Hey all. I have Genesis' "Foxtrot", "Selling England..", "The Lamb..." and "Seconds Out", but what are your opinions on earlier albums; "Trespass" & "Nursery Cryme" in particular?  ------------- And Jesus said unto John, "come forth and receive eternal life..." Unfortunately, John came fifth and was stuck with a toaster. |

I only have Nursery Crime of those two, and I can absolutely recommend it The first song "Musical Box" is one of my favorite Genesis songs of all time, just great, the 2nd "absent friends" is just to connect the 1st and the 3rd song (IMO) which is "Return of the Giant Hogweed", another great song, songs 4 to 6 are all good, but more quiet and slower (i really like "seven stones"). And "Fountain of Salmacis" (was that right? It was actually my first genesis album i really liked ... 3 masterpieces and 4 good songs! |

I like both of those albums
Tresspass is a little mellower with more twelve string parts except for The Knife which is one of their best songs ever. Stagnation is kind of a song that they would pull Supers Ready from in a few years. Anthony Pillips is a good guitarist also although you will hear a big difference in the drumming between this Album and Nusery Cryme when PC joined. -------------

trespass is outstanding! nursery cryme is excellent, but i don't like collins' drums: they are a bit gross, and IMO it is the most obscure (dark) record of genesis. i prefer it to lamb lies down though. ------------- [HEADPINS - LINE OF FIRE: THE RECORD HAVING THE MOST POWERFUL GUITAR SOUND IN THE WHOLE HISTORY OF MUSIC!> |

Nursery Cryme is my all time favorite Genesis album, of course is less solid than Foxtrot because of For Absent Friends, but IMHO The Musical Box and Fountain of Salmacis are the best tracks in Genesis catalogue. Many people criticize the drumming in Nursery Cryme, surely the production was so bad that the drums sounded like tin cans, but the music is so wonderful and the atmospheric sound is so powerful that I can live with that problem. Both are brilliant - but it's the drumming on Trespass that is somewhat suspect, as it's altogether too busy and insensitive to the music. The drumming on Nursery Cryme may be badly produced (I don't own an FP, so can't verify), but Collins was at least very sensitive indeed to the incredible music. I can't say I've ever been bothered by the sound - but then I'm not a drummer. If you only get one, get Nursery Cryme - but don't overlook Trespass, as you would be missing out on "The Knife", which is outstanding, IMHO |

If I spent 2 hours carefully writing a review of Nursery Cryme (labour of love, but work, particularly for one who types as slowly as I do), why would I want to -- in effect -- review it again here? I've already said all I wanted/needed to say about that album, and I would guess that others who took the time to review it have done so as well. No offense, please, but I'm often surprised that more people (reviewers, especially) don't answer these types of queries with a response like mine. It was meant to be helpful -- not as an insult or cutting off of discussion. Discuss, for sure -- but please read the reviews too. A lot of time & effort went into them. Yes, I see, but wouldn't the album reviews be the logical place to start for information about an album, on an album review site?

Get LIVE (1973) then you get the best of Trespass, Cryme and Foxtrot.

Actually I am in your camp with this one Peter. One ought to look into the review section first and then if he has any inquiries , he should post them. By the way. I have an excellent review of Acuity and except for one mispelled word...might I say it is a masterpiece? |

I never listened to either, but as I see some of the songs that I like were born in these albums. Return of the G. Hogweed is great, with the musical box. I'll have to give them a looking at... -------------

Yes Shatterwolf, you're missing two great albums if you don't get them. It costed me a bit of time to get in Trespass but now I'm a fan of it and Nursery Cryme was always one of my two favorite albums (with Foxtrot) today it's my N° 1. Iván |

 They all are great up untill and included the one with the track called Mama,after that forget about'em,they became far too commercial unlike PINK FLOYD who carried on delivering some amazing albums up to present time i.e.The Division Bells'.------------- all the knots get back to the comb. |

Thanks everyone! Yeah the reviews for each album were my first ports of call, and I've read pretty much all of them (there's a high chance that I missed a couple). Yes, I agree that White Mountain and Stagnation are incredibly beautiful. Very atmospheric and my faves on TRESPASS. I prefer the live version of The Knife on Genesis Live although the studio version is worthy. Nursery Cryme contains my all-time favourite song by Genesis, The Musical Box. Harold The Barrel is a bit of fun and Seven Stones and Return of The Giant Hogweed are good also. It's definitely an album to get. |

