Curved Air

Joni Mitchell - She might not be prog but what a beautiful voice she has! Full of passion and beauty. She's also a songwriter, plays piano, guitar and paints. I usually don't like female leading voices, but she is great.

Certainly there are. To name a few:
Lindsay Cooper - bassoon (played with Henry Cow, Slap Happy and Steve Hillage, for example)
Georgie Born - cello (plays on albums of Henry Cow, Bruford and National Health; also founded an all women band with Lindsay Cooper)
Barbara Dennerlein - organ (fusion; she publishes albums under her own name)
Ruth Underwood - percussion (played with Frank Zappa)
Mireille Bauer - marimba, xylophone, vibraphone (played with Gong)
Sophia Domancich - keyboards (played with Hatfield and the North; also solo albums and an album with Elton Dean of Soft Machine)

And the Cello player from Anekdoten... mhhh... I don't know if Sigur Rós's vocalist also plays something, but she is very good. Thinking... I think one of The Residents is a girl, wich is quite something. I don't know. The gender of musicians is not important for me. And, as far as I know, it is allways better to have a lot of women around......

I have a theory: your friend is ...(insert a word of your choice here)... ¿How can anyone hate music because of the sexual identity of it's creator?.
