounds alot like Rob Halford.) But I am enjoying getting into some of the newer prog and opening up to it; although I do not think I will like most bands as much as the classic age of Brit rock. All those great bands. The Beatles, The Stones, The Who, the Moody Blues, Cream, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, Led Zeppelin, Yes, Genesis, King Crimson, ELP, Gentle Giant and the myriad artists and songwriters that came out of the British blues movement from Elton John to Sting. I think historically it was a great time for British music.

I prefer "old school" too. This might be because "the old prog bands", like Genesis, Jethro Tull and Pink Floyd, are the ones i learned to know and love first.
But I like also more recent bands like Spock's Beard, Mr Bungle, Angra, Dream Theater...

I love the old stuff, the 70's prog has something about it thats very hard to recapture.
The newer symphonic/metal prog bands seem to take the foundations of the 70s prog, and just recycle it, without really making anything new and truly progressive. However I really appreciate the bands that look at the old prog, and say "its been done, now lets do something new". Thats why I am very into the "POST ROCK/experimental" genre at the moment. They took the ideas of prog and changed the rules of rock, and of prog. Band like Godspeed You Black Emperor, Sigor Rus, and the Mars Volta are good exaples for what I mean.

Very well put, I agree entirely! Neither is "better", but being of an
age when I grew up on Yes etc., that was the music that made the
biggest impression on me.

i think that as a dream theater fan i should say that i prefer newer prog than the old one, but i'm not sure of that, since there is a largerr number of great old prog bands than of great new prog bands...nevertheless, this discussion is pointless, since, as it's name indicates, progressive music tends to make a progress, an evolution in music, so if you compare iit's different ages, you will find bands that are extremely different but all carry the name progressive, such as opeth compared to camel or genesis, or tool compared to jethro tull...

You cannot compare new prog to old prog. The originators had the best songs the best musicians and the hardcore of the best singers on the planet in Jon Anderson, Gabriel, Lake and the mighty Hammill.Alot of the bands mentioned on this thread come under this prog metal umbrella and they are all very average Joes.Of the most recent Prog bands my favourite is easily Porcupine Tree but I do like TFKS,IQ,Arena, and Riverside.Marillion with Fish gave us some memorable albums and concerts. Some of these bands being forwarded on here as prog is bewildering aka The Mars Volta to mention but one.Certainly not my cup of tea, however it does take all kinds.

I prefer "old school", which to me has more character and quality and variety. Things were more laid back in the 70's/early 80's, drugs played a bigger role in expanding the musicians' minds, there was less of a reliance on technology (i.e. the musicians had to try harder to achieve their results), there was no MTV, Brittany Spears, Americal Idol, and other crappy musical byproducts of more recent years.

I enjoy both equally. But some newer prog is far more
interesting than older prog could possibly be. Saens is a good
example. TMV is not. That is one disgusting half-arsed band
IMO! Pray to the gods of prog that TMV is not the future of prog.

Old school (I'm not from that time by the way). Possibly because I love
a lot of non-prog from the same era (Doors,Beatles, Led Zep), but I
don't dislike recent stuff - I like(d) Muse a lot, and Porcupine Tree
and Radiohead aswell.

2. Neo prog bands '80s
3. '60's protoprog

Well, age has a big role in this issue.
When I got into rock I was crazy about Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Alice Cooper and Deep Purple, and believe me, I hated The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Doors, Hendrix, Joplin, Cream, etc. just because that was "old stuff" and it sounded "lame" by contrast. I mean, young guys tend to prefer power over virtuosism, I guess.
It seems to me that nowadays there's a lot going on specially in prog-metal, which unfortunately is not my favorite genre (but I like it now and then). I see the new generation pushing for it hard, and they expect no mercy from their idols.
I prefer Yes and the rest of their peers to the "new school", as I have developed a taste for academic music, and I really don't care if the new symphonic band are "recycling" the old sound. What's wrong with that?. I mean, see how old our legendary heros are now! Is there any legendary prog band releasing master works these days? How long are they going to be around doing new and meaningful recordings?
I just expect that the new symphonic bands reach the level of craftiness needed to take the empty thrones of the 70īs gods, as it's starting to look.
------------- I like Tormato, so shoot me! Every person in the world can't think the same.