No reason not to get either. Personally I enjoy Trespass more, although
Nursery Cryme is a fine album. I partially enjoy Trespass more, because
of the historical factor, the first album wiht a 'Genesis" sound, as
well as Anthony Phillips for a change. I won't argue that he's a better
guitarist, but it's interesting to see the difference between Hackett's
wonderful live version of "The Knife" and that of Philips. Looking ofr
someone is one of the most heartfelt Genesis songs I can think of, and
it starts me off deep into the music, with Gabriel's wonderful vocals. This is my personal opinion, though most seem to prefer "Nursery Cryme", if you're looking into it for a more enjoyable listen I would choose "Nursery Cryme", goign under the assumption that the majority rules, however for a historical album I would say "Trespass"."Trespass" is definatley an album that takes some gettign used to, I didn't like it after the first listen, seemed bland adn empty, but after about the 5th time it surpassed "Nursery Cryme" for me. In the end there's no reason not to get both though. ps- seems to me that vinyl is a much better listen for Genesis albums, because th eproduction problems don't show as much. That's just my opinion with Foxtrot, the only one I've heard on vinyl, it's also better produced than the previous 3 though. ------------- Collaborators will take your soul. |

I completely agree with Rob the Plant. "Trespass" is my preferred GENESIS album compared to "Nursery Cryme". I know "Cryme" has 'The Musical Box' and a number of other great tunes, it's just I find "Trespass" so much more emotional! Whether it's 'Looking For Someone's melancholy or 'The Knife's proto-metal anger. I also absolutely adore 'Stagnation' and its middle instrumental section. Both albums are ESSENTIAL GENESIS though, and both deserve the many 5/5 star ratings they often get. ------------- Marmalade...I like marmalade. |

All the albums are great but my fav is SEBTP. Tresspass can be hard to get into but is worth the effort (IMHO) -------------

I'm with you on this one - for some reason, I've never been able to get fully into 'Trespass'; I have no doubt it's a fine album (essentially their debut, if you ignore the "this is our first time in the studio" naivety that was 'Genesis To Revelation'), but for me, the sound only really gelled on 'Nursery Cryme'; Peter Gabriel especially finding confidence in his voice, and Bank's orchestral use of the Mellotron swelling the sound to real majesty - listen to the closing section of 'seven stones' and the opening of 'fountain of salmacis' - this is how a Mellotron needs to be used. -------------

I like both albums. "Trespass", IMO, has more acoustic guitars than "Nursery Cryme", which is more "heavy" with the addition of Steve Hackett`s lead guitars and Phil Collins` drums. "Trespass", IMO, still sounds like done by a band still looking for a mature style. The songs "White Mountain", "Visons of Angels" and "Stagnation" are my favourites from this album. "Nursery Cryme" is a bit better than "Trespass", IMO. "The Fountain of Salmacis" is my favourite from this album, but the rest of the songs are very good too. You could also buy "Genesis Live": a very good live album. |

Here's an idea- Get every single Genesis album from the Gabriel era, then get the Genesis Archives (good one), and then get "Trick of the Tail", then "Wind and Wuthering", then eventually "And ThenThere were Three", and then "Duke", and then "Abacab", and then "Genesis". But for god sakes DO NOT go beyond Genesis. ------------- Collaborators will take your soul. |

I am lately getting very much into Trespass and Nursey Cryme, after a
couple of months of getting very much into Foxtrot. "Stagnation",
"Can-Utility...", "The Musical Box" and especially "Supper's Ready" are
simply phenomenal. Where have I been??

I thought Trespass was great. I do like Steve Hackett as a guitarist, but it was a nice change to hear Anthony Phillips. I like the sort of 'naive' and pastoral sound that the album has, especially on tracks like White Mountain and Stagnation. I now need to get 1973's Genesis Live to hear the live version of The Knife (great song).
I really like Foxtrot, but I think I prefer Trespass. Probably because they were the same age as me when they did it! I guess the next port of call is some of Anthony Phillips' solo material, if I can find it! ------------- And Jesus said unto John, "come forth and receive eternal life..." Yeah, "Geese & The Ghost" was what I had in mind.
I know I shouldn't judge albums by their covers, but that "Sides" one was just too much...
I have to say though, I don't actually mind FGTR at all. I know it isn't really Prog, but I like the pastoral/pop sound that they were producing.
