Well, it seems that french prog wasn't as overlooked as I thought but what about russian prog. I haven't heard too much of it but maybe someone had. I have only heard avtograf, azazello and horizont which are quite good but perhaps I missed a lot.

LITTLE TRAGEDIES - Return (*****) — WOW, here's an amazing progrock CD that carries me away to progheaven! It's the latest CD from the Russian progrock band Little Tragedies. During the first listening session I noticed a very mid-Emersonian inspired keyboard sound, especially the Yamaha GX-1 super- synthesizer (known from the video-clip "Fanfare for the common man" from ELP) but also a typical ethnic flavor, mainly the wonderful Russian vocals. The first composition "Dream 1" features classical orchestrations (evoking The Enid) and soaring keyboards, followed by the distinctive Eastern-European atmosphere with Russian vocals and some folky sounds. Then splendid keyboardwork, heavy guitar-riffs and in the end a flashy synthesizer solo. The song "After death" is very alternating: excellent guitarplay (sensitive, heavy riffs and fiery runs), spectacular keyboards (organ and synthesizer) and a propulsive rhythm- section. In "Credo" we can enjoy swirling interplay between guitar and keyboards and in "Neuromantic" the contrast between the howling guitar and majestic harpsichord is very captivating, along with the Russian vocals! Among all those cascades of sumptuous progrock there are a few mellow tracks like "Canzona" (sensitive electric guitar and beautiful piano work) and "Return" (subdued with warm Russian vocals). My highlight on this CD is the composition "On the themes of Grieg": lots of sumptuous and fluent prog featuring marvellous keyboard work, inspired vocals and a final part featuring great duels between guitar and keyboards, in the vein of Trace, mid-ELP and the Japanese keyboard driven prog, SUPERB!! IF YOU ARE UP TO RUSSIAN VOCALS AND YOU LIKE ELP AND THE JAPANESE KEYBOARD PROG, THIS CD IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

I think there was a website with many samples but it was a few years ago. I'm not sure if it's still going but I managed to download many samples of russian, czech and other slavic bands. I think I'll check it out again shortly.

You can listen online lots of Russian/former Soviet music here: http://www.russiandvd.com/store/audio.asp?char=C&genreid=3355&orderby=0 - http://www.russiandvd.com/store/audio.asp?char=C&genreid=3355&orderby=0 .
I can recommended from their catalogue:
- AVTOGRAF
- DIALOG
- LITTLE TRAGEDIES
- ARSENAL (first and probably the best Russian jazz-rock band)
- PESNYARY - start with "Gusliar", their most progressive record
- GUNESH
- Edward Artemiev (the pioneer of electronic music in USSR)
- QUADRO (jazz rock)
- Viacheslav Gorsky (former ARSENAL and QUADRO keybordist)

I already have a couple avtograf albums but they were rather commercial. I haven't heard the others but I'm not into jazzrock anyway. I'm more interested in symphonic and folkie prog. I'll check the site all the same.

AVTOGRAF - band's best and most progressive tracks are on "Avtograf-1" album (unfortunately, it's impossible to listen the album on the mentioned site; tracks could be downloaded, but not for free) and "25-th anniversary concert".
Folk-prog - "Gusliar" by PESNYARY is very good example, this band has incredible vocal harmonies.

The most amazing Russian band is AukcYon. Love these guys. Supposedly they are a rock group, but of most unorthodox type. Whether or not they are prog you can judge for yourself, here’s their latest album:
http://www.russiandvd.com/store/album_asx.asp?sku=37168 - http://www.russiandvd.com/store/album_asx.asp?sku=37168
Listen at least through their passionately anguished apocalyptic "Bin Laden", the second composition on this album. Although I myself much prefer their earlier stuff: albums Zhopa, Bodun and Ptica.

The thread says Russia not USSR. Yes I know Horizont have been
listed here for some time and it is clear not everybody else was
talking lesser known bands. The liner notes for the Gunesh's album 45 degrees in a shadows , states: 'jazz rock Turkmanistan group'

I guess Shafi and Gunesh were unique in that - although you are hit by a number of tunes, that you first may label Indo Jazz Fusion but realised with time they are some distance from the likes of Shakti. I'm sure there is Mongolian throat music as well. One tune by Gunesh is inspired by Vietnamese music - and we had to wait at least 15 years before French-Vietnamese guitarist Nguyen Le crossed jazz rock fusion with Vietnamese folk music

As far as I can remember, their vocalist really put me off. Instrumental parts are very good, though. So I kinda disagree with above suggestion. These guys could do without songs.

Abandon all your hopes. Faust is in the same style. I mean - music in all instrumental parts is great, but when he starts singing - it sounds like from completely different band/style/genre. I wonder if it's only me or someone else also thinks that music and lyrics/vocal lines do not go together. The band is using lyrics by great Russian poet of so called "Silver Age" era (beginning of 20th century), and lyrics as poetry are great on their own, but IMO it does not suit music at all. This is one of the rare cases when you put two "great" together and get "nothing great" as the result.

I can't agree. I think music and lyrics go together quite well.
In my opinion LITTLE TRAGEDIES is the best prog band appeared in Russia in the last 20 years.
Singing style is close to traditions of Russian bards. Gennady Ilyin is not a great vocalist, but he has his own, instantly recognizable, voice. For me it is much better than countless technically good, but faceless singers.
And in case of LITTLE TRAGEDIES lyrics are important, while listening to their albums you have a lot to think about.
Those who are interested can listen online (stream) their 2000 album "Porcelain Pavilion" here: http://www.russiandvd.com/store/product.asp?sku=36254 - http://www.russiandvd.com/store/product.asp?sku=36254 . It represents the band's style well.

Actually all you said above is true. I only disagree with the first line. IMO instrumental parts and vocal melodies are not matching at all. Singing style of Russian bards (which I love when sang by Russian bards) does not go together with powerful Symphonic Prog the band is playing. And on the other hand, poetry by Nikolay Gumilev does not require musical surrounding of this kind to remain important, thoughtful, beautiful and great.

MAGNIT
RENTGENKABINET
^ - no recordings left .They all are said to be "art-rock"
