Rush has been a favorite of mine ever since I was a little kid--the versatility and raw power of this band just never ceases to amaze me. Their brilliant songs aside, what grabs me are the first 15-30 seconds (sometimes even longer) of a Rush track. What Rush tune makes the hairs stand on end when you first hear it?

I voted for "The Big Money" from Power Windows. It's not my favorite song; but, it's one of my favorite songs in terms of how it's initially delivered. In this case, the three of them simply explode. Those first few seconds are simply stunning.

Not sure who just voted for "Xanadu" (An easy runner up for me. Beautiful picture painted with music); but, if you're a Dream Theater fan, doesn't the intro to "Trial Of Tears" sound amazingly similar to "Xanadu"?

Xanadu still amazes me-what a track!
I remember reading the lyrics as I sat at the bus stop impatiently waiting for a bus home after buying the LP on day of release. I knew it was going to be a killer track there and then before I even let the stylus touch the vinyl.Great memories.

As soon as the sequencer starts off 'Vital Signs' my hairs instantly stand on end, happened to me the first time I had ever heard the song. Amazing!

oh hell why not...

The Necromancer

always has been a favorite of mine, none of the silly heavy handed intellectual drivel from Peart.  A great D&D inspired epic that new Rush fans can listen to while sitting around in the basement playing D&D with their schoolmates...

The Camera Eye for me. I love ominous synth build up, then when Neal comes in on the drums and Alex hits that first chord is pure ecstasy.

I voted "Subdivisions". That synth intro is so classic: the ultimate classic of the 1980s if you ask me. But they have too many awesome intros. "The Pass", "Distant Early Warning", "Kid Gloves", "La Villa Strangiato", etc.

I went with Subdivisions.

Yes. I've only heard it live, but I think it is a nod to Rush, as Portnoy uses cowbell/soundblock/whatever those are in a similar fashion to Neil on Xanadu and The Trees.

Not really a Rush fan...but Cygnus X-1 is an Cool track (and the first Rush track i heard that i liked), which prompted me to get a few of their albums.

Analog Kid and Losing It off subdivisions both give me chills.

But if you never heard a Rush song before I would have to say 2112.

2112's intro just blows them all away. It sounds epic from the first second and keeps trucking though the whole song.

<<Yes. I've only heard it live, but I think it is a nod to Rush, as Portnoy uses cowbell/soundblock/whatever those are in a similar fashion to Neil on Xanadu and The Trees.>>

If it were to only end with Portnoy copying Peart, then it could be chalked up to mere coincidence; however, even Petrucci tries to sound like Lifeson. You'd have to be deaf not to notice it.

I've always liked the intro/beginning of "The Spirit of the Radio". The rest of the Permanent Waves album, however, bores me to death.

I was thinking the same thing. It was the track that got me into Rush in the first place!

I love "Xanadu" to bits and at first I thought of voting for that - then I thought of another intro that I really find fantastic (though it's very different and belongs to a different era): that is, "Test for Echo". The way the guitar enters first, then Geddy's bass chords, then his vocals, before the song gets in full swing... Superb. Pity the rest of the album is not up to that standard.

I think YYZ was the 1st rush song I've ever heard, because it was an instrumental with a drum solo after it. Great song!

However I must say it really depends. If if is for a classic/ just plain rock fan, I would probably say either Spirit of Radio, Tom Sawyer or Limelight. For a prog fan, YYZ or Xanadu. For a 80's rock fan I would say subdivisions. For a total stanger to Rock (like I was before Rush) or someone who isn't much of a music fan, I would say Limelight, YYZ or Xanadu.

'Xanadu'

I love the version on Exit Stage Left. It really sends a shiver through me.

I like the intros to 'Tom Sawyer' and 'Big Money' too. Brilliant concert openers.

I'd probably say Subdivisions or Jacob's Ladder... I'll go with the latter.

well, depending on how long an intro is i'm gonna go with the necromancer on this one; it's one of the moments where lifesons's guitar really shows his talent [not necessarily on the technical side, but rather on the emotional one]

Is there a poll about the preferred sound of Rush? They have distinct eras.

Early Hard Rock
Prog Rock/Metal-ish
80's Synth
90's Unique
Back to the Roots

Obviously I didn't do a good job of defining these eras, so add a comment and perhaps a new poll could be generated if feasible.
