I am sitting here making a proto-prog/roots of prog CD compilation and I thought I would open the tracklist to suggestions. Here's the dozen I have got so far: 1.Tales of Brave Ulysses Cream (live) 1968 Surely I am missing some vital pieces. You might want to add some Spirit tracks Then some Vanilla Fuge and HP Lovecraft. Harder to find is The Collectors etc... A few Deep Purple MkI tracks too ------------- let's just stay above the moral melee prefer the sink to the gutter keep our sand-castle virtues content to be a doer as well as a thinker, prefer lifting our pen rather than un-sheath our sword |

Nice list Salmacis! I believe Van der Graaf Generator's "Aerosol Grey Machine" album is proto-prog... so maybe Octopus off of that album? Or possibly Necromancer? Being as it was written earlier than others (except Afterwards). -------------

I am being conscious of staying a bit clear of Prog artists like VDGG and Yes that started out before Prog proper got underway... I feel it should be artists that had a formative influence on the genre but didn't "grow up" to be dyed-in-the-witchwood (sorry for the pun, I could not help it) Progmeisters later on. I suppose this could eliminate GG&F and Traffic but GG&F became another group with another name and Traffic aren't really identified as a Prog band. Ok, some serious "proto-prog"- Love- Forever Changes, Pretty Things-S.F.Sorrow, Jefferson Airplane-Crown of Creation, Caravan (debut), Soft Machine debut and 2, King Crimson-In The Court of the Crimson King, Small Faces-Ogden's Nut Gone Flake, Giles Giles and Fripp- The Cheerfull Insanity of, Youngbloods-Elephant Mountain, Procol Harum-Shine on Brightly I can go on.
