Have you not purchased a personal copy of the copyright - Thus can you legally download MP3 of same album and play it without breaking the law?

Play me my song, here it comes again

What's the use of downloading an album you already have?

This is called a hypothetical situation used to discuss a point of lawDead

...but sharing it isn't if you let people without it download it

No you cannot. You are only licensed for the copy you bought.

Why not just play the CD on your computer?? Or am I missing the point? Surely if you just download the ITunes software you can burn all your albums on that and listern to them on your PC/Mac.

Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!

I don't know, I'm pretty lazy. Sometimes I'll download a song just because the CD is in a box in the garage and I don't feel like digging for it.

And I have a buttload of originals on vinyl and cassette; downloading mp3s gives me much less trouble- I hate having to mess with patch cords and analog input levels. It's probably a better copy, too, if it was a digital transfer.

Actually, that's an interesting question (well, interesting to some people, anyway!). I've heard all sorts of opinions over the years from 'bar stool lawyers' but never the real answer. Any lawyers out there reading this who are experts in the music business and care to comment? No?

My understanding is that you do *not* purchase a "personal copy of the copyright" (whatever that means). It's like a book: you can use it, lend it to others to use on a personal basis, but you do not have the author's permission to copy it.

But I understand that some online music sites (iTunes) allow a certain number (is it 3?) of copies to be made of a downloaded MP3/AAC files.

Anyone with real knowledge of the legalities care to enlighten us?
