Just wondering if anybody knows of good prog from the Philippines? -- if singing is involved, preferably in Tagalog. |

I don't know excellent masterpiece, however I own some Philippine albums. Juan De La Cruz Band is the most well known band here in Japan. Is this band famous outside of Japan ? I recommend Maskara by this group. But this album is different from standard symphonic rock or jazz rock. Wally Gonzalez is better one than Juan De La Cruz, in my opinion. I feel he is a bit close to Jeff Beck (don't expect similar music to him In comparison with Indonesian progressive rock scene, Philippines has weak movement. Or I haven't searched this scene deeply ? There are probably other good stuff in Philippines, but they are obscure, yet. If you can find Wally Gonzalez, please try the album 'Tunog Pinoy'. This is the best album I know and I own Philippine stuff. *Wally Gonzalez is ex-Juan De La Cruz Band member. |

I only ever heard Side A, Eraserheads and Freddie Aguilar ... some good music, but no prog there!

Damn, there's got to be something out there.  .... OK OK heres a true Filipino OK, prog rock is not that popular here... few people know that a genre even exist. Ive been in a progmetal band before when i was in college. We never had a record deal though, but we had our own stuffs. Weve met and played along with a few progmetal bands playing DT and Symphony X covers. DT is well known among the few proggers here. A band called Fuseboxx got lucky and had a record out. Great stuff IMO, though heavily influenced by DT. their influnces include: Genesis, Yes, King Crimson, Symphony X and Dt (as ive repeatedly mentioned). Well, Juan De La Cruz ( a name representing the common Pinoy) is a Pinoy Rock group. They sounded more like the Rolling Stones. They are one of the pioneers when it comes to that genre. I thought I was the only Filipino here.. Im glad i was wrong! -------------

Many, many thanks for all of the suggestions... great stuff! I
sampled the Tunog Pinoy album (great!) and Fuseboxx and enjoyed
both. As for Freddie Aguilar, a wonderful artist who does have
proggish moments I feel. I'll purchase some of the albums listed. Prog and karaoke might (okay absolutely do on the whole) make strange bedfellows, but now if only I can find some of this stuff for a karaoke machine I'm totally set. :) Well I can. Some Wally Gozalez is avaliable on karaoke compilations. I far prefer jamming with real instruments, but when visiting many friends here in Canada, karaoke is the activity of choice, but I've always been a little disappointed by the absence of prog in their karaoke collections even though it's hardly surprising (especially considering the long instrumentals that are so common). Sure there's always some popular Floyd, Yes, Alan Parsons etc. there... It's mostly sentimental, poppy, and love ballady stuff one finds. Anyway, thanks again for the recommendation, and I look forward to sharing the prog albums with Filipino friends and relatives. Since they know so little about prog, I hope this will be an eye-opener. You've opened my eyes to Philippine prog. |

BUKSAN the 1978, Solo album of MIKE HANOPOL, "Filipino rock legend". "King of Pinoy Rock". "Father of Philippine Rock music." "Jeproks"!, and band leader of the legendary JUAN DE LA CRUZ band. Copyright 1978 and produced by BLACKGOLD RECORDS CORP.
When it comes to Pinoy Rock Music, only one male performer reigns supreme up to this day, Mike Hanopol - noted of his black beret and powerful raspy voice. Long before today’s young showbands, like the Eraserheads, Rockstar, Introvoys, True Faith and Alamid, came to fore, there was already the Juan De La Cruz Band where Mike Hanopol started out in 1974. The group recorded such hits as "Balong Malalim", "Karagatan", and "Divisoria". In 1976, Mike Hanopol started on a solo career. His hit songs included, Buhay Musikero, with Willy Cruz and Danny Javier(of Apo) as his record producers. In 1977, Mike Hanopol’s name soared higher as he released "Laki Sa Layaw", which gives rise to the term "JEPROX". Mike earned three albums for Blackgold and a reunion LP with the Juan de la Cruz Band
