nationalism is the most idiotic ideology ever formulated... and i don't care what country you're from, there's nothing inherently worthwhile about any artificially plotted chunk of landmass.

Why do USA citizens keep calling America to their country?

That's really pretentious, does the rest of the Continent doesn't exist?

Iván

PS: Have nothing against USA or their people, on thecontrary, I lived there for a couple of years and had a great time, but taking the name of the whole continent for them is at least despective for the rest of us.

^ That's an interesting topic. I can see your point completely- it'd be like Japan or China (or India) calling themselves "Asia".

On the other hand, it's been so commonly done and for so long that it is ingrained (all over the world). Once that happens, it's pretty much a lost cause...

I don't quite understand this.  Actually the continent the USA is on.. is called North America.  Your continent is called South America last I heard.. for english speaking americans anyway.  I believe in spanish speaking S.A. its called Suramérica, and in Portuguese, its Ámérica do Sul.

Also the name of our country is the United States of American... we are the united states on the continent of North America... so where is the confusion there?  If Canada wanted to call themselves the Canadian States of America... or if Mexico wanted to do the same thing.. .we'd have no problem with that... they are on the same continent afterall...

So if you had some country there who wanted to call themselves Los Estados Unidos de Suramérica, they wouldn't be very creative, but they could probably do that too...

So for short people call us Americans.. we are afterall.  And not to forget that most Japanese, Chinese and Koreans prefer to be called Asians these days... and thats not a bad thing either.

If you'd wanted to call yourself Americans.. you should of copyrighted the name first...

Nope Threefates, the whole continent is called America, there are only 5 (Maybe 6 Continents if Antartica is also considered) and there's no difference between North Central or South America.

South, Central or North America is only a name created to identify regions, but really there's not such thing. But that's not the problem.

USA is in fact United States of America, but the problem is that from the President to the last ctizen calls that country AMERICA, the networks call Bush The President of America (He's not my President), their second anthem is called America the Beautiful (Is there official anthem in USA? Because until 1896 there wasn't).

All of this as if the rest of the continent, including Canada and Mexico (Which are also North America) didn't exist.

Iván

PS: By the way, the official name of Brazil is United States of Brazil (Estados Unidos no Brasil ) and Mexico is United States of Mexico (Estados Unidos Mexicanos), because as United States of America they have a Federal Government divided by States, not because they copied anything.

So USA is not the only Federation of United States in America either

Yep, my atlas, my dictionary and my encyclopedia says 7 continents.

North America, South American, Africa, Europe, Asia, Australia, & Antarctica

None of these say that both continents together are known as America... The only reference to anything known as just America is the USA.

Central America is actually a part of North America.

I like my country.  I like the area in which I live California and I think that we as a country can be very Arrogant. No more so and probably less than when Britain ruled most of the world (at least we did not export slavery) or France in it's colonization period (or any other European country).  We are the leaders of the "Free World" How did we get there? How did we become the target (and the paradise)?  By helping win a war and helping a lot of countries win that war. You can't argue this. We outlasted the Soviet Union and became "the" power. It won't last forever and I guess the next big question is who replaces us?

(at least we did not export slavery)

But you were the biggest market for it!
Most people do not realise that Black Africa itself has a very guilty conscience where slavery is concerned.
Yes, The British Empire was an enormous bully and subjugator of peoples, but aren't we supposed to learn the lessons of history-not repeat them?

We were YOUR colony for Gods sake, Reed. Britain controled the trade in and out of this country. Anytime they wanted to stop the huge profits they could have.  Britian was our main model! So it's all your fault!

There is never any real peace is there no matter who is on top.  I would think we would be a bit more tolerant than lets say China or the Soviet Union if they were on top (ask the People in Budapest or the students in Bejieng)

Probably your Enciclopedia and Atlas says that, if printed in USA or Western Europe. My Atlas talks about 6 continents as any Atlas from most Europe, and according to the British texts, there are ony 5 Continents, so I wont't have to choke as my friend Reed Lover said.

The seven continent model is taught in parts of Western Europe and North America, while the six continent (combined Eurasia) model is also taught in North America and is the primary continent model used in scientific contexts. The six continent (combined Americas) model is commonly taught in Europe and South America. The five continent model is normally taught in the United Kingdom and Mexico. The continents of the "five continents" model (as shown by the five Olympic Games flag rings) are speculated to be the five permamently populated continents (viewing Antarctica as only temporarily populated, and all the Americas as one).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Continent - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Continent

There's no logical reason to separate North from Soth America, because both are only one mass of earth not naturally separeted.

But again, that's not my point, from an historic point of view, America is the Continent discovered by Columbus in 1492, and not only USA.

^ wow, that is really interesting! I didn't realize there was a debate over the actual number of continents.

Do you think somewhere there's a cartography or geography forum where they have a dedicated long-running thread or two on the topic? I suppose someone might find that more important than Phil Collins (hard as it may be to imagine).

Their is a perfectly logical reason to distinguish between North and south America-they are completely seperate land masses floating on completely seperate tectonic plates.

Antarctica too is a continent-it has nothing to do with population;permanent or otherwise.

The funny thing is that i like USA and most of their people (Well I say most because there are a$$holes everywhere we have a good bunch here, specially inour Government), don't have nothing against them or their Government (I have a neutral position towards Bush). As I said I lived in the deep south of USA (Birmingham Alabama) a couple of years and enjoyed very much.

Only that even when we live in small third world countries we are as part of America as USA.

Maybe it's only that I'm stubborn.
