What is, in your opinion, the saddest song ever? You can state one prog song, and one song in general, but it can be the same one!!!
Mine would be Welcome to the Machine for Prog and probably a movement in the 5th symphony from Gustav Mahler as my non-prog one!

Agreed - Robert Wyatt is capable of articulating sadness like few other singers, although often his lyrics are quite optimistic. His versions of Strange Fruit, Biko and Shipbuilding are all good examples, but Rock Bottom is his masterpiece.

I agree with this choice, but also find it one of the most beautiful songs ever. Hammill has a few...the real slammer is "Betrayed" on Over. Or Lennon's "Working Class Hero".

A man lies and dreams of green fields and rivers, But awakes to a morning with no reason for waking

Oh yes, "A Louse Is Not A Home" is my favourite pH composition. Not as sad as "Lost" or "House With No Door" though.
There are instrumental passages that almost upset me too:
The flute solo by Jaxon in "My Room (Waiting for Wonderland)", the sax
solo, also by Jaxon in "Man-erg" and Dicky Betts' guitar solo in the
Allman Brothers Band's live version from The Fillmore East, of
"Whipping Post". But of course, Duane Allman is amazing too on
that live performance.

It's "One Last Goodbye". It's a requiem for the Cavanagh brothers' (the lead singer and guitarist) mother. I don't listen to that song anymore because I feel I would be encroaching on something deeply private.
Peter Hammil's solo and VdGG material is often quite sad, but the saddest song for me is Procol Harum's "In Held 'Twas In I". Especially because of the lyrics - nothing fancy, the truth is writ quite clear.

Saddest prog song, for me, would be Goodbye Blue Sky, Welcome to the Machine or a lot of stuff from the Wall, or from Pink Floyd in general, because they're one of the most depressing bands ever.
Saddest non-prog song- either Lightning Crashes by Live, or a lot of stuff by Nirvana, like Come As You Are, because a lot of their lyrics are basically just saying "I give up on life"
Also, No Rain by Blind Melon, because it's like wanting to be depressed and dark, but not knowing why.

"Ceremony" Joy Division/New Order
The Joy Division performance of "Ceremony" at Birmingham University the night before Ian Curtis Hanged himself is emotionally charged. The lyrics are heartfelt. and a tear came from my upon hearing it the first time, its unbelievably depressing. However, you must know Joy Division and have thoroughly listenedto all theiralbums to truly appreciate the virtues of this despairing song.
Moreover, remaining memebers of Joy Division formed an inoffensive synth pop band known as New Order; New Order used this unfinished masterpiece as their first single under a new band name. The lead singer, Bernard Sumner, was disconcerted at the fact he was to be lead vocalist of the band.
This wekness of his vocals in NO's studio version"Ceremony" engender an array of emotions, pity and despair being the most prominent among them.
Other Sad Songs:
"Time Table" Genesis. The Chime work at the nd of this song is lugubrious.
"Summer 68" Pink Floyd
"Ride" Caravan. The guita creates a sense of hoplessness and unending confusuion. You become humbled after hearing this song

'Timetable', 'Seven Stones', 'Ripples' and 'For Absent Friends' by Genesis all have an undertow of sadness to these ears; their melodies have a deep rooted flavour of regret imo...
Also, 'Awaken' by Yes and 'The Last Goodbye' by Camel always move me a great deal as they seem to be a last throw of the dice for classic prog in a sense; neither band ever managed to reach the peaks those songs reached ever again imo.
Outside of prog, 'He Ain't Heavy He's My Brother' by The Hollies, 'She's Leaving Home' by The Beatles, 'Cold Morning Light' by Todd Rundgren and the harrowing 'Dark Globe' and 'If It's In You' by Syd Barrett also have very moving power.

The Wall? I thought that was a rather uplifting introspective overcoming of a bad situation or an unexpected turn in your life. I get inspiration not depression from that. However since we are the subject of Kansas two of the the most depressing songs I have ever heard
Dust in the Wind and Lonely Wind along with Eve of Destruction by Barry McGuire have to be three of the saddest, most depressing songs I have ever heard

Most that I can think of have already been said. I'll add "Home" and
"The Tide is Turning" by Roger Waters off of Radio K.A.O.S. A lot of
instrumental music is just as depressing (e.g. some GY!BE and some of
Eno's ambient work).

Anything from The Holy Bible by The Manic Street Preachers.
Probably would say either She is Suffering or This is Yesterday.

I can't think of a sadder thing tan a pointless life with no reason to live. A life whose only positive thing is a memory you're not sure if it's true. It's better to lost someone and keep its memory than non having met anyone special in your whole life.
By th way, my head was fine last time I checked. Thanks for your interest.

One singing as loud as they can, the other crying and the third one calling their girlfriends telling them how much they love them.....

Howabout - Spirit of the water by Camel, this was written by the late Pete Bardens and was performed at their last ever gig in Sheffield. Andy Latimer dedicated it to Pete. It's a very melancholy song, certainly Camel's saddest song.

