Well I havent been listening to Prog for that long, only about a year now, but now that I have started listening to it, its almost all I can stand to listen to now.
I always want to expand my cd collection, but i dont like taking risks buying music because I'm kind of cheep. I really like the 70's prog rock bands such as:
Emerson, Lake, and Palmer King Crimson Yes Genesis Jethro Tull Gentle Giant Pink Floyd Rush
I was wondering if anyone could help me out and give suggestions to other bands that sound somewhat similar. Thanks in advance.

How about Camel and Van Der Graaf Generator or you can try the recordings by italian giants PFM, Le Orme and Banco del Mutuo Soccorso. The reviews on this site can help you to determine which albums you should buy.

You NEED Van Der Graaf Generator if you like all those bands on that list.

hi Karn Evil 9
I suggest you take Andrew's list (his are usually the most extensive and contain the best quality and also many unknown gem bands) and make it your wish list. Focus on 2-3 bands at a time and get 1-2 albums from each and then make up your mind and move on. There is really no need to go further after that list.

Try some 90's bands. Similarities to the bands you mentioned in abundence like Spocks Beard and The Flowerkings. Those two bands knock spots off some of the seventies bands, like Genesis and Gentle Giant!

This post serves two purposes. Firstly, I echo the recommendations of those above me.
Second, Karn Evil 9, I'm giving you a heads-up that that username will receive a lot of negative feedback from people thinking you are someone else. We had a poster of that same name a while back, and there were many huge problems with him (even though I miss him). He was ultimately kicked out for good and hasn't been allowed to post since.
Fair warning.

For me. the next progressive group that should be in that list would be early Marillion: 'Script', 'Fugazi', 'Misplaced'... Some other groups & albums you could try:
- Premiata - Chocolate Kings
- Maxophone - Maxophone
- Zappa - Apostrophe
- Mahavishnu Orchestra - Inner Mounting Flame, Birds of Fire
- Gong - Live etc, You

yeah Zappa is great, he always cracks me up. is there anyone similar to him? the closest i know is Steve Vai because he was taught by zappa and joe satriani and his guitar is amazing, but he is nowhere near as funny
and thanks for the warning about the previous Karn Evil screen name
i heard some Van Der Graaf Generator and it sounds really good. it reminds me of the soft songs by gentle giant
im deffinately going to print out Andrew's list and bring it with me next time i go to the music store
