So, shine on Syd!

As many of you might know, Syd is my hero. He was a creative genius and a man who existed on another plane of existense. He sacrificed his sanity for this. His music was absolutely stellar and wonderful-In my opinion soe of the best ever.

But Syd Lives on-we have a part of Syd in all of us. When you look into his eyes you can almost feel the madness, the genuis, and the innocence.

Syd will always shine my friends, so lets all hope he go's to a better place-and he will.

To repeat myself from one of the other threads...

The loss of Syd is a truly sad one, but what is more sad to me is how unrecognized his contributions are.  I first heard the news on another website, where the headline actually quoted DSotM, which of course was not one of Syd's albums.  One never hears Barrett-era PF on the radio (except 'See Emily Play' rarely).  People commented the article by quoting a lot of 'The Wall' and WYWH.  sad.  Cry

There's really no proof that the drugs did anything at all to him. Schizophrenia and psychosis rates are not notably higher in users of psychoactive drugs than in the population at large.

Finally his family can rest in peace as no one will be trying bother them to get Syd to record something he wasn't able to do for 35 years.

Likewise for Syd, as I am sure he was equally harrassed.

Forget the drugs, they only hurried the situation. This was a person who was tortured mentally and probably wouldn't have lasted more than a couple of years with Floyd without the drugs.

Was he a genius? I don't know. I do know that this label is too often applied to someone who dies young, or burns out early.

Syd, I hope wherever you are, you are Resting In Peace.

The drugs were a mere catalyst, they hurried it. To be honest they were probably good in a way-they gave his tortured mind an escape from reality. I think he existed on another level of human existence, where he had trouble communicating with those not on that level.

How ironical, just after the release of the Pink Floyd DVD Pulse, it's announced that Syd Barrett has passed away! In the mid-Seventies Pink Floyd became progrock millionaires while Syd's mental state (schizophrenia, badly influenced by heavy hard drugs abuse) went downwards, he decided to turn into a kind of recluse, helped by his mother who died a few years ago.
I learned about Syd his music while I was a huge Pink Floyd 73-80 fan, it was at the home of a friend who was very much into The Sixties. After listening to Arnold Layne I was mesmerized by his innovative guitar work, distinctive vocals and eccentric lyrics. I still love Arnold Layne, See Emily Play, Interstellar Overdrive and especially Astronomy Domine, how sad Syd didn't get the opportunity to blossom more than a few years Cry.....

It is ironic to me that just last week I decided to create a home made CD compilation of classic psychedelic music from the 60's. And of course it had to include Syd era Pink Floyd. I had not listened to these tracks in many years. I scanned through several of the old cuts, and decided to use the track "Paint Box." Again not hearing this in many years I couldn't believe how brilliant this track was. It stirred great emotion and is still a very exciting listen. It really is one of the great English psychedelic music classics. I revisited all of the early Floyd singles, and some of the BBC sessions, and realized what an impact Syd Barrett has made on not only early British psychedelia, but also as a pioneer of progressive rock. His "Astronomy Domine" alone is a major proto-prog track, and still one of my Pink Floyd favorites. If it wasn't for Syd, would we have ever experienced the prog sub-genre called psychedelic prog and/or progressive space music? His influence on both psychedelic pop and progressive rock is obviously overwhelming. May the brilliant light of this crazy diamond shine forever. Thank You Syd. You will not be forgotten.

Roger Barrett in 2001..taken from some UK tabloid story.

Whilst everything that happened to him with his breakdown was so sad, it did appear that he pulled himself back to some level of reality and a limited interaction with society. That takes real guts.

Today is a sad day indeed.

When I started to listen to Pink Floyd I liked the Syd-era most. That has changed now, but I still remember how amazed and impressed I was by the psychedelic pop songs, mostly written by Syd. Sometimes simple but often with a twist you rarely heard.
Later on "Shine on" always seemed stronger when thinking about PF:s former member.

I can't say with words the pain I feel.
A large part of the being I'm now was developed under Barret's Floyd influence.

He's now the Piper at the Pearly Gates.

Stop all the clocks, hang up the telephone,
Stop Seamus the dog barking with a juicy bone,
Silence the Echoes, and with muffled drum
Bring out the coffin. Let the mourners come.

Point me at the sky, I'll circle overhead
Trailing the message, Syd Barrett Is Dead.
Take up thy megaphone and relay the news,
Every music lover today has the Jugband Blues.

He was the Piper at the Gates of Dawn,
The Lunatic lurking on the lawn.
Every Emily, Arnold and Lucifer Sam
Bow their heads at the loss of the Crazy Diamond man.

The stars are not wanted now: put out every one;
From the Dark Side of the Moon to the Heart of the Sun;
Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood;
For music now will never be any good.

Debunking the "common wisdom" about Syd's drug use leading to his mental problems is the exact opposite being insensitive, because it doesn't place the blame for it on him. For all we know, the drugs could have saved his life by keeping suicidal thoughts away or they could have had absolutely no effect at all. I'd say that drawing cocksure conclusions that the drug use caused or exarcebated his mental problems is disrespectful in the extreme and rude under the circumstances.

I even started a thread in another area on Syd, so I have no effing idea what it is you're projecting into me, Geck0.

Syd was a melodic genius and for all the great stuff Floyd did, they never again wrote a single melody with quite the unique phrasing, intervals and periods that he put in almost everything he did. It's sad he couldn't get it together to make more music than he did, but we will always have a legacy that may not be huge, but on a level so much above most other song writers that it has far greater value than the scores of revered artists who simply retread the same paths already explored by many others.