Saddest prog song for me is Porcupine Tree - Stop Swimming.
Maybe it's time to stop swimming Maybe it's time to find out where I'm at What I should do and where I should be But no-one will give me a map
This part of the lyrics gets me every time I listen to it, it's just a perfect description of my life.
Pink Floyd - Nobody Home is also an extremely sad song.
The two saddest non-prog songs imo are both Blind Melon-songs, Soul One and Mouthful of Cavities. Shannon Hoon sings with this rough, almost painful edge in his voice that helps make these two songs masterpieces.

I can name many, many sad songs, in many genres.
There is no "saddest song ever," as the response to a song will always be an individual thing that is coloured by the listener's individual life experiences and associations.
Let's say two people look at a painting of a clown: The first starts to laugh, the second to cry.
For #1, clowns are funny, and one of the best days of his childhood was when his parents took him to the circus, where he had a really great time.
For #2, clowns are sad, because during the drive home from the circus, there was a terrible car accident, and both his parents were killed.
Both are "valid" responses.
(An extreme example, I know, but hopefully making my point.)
Song X was couple A's wedding theme -- they are still happily married.
Song X was also couple B's wedding theme, but she died of cancer six months after they were wed.
Our reactions to art are always coloured by our unique personalities and life experiences. We are each different, and so are our tastes.
On a related note, I have seen teen boys (encouraged by our society to be "tough" and to not express sensitivity) laugh callously at a painful scene in a movie, and cheer deaths, while some of the girls (encouraged more by society to express emotion) weep quietly.
I like the girls' reaction much better.
------------- "And, has thou slain the Jabberwock? Come to my arms, my beamish boy! O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!' He chortled in his joy.

No doubt it is all subjective Peter, yet it is fun so :
I think "My room" by VDGG is sadder than "A house with no door" (waiting for them to be broken ...).
I think "The letters" by KC is a nice choice but for me the saddest crimson must be the end of "The battle of glass tears" (the end of Lizard) where I can hear via the music that the battlefield is full of corps of another useless war.
Rock bottom is an album, not a song. I support that it is a very sad album and my choice goes to "Alifib" which is the saddest song for me (yet, one of the few songs I will never get tired of hearing) . For me, "Rock bottom" will allways be one of my desert island albums.

god has failed / RPWL
you'll never be forgotten
you've always on my mind
i look into the mirror
a good friend is hard to find
could anyone please tell me
if all was fixed before
this year spring comes to early
cause god has failed once more
the pictures i've found
your face looks still the same
whenever i'm a sleep
my heart will call your name
to tell about your life
is all about your life
is all i can do for you
your end has come to early
cause god has failed once more
Heroes Never Die / Mostly Autumn Live with the screen movies of all you favourite heroes passing by... sad....
The ways, the ins and outs of haven still elude us to the end
The tears, the sun the rain, I feel them on my face against my skin
We love you then, we love you still
And don't you know, don't you know that heroes never die,
They sail forever
Slow the rain falls, the memories blowing through
I stand with arms outstretched to catch the warmth of you
Eyes to the heavens, screaming at the skies,
Trying to send you messages, still choking on goodbyes
And I wonder why.
Gold November, yellow brown and green
I try to picture you somewhere in between
Cold the night falls, shadows drawing in,
The glimpse I had of you is torn in the wind
And I wonder why, tracing paths, we search the stormy sky.
The ways, the ins and outs of heaven still elude us to the end.
The tears, the sun the rain, I feel them on my face against my skin.
We loved you then, we love you still and don't you know, don't you know
That heroes never die, they sail forever.
Close my eyes now, and focus on the light.
You are more beautiful and never out of sight,
And tears that fall are blood from the heart, from the moment we part.
May I offer those tears for the love of the years
For the love
The ways the ins and outs of heaven still elude us to the end
The tears, the sun and rain, I feel them on my face and on my skin
We loved you then, we love you still and don't you know, don't you know
The ways the ins and outs of heaven still elude us to the end
If he's the sun the rain, I feel him on my face against my skin,
And when I open up that door and think of where we used to roam
And laugh and smile and drink with friends with all the love you know we have.
Don't you know, that heroes never die, they sail forever.

Hmmm... I think one of the saddest songs I know, 'prog' or not, would be
Stop Swimming, by Porcupine Tree, from Stupid Dream.

certainly a desert island album. I just discovered this website today, and

Forgot 'The Wall' by Kansas; one of the most beautifully sad songs in prog that also has one of the finest vocal performances I've ever heard.
'Les Morts Dansant' by Magnum is really tear-jerking; the live versions particularly have real power and Bob Catley's vocal is a true stunner.

I almost forgot about "Les Morts Dansant". As a tribute to just how powerful the song is, Patty Smyth did a cover of it that was pretty damn good. In fact, that was how I came to know the song.
As someone else mentioned, the notion of how song a sad is can only be subjective to the listener. Reading over this list, I've seen a good number of songs that some consider sad that I find hopeful or uplifting.
