Wow. I think this yearlist ended up pretty great as well. Only one album each allowed. That means no In the Wake of Poseidon, Burnt Weeny Sandwich, The Least we can do...,

Not enough poll choices for, Yes, Gracious, Cressida, Pentangle, Third Ear Band, T2, Marsupilani and lots of proto prog.

The first five poll choices are pretty much my own top five. So Magma wins this year, just ahead of VdGG. What is your favorite among these ten debuts and fourteen early entries?

Emerson, Lake & Palmer´s debut is their best album IMO. Can't believe it was made all the way back in '70... H to He and Atom Heart Mother come in at second.

Note: The Polite Force was from 1971. Egg's debut was from 1970.

Anyway, my pick is VDGG's third, closely followed by Magma's debut and Genesis's second. 1970 was a fantastic year for prog.

Copying myself from your other thread:

"1970 has two teams:

1970(a)
Van Der Graaf Generator -- The Least We Can Do Is Wave To Each Other
Van Der Graaf Generator -- H To He, Who Am The Only One
King Crimson -- Lizard
Jethro Tull -- Benefit
Marsupilami -- Marsupilami

1970(b)
Gentle Giant -- Gentle Giant
East Of Eden -- SNAFU
Genesis -- Trespass
Pink Floyd -- Atom Heart Mother
King Crimson -- In The Wake Of Poseidon"...

Great year. Only 1971 was better, in my opinion.

Van der Graaf Generator H To He Who Am The Only One gets my vote here.

Just as tough a choice than for 71.

I can only eliminate the Curved Air and the Quartermass albums.

I cannit seem to choose, so I will pass

Its hard yes, but I'm currently obsessed with Magmas debut. Must have played it ca. 25-30 times the last three or four months. That's almost a full working week! My top three of this year are in my alltime top 20.

You'd remove this years Curved Air album too? Their debut is not flawless, but still wonderful imo. Quartemass is the only album I haven't heard. I just noticed it being a quite popular release.

Same here Mickey, you deserve five clappies yourself.

It took me longer to get into than the rest of their string of classics releases '70-78, but now its passed all the other Magmalbums and straigt into my top five, where there's rarely any action at all.

And don't you just love Teddy Lasry's beautiful fluteplaying?

Not an easy choice.

The first ELP album is wonderful, and BENEFIT is one of my favourite Tull albums.

But Caravan's IF I COULD DO IT ALL OVER AGAIN... is proggier than either of these. It also sounds far more imaginative than Genesis' TRESPASS, which I find really boring (apart from 'The Knife').

So Caravan gets my vote.

But wait a sec! Wasn't YES ALBUM released in 1970? One of the most brilliant prog albums of all time!

Never mind, I think I'll stick with Caravan, hoping that some readers still new to them might check them out...

Hello, I am back again after remembering my apparently idiotic post! Thanks to Yukorin for imagining that my decision to call 22 albums "junk" stemmed from alcohol consumption or perhaps glue inhalation.

I still stick to my statement though! I apologized to Yukorin, but I cannot repeal my statement! ELP's debut bores me to death; VdGG's release doesn't stun me; Gentle Giant's Gentle Giant is not for me; Third ticks me off for some unknown reason; and Atom Heart Mother is nothing special.

I will most likely change my opinion in a few months time when I have been able to acquire all 26 albums. Don't get your knickers in a twist, please!

This thread must've been posted while I was away... So many fantastic albums (quite a few of my 5-starred favs too), but my vote also went to the wonderful, self-titled ELP debut. It can boast of one of the best opening tracks ever, the immensely powerful, Hammond-driven "The Barbarian"Wink, as well as the lovely, wistful "Take a Pebble".

Other than that, out of this list I'd also mention Caravan's impossibly long-titled second album,Soft Machine's "Third",  High Tide's self-titled second album, and Traffic's marvellous "John Barleycorn..". And of course I agree 100% on the monumental "In Rock"...Heart

I voted Third.

My top 10 prog albums from this year would look something like this:

1. Third
2. Trespass
3. Atom Heart Mother
4. H To He Who Am The Only One
5. In The Wake Of Poseidon
6. Weasels Ripped My Flesh
7. John Barleycorn Must Die
8. Yeti
9. Deep Purple In Rock (if that's actually a prog album)
10. ELP

However, the two last ones could easily have been exchanged for If I Could Do It All Over Again, I'd Do It All Over You and Lizard.