I'd say almost every Syd-penned tune is a better epitaph, because they contain his distinctive musical touch (which is entirely absent from later Floyd).

I was over in the UK during June and the first couple of days of July. I had gotten the chance to see Roger Waters. Before I went to the concert, I decided to read up on Pink FLoyd because I didn't really know much about. I didn't realize how much of an influence Syd was to the rest of the group. After discovering Syd was somewhere in Cambridge, I thought I would go there to find him after Water's concert. At the time, my parents said no, and now, finding about this unfortunate event (to the rest of the world, anyways), I'm glad I didn't go. Even if I had found him, he might have been in the hospital because of his health.

Syd, I wish I could have heard more of your stuff prior from you departing. I hope that you are well wherever you are and that your legacy will never die.

RIP, Shine on you Crazy Diamond, and maybe one day, I'll see you on the dark side of the moon.

First I thought Syd was a typical victim of drugs abuse but reading many books and articles about Pink Floyd an Syd Barrett, I discovered that already years before he started to take hard drugs, he behaved strange and unpredictable (due to the early process of the mental disease schizophrenia). Everybody who is interested to read more about this but also Syd his huge creative side, I recommend the books Crazy Diamond Syd Barett & The Dawn Of Pink Floyd by Mike Watkinson & Pete Anderson and especially Lost In The Woods by Julian Palacios Thumbs Up ...

Of course the drugs didn't kill him.  Infact, it states he died due to complications of diabetes.

Hi, i'm Cheese's sister, (He let me write something here)
Sad to hear 'bout Syd's death :(
He was symbol of creative genius and will be sadly missed in the music industry and in the hearts of all his fans. His music contains beauty and simplicity and in his lullaby-like tunes, eg. See Emily Play a sense of the innocence he still looked at the world with.
Syd Barret, a true artist.

I know this may sound cheesy, but without Syd, I don't even think I would be here right now. Pink Floyd was the first band I was really into, and besides a compilation, Saucerful was my first realy Prog album. RIP Syd, another legend lost this year. So many Prog greats have passed as of late: Mr. Dean, Rick van der Linden, Bob Moog, Pierre Moerlen, and now Syd, among others.

You're the man, Syd. You are the piper at the gates of dawn. Without you, those other guys would never get close to where they are now. You endured madness and being ejected from the band that you loved so much. You will always be the spirit of what Pink Floyd is. You are and will be dearly missed.

R.I.P. Syd Barrett 1946-2006

"How I wish, how I wish you were here, we're just two lost souls swimmin' in a fish bowl, year after year. Runnin'...over the same old ground, what have we found....the same old tears...I wish you were here."
Shine on, Syd.

To repeat from another thread - it's a tribute to Syd on it's own the number of threads started in his memory...

Syd may have only been with Floyd for one album (technically), but without Syd Barrett, it's arguable there would have been no Pink Floyd, and that is unthinkable.

Personally, I was not too keen on his later solo material, but the man has my undying thanks for bringing together Waters, Wright & Mason... and letting Gilmour, his roadie, take over when it became necessary. He may not have left a large canon of music, but his legacy was and is the very existence of Pink Floyd.

I'll not dwell on his descent into illness, but 60 years old is too young - Rest In Peace, Syd; may the madcap continue to laugh!

Media-distributed myths of how LSD users grow horns, set fires, and jump out windows LOL

I'm rather disappointed that Syd has become the primary example of an 'Acid Casualty' --- it's tragic really, because;

1. He was born with schizophrenia/synaesthesia and his earliest works were already showing his secret breakdown
2. People focus on the drugs and not on his own personal natural creative force that came from the heart
3. Nobody blames the Mad Hatters for spiking his drinks with LSD all the time without him consenting to it; they act as if he willingly subjected himself to the 1mg LSD experience repeatedly

Today as a tribute to Syd I'm going to watch his first acid trip.
You can find a little under 11 minutes of it here:

Syd was the closest thing to a true Astral Man this earth has ever seen.
He's flying with Leary and Thompson now.

I miss him already Cry

Also, I thought I'd quote Gilmour... this song was obviously about Syd, many years after the fact. Gilmour clearly feels guilty for taking Syd's place. In the first stanza he is talking about Syd, and the second one refers to Roger.

Poles Apart

Did you know... It was all going to go so wrong for you
And did you see it was going to be so right for me
Why did we tell you then
You were always the golden boy then
And that you'd never lose that light in your eyes

Hey you... did you ever realise what you'd become
And did you see that it wasn't only me you were running from
Did you know all the time but it never bothered you anyway
Leading the blind while I stared out the steel in your eyes.

The rain fell slow, down on the roofs of uncertainty
I thought of you and the years and all the sadness fell away from me
And did you know...

I never thought that you'd lose that light in your eyes

LSD is the most misunderstood substance in the universe, and he really didn't fall because of it-it was because of things packed away in his psyche he didn't know of.

Don't forget Ken Kesey!

Quote LSD is the most misunderstood substance in the universe

Sad, isn't it? I mean that the human race would lock itself out of something so beautiful?

I think people are generally too ignorant to know that they can 'know' themselves. They think 'knowing' themselves just means knowing what they like or how they act... but never how they work or what makes them tick.

:( I'm sure Syd's happy now...

Heh, Flaming just came on. Now I don't feel so bad about him dying :)
