I currently only own 1 asia cd (ASIA, self titled). I think their music is pretty good and was looking for some recomendations from fellow lovers of prog. Im fairly new to ASIA so am not sure where to start. Any tips/recomendations??

That's as good as it gets:

Only Time Will Tell & Heat of The Moment.

Chuck the rest in the bin.

I was given a free copy of the Best Of Asia, send me a stamped adressed envelope covering the cost of delivery and you can have it!

Thanks Reedlover

I think i will give the rest of ASIA a miss then, I'll just stick with self titled album. Although i do really like one song from one of ASIA's newer albums (What about love). I have it on a promo cd i got free with classic rock magazine. Seems like i have all of ASIA's best songs already so i wont waste my money. I'll invest it in the entire genesis collection instead

I think this is an open close topic.

Good call! You can't go wrong with Genesis!

If you liked Asia's first album, you might also like Boston's first album - I think it's great, even if it's not prog.

Haha wow... i think you'll find that Asia isn't too appreciated here.  Although their members constituted a prog rock all star line-up, they basically were just another synth-saturated pop machine that was short lived in the 80s. Their first the albums, Asia, Alpha, and Astra, are the albums released with the original John Wetton line-up, and each one is worse than the one that came before it. In the early 90s the keyboardist Geoffrey Downes reformed the group and began releasing more progressive material (so i've heard) and I guess they're still around doing that... although the current group is nothing compared to the 80s line-up with Palmer, Howe, Wetton, and Downes. If you're truly a hardcore prog rock fan, there's not much to get excited about here... but if you can handle some poppy arena rock, its not bad.

My favorite thing about the band is the Roger Dean artwork on the album covers

You have already the only Asia album that's worth your hard-earned cash, the rest is not interesting, maybe a "very best of" would be worth something, if you really insist on having another Asia product. but I strongly advice you not to.

Listen enjoy and cherish The Asia as you've now come to know. for the self-titled album is truly their very best.

The newer Asia is in the Toto style. Asia has never been very progressive, but I'll give them a listen long before much of the other 80s crap that raped the charts back then... If you fancy their synth sound give Saga a try. Everything before and including Behaviour is enjoyable.

As discussed on another thread, I dont like sl*gging artists off, but I have to say something about Asia

Here we have a collective of very talented musicians who decided to make some money. I have no problem with that in principle, but are they being discussed here just because the band is comprised of musicians previously in prog bands??

I have heard about two albums 'Asia' and 'Alpha' and both were just pop/rock, with nice cover artwork aiming to reel in the proggers. Does their music have any real worth in the prog world, or were they just paying their mortgages in between more 'serious' projects?

Reed Lover is right on the money when he says that the first album is the only one worth mentioning. Great album but where oh where did all the talent go after that??

One of life's mysteries I suppose.

Quick note for the musical box - hey man for a folkie, you sure are hitting the hardline when it comes to dealing with those guys in Asia

Yep, I think that was it... my personal favorite Asia line-up... and the second time ever I've seen Greg sing on stage without a guitar in his hand.... Priceless!

The 2 first Asia albums are excellent; the third one, astra, contains outstanding keyboards but guitarist mandy meyer is reallyt not convincing. I choose alpha, their second album: check midnight sun!

OK, I think we've established that Asia are not prog!

Personally, I enjoy their music a lot though. Astra has some very powerful melodic rock, but for their most powerful work, "Aria" takes some beating. Their last but one album, "Aura" was very enjoyable too, quite a bit softer, but a good listen. If you enjoy the music of the first album, there's no reason why you shouldn't enjoy many of the others. They have broadly stuck to the same style throughout.

Start at the western Russian border, work your way east, stop for some stir-fried noodles in China, then a curry in India.Tongue

i think they just about count as prog. terrible pop 80s prog that is. if that is even prog. it skims the teeth of prog but defines the genre terribly.

also has anyone notice that most of asias studio albums begin with A. just a thought. and why?

terrible pop music by people who have tried to form a supergroup to prove they can still do something but fail miserably... is these the things that are represented when we think of the asians? i will leave that for you to decide

[i am surprised the continent didnt sue them for giving em a bad name!]
