any melvins fans here? they play death metal in the veign of slayer, but more sludgey doomy, and more complex. they also have experimental albums and around the Ozma album they were very experimental with off time, and proggy time signatures.

I only know their major label releases, simply because I could never find
any of the others anywhere. I wouldn't call them death metal or even the
Slayer-styled speed thrash at all, more like a slightly sped-up doom band
if anything. They're usually referred to as "sludge" or "stoner metal".

Stag is an interesting album with a wide variety of different styles, and
hence different moods which made for something quite refreshing if not
hugely enjoyable. However, I've got to admit their other stuff doesn't do
much for me at all - not because of the harsh dynamic (on the contrary),
but more to do with the fact that the songs seem empty of meaning. I
generally listen to music on the headphones (which is a fairly intimate
setting I 'spose) and look for some way to connect with everything I listen
to. With a lot of extreme metal I pick up an evoked sense of dread,
foreboding, or anger but Houdini didn't even have that.

Not really prog, but an excellent band. To classify Melvins specifically you would actualyl have to look towards the punk scene. Because that's the scene their music, categorized as "sludge" grew out of. It's not considered metal, just like hardcore's not considered metal, you know, kind of similar, but a completely different attitude and over all a different sound.

They do use interesting timing and such, they aren't really technically prog, even though I know this sight is all about making as much stuff related to prog as possible :P.

I've given up on trying to get into the Melvins. Every album I listened to was mediocre. Perhaps they should release some kind of guide ... to help people find the interesting 2% of their discography.

In the meantime I'm quite happy with listening to Fantomas, which contains a decent dose of the Melvins.

yeah they are. They're not for everyone but they are innovative and influential.

I'll try to explain their sound as best I can, but of course you don't know till you hear it. In general it's slow music with a fuzzy guitar sound, there is an emphasis on interesting rhythms and groove. Buzz's vocals always kind of make me think of blues vocalists. It's pretty interesting.
