MARILLION was the first Neo-Prog band who released four very good albums (with Fish) in the first half of the '80s, but which one is better?

Not the first half of the 80s, but the entire 80s really. I vote for Clutching at Straws, since this is a poll and all.

I find it very difficult to answer this question, since I consider all of these albums great. I voted for Fugazi because of Incubus which I think is the best song of the Fish period, but catch me on another day and I'll vote for any of the other three...

I guess out of all 4 really strong albums, Clutching At Straws is my favorite. I thought it had a very different sound and liked how Rothery's style changed just a bit. "Warm Wet Circles/That Time Of The Night" and "The Last Straw" are amazing.

I had to go for Misplaced Childhood. The others are classics too though. Misplaced Childhood just oozes with class. I must admit though Fish' live version of the whole album on his 'Return to Childhood' CD is for me the best of the lot.

I love them all. "Script" was an amazing debut, and gave me hope for the future of prog. "Misplaced Childhood" has been a source of inspiration during a lot of hard times. So, that is why it gets my vote (plus, I saw them perform it live).

I was torn between Misplaced Childhood and Clutching at Straws. I voted CaS because it needed the vote.

Script is my all-time favourite prog-rock album;it had made me adore prog rock;I've already been telling this thousands of times.Without Script I'd NOT be here now,and my life would be pretty useless I think.Script, then Childhood, very closely followed by Fugazi.Clutching is crap,IMHO,a huge disappointment for me

Although Fugazi sounds more original in my opinion, I have voted A Script For A Jester's Tear, also because it has such an important emotional value for me: in those days prog was dead and suddenly there was Marillion with that wonderful progrock album Heart and they re-animated the entire scene Clap The concept album Misplaced Childhood has never been my cup of tea (I only like half of it) and Clutching At Straws features a too dominant Fish in a negative way Unhappy

Clutching At Straws is probably my favourite Marillion album full stop! (So guess what I voted for here!)
Script would be second, with Misplaced just ahead of Fugazi. (Nevertheless, Fugazi is still better than at least four Hogarth era albums to me.)

Voted Script, but Fugazi is not far behind. I'm quite surprised that Misplaced Childhood is ahead of Fugazi. All the Fish Marillion albums are very good IMO.

Seems like I'm going with the majority here, but I like Script the best. In fact, it's my favorite Marillion album. It just has so any great songs like The Web and He Knows You Know and my favorites, Forgotten Songs and the title track.

There all good but script showed that a new band could make a prog album and have it sell without resorting to a new wave pop recording with prog overtones

Four great albums;
Script with its post-prog sound deepened my interest in both old and neo-prog and was a light in a time when prog was rarely heard. Fish as a frontman and lyricist was a kick!
Fugazi was much more up to date and I was completely sold! All prog elements in a modern costume-WOW!
Misplaced is a great album - still not my favourite, maybe it was to popular...? The songs are gooda concept album and all other the prog-element are there...still not a favourite.
Clutching is to me an album with a modern and more personal style (Rotherys guitarplay, Fish lyrics are more stripped down and concise).
Hard to choose! Today I feel notsalgic and vote Script. Tomorrow it could easily be Fugazi and the next day Clutching...

Clutching At Straws.

It's literally one of my top 5 favorite albums of all time:

Genesis - The Lamb
Miles Davis - Bitches Brew
Zappa - Joe's Garage
Marillion - CaS
Coltrane - A Love Supreme

...in no order

The best is actually B-sides themselves with the marvelous songs Grendel, Cinderella Search, Lady Nina, Tux on, Three Boats Down From The Candy, Charting The Single, all favourite songs of mine.

but from given list I prefer the debut closely followed by Fugazi, and at respectable distance Misplaced and Clutching.

Misplaced Childhood for me as well, but Fugazi is a very, very good album too. Clutching at Straws was a slight disappointment for me after the masterpiece MC. Still a good collection of songs, of course. The debut album has many good moments, but I think it only showed the potential that Marillion were better and fully able to express on Fugazi and Misplaced Childhood. So...
1 Misplaced Childhood
2 Fugazi
3 Clutching at Straws
(3 ½ B Sides Themselves)
4 Script for a Jester's Tear

Clutching At Straws, hands down for me. It was the first Marillion album I ever heard, and the one that started it all for me. Script has many excellent moments, "Forgotten Sons" being one of the greatest songs of all-time, period. Fugazi never did much for me as a whole, but it had three standout tracks: "Assassin(gTongue)", "Incubus" and the title track. Misplaced is overrated in my eyes, but it is still one of the most well-executed concept albums by a prog band (it also produced the excellent b-side, "Freaks", for which I took my name).

Anyway, nothing can beat Clutching (second best prog album, only behind Selling).

It's a close contest between Misplaced Childhood and Fugazi but I'll go with Misplaced Childhood because there are not so many cd's that have moved me to tears several times Cry

"Fugazi" is both my fave Fish-era and ever Marillion album - it is a pity that it is being the great loser in this poll, since it is not only one of their strongest sounding albums, but it also contains their bes tsong ever 'Incubus', together with the majestic namasake track and the explosive 'Emerald Lies'. The ballad 'Jigsaw' is, IMHO, one of their finest slow songs ever, too.

     Kind regards.

God this was a hard choice but went for Misplaced in the end. Saw Fish play the entire album recently. Fantastic stuff.......

Fugazi is my favorite Marillion Fish-era (and also Marillion Fish and H) album.

All songs on it are catchy and epic. Assassing is one of the song (with Grendel) that defines neo prog !

My second favorite is Script...
I like Misplaced Childhood, but I find that the "neo-prog spirit" is more present on their other Fish-era albums

I love all of them but:

1. Fugazi (a masterpiece)
2. Script (see 1.)
3. Clutching (first three songs are stunning! so is the last one...)
4. Misplaced (a great one too, however I don't like the last two songs, IMHO kind of forced and unnatural happy ending)

Ugh! Very difficult... I have to say... MISPLACED CHILDHOOD... I really love this albums but I think MCh is the definitive Marillion masterpiece...
