I'm surprised by the great disparity between the Prog Archives ranking of the two Riverside releases 'Out Of Myself' and 'Second Life Syndrome'. SLS ranks in the top 20 as I write, whilst OOM is in danger of dropping out of the top 100. I'm maybe not in the best position to judge, having only listened to SLS a couple of times, but to me, OOM is the stronger album. Just surprised to find that most members seem to have a differenet opinion of the relative merits of these two very good albums.

Both albums are very well considered on progarchives. They are both over 4 points. The main difference is that Second Life Syndrome has been reviewed by nearly 200 people, and the number of reviews is one of the factors that raise an album in the Top 100.

I see it your way. Second Life Syndrome sounds more typical of prog-metal bands on this website anyways, does anyone else have the urge to listen to something different and fresh? In 2004/2005, Out of Myself was just that. Maybe it wasn't so much 'odd', but damn they really made their own sound. That was refreshing.

I can't understand why Second Life Syndrome would ever be in the top 100 on this website, but it is. (Not to say it's a bad album)

Well, I have something to look forward to then. I ordered "Out of Myself" and if it's better than "Second Life Syndrome", then hey, I will give a worthy and just review to help it stay in the top 100.Smile

Interesting... I found Out Of Myself to be far too derivative of Pink Floyd (albeit still very good) and was pleased to see the band's progression and new innovation on their follow-up.  Both are impressive, but virtually every aspect of Second Life Syndrome improves upon their debut.  Great band, I'm looking forward to more material from them.

for such a recently formed group Riverside have done amazingly well - the've only made two albums and they are very highly rated, rightly so they are excellent albums. most groups need two or three albums just to get noticed, and their first two are already considered classics! what more do you possibly want??

Just wanted to add that it's not just due to their three (two official CD's and one special fanclub EP) excellent albums that has drawn all that well-deserved attention to Riverside... if you ever get the chance to see them play live, DO SO!

They're even more impressive when playing live (just seen them at De Boerderij a week ago... still 'flying'! Embarrassed)

I love both "Out Of Myself" and "Second Life Syndrome". Simply, one of the best prog-albums in years!

Out of myself is the more original one, though I've played Second Life Syndrome more often.

Personally I regard Voices in my Head as the most original compilation of studiotracks by Riverside

What a coincidence, I just found out about them yesterday!

Amazing band (what could you expect from the Polish?) , which album would be a better starter? Cheers.

Hi there,

I'd just go with the flow and start with their debut "Out of Myself", than listen to the EP "Voices in my Head' and finish with their most recent one "Second Life Syndrome"...
