Since I started listening to prog, I have mostly despised neo-prog with the exception of SFAJT by Marillion, however recently I decided to give Marbles and The Masquerade Overture a try and loved them!!!! Not sure why it suddenly "clicked" but it did! I sampled some other songs on the archives and I can say I dont particularly like IQ or Arena, at least the songs on PA. Anyways, my question is what are some other neo-prog bands I might enjoy, preferably with a "mystical" vibe if that makes any sense. Peace and God Bless

If you liked the albums you mentioned by Marillion and Pendragon, then try Polish group Satellite. They have two albums available, A Street Between Sunrise And Sunset, and Evening Games. Both are good, with nice 'lush' keyboards and interesting guitar work, almost Hackettish at times. Very melodic band too.

Like you, I am not fussed on IQ or Arena, but I find Marillion, Pendragon and Satellite go together rather well.

Aha! Approve

I think you should definitely get "Believe," possibly Pendragon's best album, and certainly their most textured. It's got flavors of the middle East throughout and I would describe it as mystical in part.

You should also try Saens, perticularly "Escaping from the Hands of God." You can check my review for it if you like, but it is probably a very good fit for you.

Also, check out "The Yearning" by Aisles. They're almost completely unknown, but play very good and stylish neo-prog, without anyy supposed cheesiness. I'm going to buy it in a few minutes in fact.

I haven't been digging deep into Neo as much as I should lately, but I'm getting back into it. Continue on with Marillion and Pendragon. They're my favorite Neo bands, but don't give up on Arena and IQ either. I suggest you try "Songs from the Lion's Cage" or "Pride by Arena first, as they're closer to Pendragon's sound and less modern rock than their later albums. IQ may not be your type of band, as they're songs tend to be the poppiest of the main Neo bands' (in my mind, at least)....well maybe not some Hogarth-era Marillion, but still. I say give the mp3's on the site a good listen as they represent some of the best writing in all of IQ's discography.

Another good band you might like to check out is La Tulipe Noire. They're a complete rip-off of Script-era Marillion, but with a more modern sound and brilliant female vocals. Shattered Image is a pretty typical album, but I love it because the melodies and aura about the album are so beautiful. I can't find the right word to express the album, but it reminds me of late nights driving in the rain when all of the roads are deserted.

aside Stonebeard recomendations, some more:

Clepsydra, Like Wendy, Woaahh major deja vu here, I can remember myself typing major deja vu in a completely similar thread, back than I deleted it, let's see if that changes this time.

anyway.

like mentioned, the softer more Pendragon type neo:

Clepsydra, Like Wendy, Rain (one album Cerullean blue, check on the site bio, free download, if still available of course). Saens, Sattelite, Colage

IQ the wake and other early stuff might be interesting too.

more edgy: Pallas, Jadis, Arena, Riverside (soem Pink Floyd and slight metal elements), Twelfth Night (Fact and fiction).

more towards symphonic: Clepsydra (Gentle Giant reminisence) Discipline (VDGG).

outside neo style, but with similar sounds (IMO). Eloy, Camel, Pink Floyd (WYWH), Genesis (Trick Of The Tail) Steve Hillage (Fish rising) though their relevance may only been seen by me.

IMO Prophit In A Statistical World is just as good as EFTHOG, I dont know anything about there debut album though (has a long French name and is under the name Sens).

You should also try Strangefish, either Fortune Telling or their debut Full Scale, they've both got great songs.

Check out Magellan, a neo-prog-metal band. Really good and adventurous stuff, especially their two first albums.

Expect from Shattered Image (La Tulipe Noire)sections that heavily remind you of these Marillion songs: Jigsaw, Slainte Mhath, Script for a Jester's Tear, Forgotten Sons, That Time of the Night. And for fun, you'll also hear a Return of the Giant Hogweed reference!Wink

Saens and Strangefish are also pretty cutting edge and have a great sound to them. Same goes with Frost, whose debut was surprisingly good. Darwin's Radio isn't bad either, a bit monotonous but they are pretty good at the same time.

Of course, if you like Fish era Marillion then I'll highly recommend Fish's solo career to you. It may not be as progressive as Marillion (in fact stonebeard and I constantly debate on his progressiveness), but you may like Raingods With Zippos or Vigil in a Wilderness of Mirrors.

You have to sometimes let people make decisions for themselves, they aren't entirely bad, I just wouldn't rate the album 5 stars. Now for the person who started this thread, it may be different.Wink

Point taken, but I couldnt tell ANY difference between the first two songs they played, even the lyrics sounded the same, let alone the music. I thougt it maybe better to let the thread starter explore some of the less exceptionel bands in Neo after finding what s/he likes from it.

Assuming you decide to give Frost a try and you like it, go on with Kino and their recent album, Picture. It features the same wonderful John Mitchell from Arena, ex-Porcupine Tree Chris Maitland on drums, John Beck from It Bites on keys and Trewavas on bass. It's somewhere between Marillion, Asia and The Police... and other things. and most importantly it's very enjoyable and sounds fresh.
Discipline is great, but not exactly neo prog to my ears.

really add clepsydra to your list.

and let cybnus and Snowbeard bicker amongst themselves, they don't even like Fish (though Raingod with zippo's is approaching brilliance IMO)
