Suppose that God (or Aladdin or Merlin or David Copperfield or...) gives you the chance to make a Prog Concert with just THREE BANDS OR SOLO ARTISTS (past and/or present; dissolved and/or not; dead and/or live) WHICH BANDS WOULD YOU CHOOSE??

Here is my list:

1. YES (1972 line up)

2. GENESIS (1974 line up)

3. PFM (Per un Amico Line up)

I have already seen Pink Floyd (The Division Bell Tour), Yes (The Ladder Tour), and King Crimson (The Construcktion of Light Tour). I would be happy if I could see Genesis with Gabriel. I hope this will come true. But I'm afraid it will not happen.

What is prog rock ?

It is music that does progress. Progressive music takes a riff, turns it inside out, plays it upside down and the other way around, and explores its potential.

Too many, alas... Fortunately I saw PF both with Waters ("The Wall" in 1980) and without, but there are still too many great bands I didn't get to see, as at the time I was either too young or they didn't tour Italy. These would be my favourites:

- Deep Purple circa "Made in Japan" or "Burn"
- KC with Lake or Wetton
- CTTE-era Yes
- Led Zeppelin
- ELP
- Caravan with Richard Sinclair
- Black Sabbath with Ronnie James Dio
- Rainbow with Cozy Powell (R.I.P.)

Well, the perfect concert would currently be something like this:

Headlining: Rush
Co-Headliner: Pain of Salvation
Other Bands: Dream Theater, Pink Floyd, Ayreon (The Human Equation line-up), and because Mikael Akerfeldt is already there (see Ayreon Cool), Opeth might as well be joining on stage for a nice ending to a very entertaining day.

By the way, the venue would be a place where about 3000-5000 people can take place, with some great acoustics ofcourse!

Well for me, this would just have to be an entire day of events.

Yes - (circa '75, either wakeman or moraz will do)
-The Yes Album, Fragile, Relayer

King Crimson - (the early lineup, anything before disipline)

- In The Court, Lizard, Red

Gentle Giant - (circa '75)

- Debut, Three Friends, Octopus, In a Glass House, Free Hand

Pink Floyd - ('71-77)

- Meddle, Dark Side, Wish You Were Here, Animals

I guess it would be about 3 - 4 hours from each artist. 'Cept GG, they can stay on all night!

It'd be in autumn (maybe Halloween) in the woods.

It would start at 3:00 with Gentle Giant introducing themselves with the whole of "In a Glass House". They'd then play an assortment of songs from their other albums, and finish it off with everything on "Three Friends."

They'd then explode and reveal themselves to be... Jethro Tull in disguise! They'd start with the song "Mintrel in the Gallery" and then play all of "Songs from the Wood." They'd then play "Witch's Promise," "Broadford Bizaar," and others, and when the sun goes down they'd play "A Passion Play."

ITCOTCK King Crimson would then fly onto the stage and use an assortment of objects to murder Jethro Tull. They'd play all of ITCOTCK and the song "In the Wake..." Then they'd morph into Lark King Crimson and play all of that album, some from "Red" and all of "S&BB".

Then a skeleton would come onto the stage and King Crimson would die of fright. The skeleton would reveal himself to be Peter Hammill and he'd apologize. The rest of VDGG would walk on the stage and play all of "Godbluff", The first three songs from "Still Life," some fom "The Least" & "H to He," and all of "Pawn Hearts." PH would play some of his solo songs in between. The ghosts of the memebers of the previous bands would then come out and assist PH in "A Louse is Not a Home."

Supporting act- Mickey Rooney and Don Knotts comedy duo

My Ideal Prog Concert would consist of the following

Gentle Giant (Shulman, Shulman, Shulman, Green, Kinnear, Weathers) - songs like Knots, Raconteour Troubadour, Peel The Paint, Gods Life, River, etc.

followed by

King Crimson (Fripp, Bruford, Wetton, Cross) - songs like Trio, The Night Watch, Red, Starless and Bible Black, One More Red Nightmare, The Mincer, Easy Money, Exiles, Larks Tongues in Aspic parts I & II, etc.

and finally, headlining the show

Camel (Latimer, Bardens, Sinclair, Collins, Ward) - songs like Metrognome, Unevensong, First Light, Lunar Sea, Spirit of the Water, Lady Fantasy, Rain Dances, SELECTIONS FROM THE SNOW GOOSE (The Snow Goose, Rhayader Goes To Town, Preparation, Dunkirk, Migration, and end with La Princesse Purdue).

That would be an amazing concert in my opinion. I think the bands would compliment each other well, and I'd pay hundreds of dollars to see it.

Really, really tough call. From the artistes on this site, probably:

Mahavishnu Orchestra (1st line up)
Frank Zappa
Yes (CTTE line up)

Only problem is that leaves out ELP, Pink Floyd and King Crimson (amongst many others). I might - just might - swap Zappa for ELP. Ah, but what about Tool or Porcupine Tree??

Frank Zappa any time. Probably the best overall concert I have ever seen.

ELP is another great show live.

YES of course as long as Howe, Anderson, Squire are there and either Wakeman or Moratz.

Return to Forever

King Crimson's early era

Early Version of Mahavishnu Orchestra

The Soft Machine (69-70)

grateful dead   (69)

flaming lips (02)

 Gong (70-74)

on a summers day
with a big 1 hour 4 band jam at the end (during an orange and purple sundown)

thats what I think would be the best concert ever for me

King Crimson doing a three hour concert in which former members such like Mel Collins, David Cross, Bill Bruford, Greg Lake, John Wetton..etc, would join for certain songs (thouse which they performed back in the day in the albums)...and ending with everyone playing 21 century schizoid man with 10 minutes of pure guitar, sax, drumms, violin and bass improvisation...and Fripp would stand up!!!ShockedShockedShockedShockedShocked

Mine would be:

ELP - 1974 condition and material playing a wide array of fun stuff. These are the guys I really wish I could see...

Yes - "Classic" lineup doing all the good old stuff :) plus Relayer

Allan Holdsworth doing the entire "Metal Fatigue" album, but I'm lucky enough to see him on my birthday in a few weeks!

Saga - Doing stuff from Heads or Tales, Worlds Apart, Images at Twilight, etc.

I've seen Rush and they always rock, so they can't be included!
