I'm simply curious to find out if people prefer Yes to Genesis. I respect both bands, both have their shining moments, virtuosic musicians, and great concepts, but I feel that Yes is a joke when compared to old-school Genesis.

I like Genesis more, but Yes is not a joke in comparison with anybody.
This is more a matter of taste than a matter of musical quality and denying the qualifications of Yes is denying Progressive Rock.
The only aspect I never could get into is Jon's voice.

If either of these bands is a JOKE, surely it will be old-school Genesis? Think of 'Harold the Barrel', 'Willow Farm', 'The Battle of Epping Forest' etc.
Seriously I don't see how you can like one but not the other. I never had a problem with Jon's voice - I myself used to sing like that!

Of course you can, taste knows no limits, hey I don't like most King Crimson.
But not liking them doesn't allow me to say King Crmson is a joke. Yes and Genesis musicians are skilled, they wrote excellent music (Well, excellent is also a subjective term) you can like one more than the other or even hate one of them, but calling Bruford, Collins (Drummer), Wakeman, Banks, Howe, Hackett, Gabriel, Anderson, Squire or Rutherford a joke well....
BTW: If your voice is like Jon's, try to learn some instrument

I just can't for the life of me find any interest in Yes. I don't know why, I can get deep into Camel, Genesis, VDGG, I can even go ape sh*t over some good old Magma, but Yes never connected with me. I don't like Jon Anderson musically, his vocals, his lyrics, anything really (love Chris Squire's playing though). It's just a taste thing.

Genesis.
Both bands deserve all the respect they get, but Yes's vocals and lyrics are sub-par compared to Genesis, IMO.
I'd listen to Gabriel over Anderson any day if forced to choose, even though I actually listen to both pretty frequently.

To say that Yes is a joke is not fair at all. They're a very fine band and maybe my second favorite. However, the number one spot happens to belong to Genesis and it really doesn't matter who they're up against (in my heart at least). But, Yes is amazing in their own right. Definatley deserve to be considered right next to Genesis.

Used to prefer Yes, they used to be behind Camel as my favorite prog band but there is something that annoys me sometimes about their songs nowadays (maybe too over the top?) and I'm usually in the mood for Genesis more often. And I don't get what is so great about The Yes Album, I think its rather mediocre.

By who?????
If there are two bands with a radically oppoosite approach to music are Genesis and Yes, they were always different.
- Yes is based in individual virtuosism and Genesis was a team work.
- Yes loves solos, Genesis rarely made a solo.
- Yes has a direct approach, Genesis is atmospheric.
There's simply no relation between them to say that Genesis were Yes wannabes.

Genesis have one thing that many other bands lack, and that is strong, consistent songwriting ability. And a unique atmosphere. Personally, I can't think of another band who could match them in that department. They could move effortlessly through comedy, poignancy, satire, and almost medieval story telling. I also love Yes, by the way, and put them in my top five, at their best. Albums like Fragile, GFTO and Relayer are all wonderful things, with great epics and superb musicianship.
But, for me, they can't match the songwriting of Genesis.

They are very close in my affections. As far as their 'classic' albums are concerned there is little to chose between them.
5 star studio albums:
Yes
Fragile
Close To The Edge
Going For The One
Genesis
Foxtrot
Selling England by the pound
A Trick Of The Tail
4 star studio albums
Yes
The Yes Album
Relayer
Tormato
Talk
Genesis
Lamb Lies Down On Broadway
Wind And Wuthering
And Then There Were Three
Duke
I'm not a fan of either bands first 2 official albums. They both put out a decent live album each and both bands suffered from taking an overtly commerial approach later on.
Genesis have more interesting lyrics and put images in my head like no other band.Yes were more inventive musically and had a broader sound.
I declare a draw!

These are my two favourite bands of all time, both of whom have
produced brilliant pieces of music at various stages in their careers,
and both of whose albums will always remain firmly at the centre of my
album collection. If I had to choose between them, though, I wouldn't
have to think too long about it : YES, without question, for
their musicianship, for Anderson's amazing voice, and above all
for their ability to express emotion in its purest form that surpasses
even (and this is really saying something !) even what Genesis were
able to produce. Close to the Edge remains, for me, the whole
progressive movement's ultimate achievement. Mind you, my number 2
album of all time would be Selling England ... Whichever one you
choose, though (and each of us will have his/her own individual
preference), I think most of us would agree that these are probably the two best exponents of progressive music in general.

Well put, although I must say that if one were to choose only two exponents of progressive music, the competition is so hard that it is not given that it would be these two who would win.
Personally I prefer Genesis to Yes, at least if we're talking about Genesis in the Peter Gabriel-era. Even though Yes has produced some of prog rock's most memorable moments, especcially on Close To The Edge and Relayer, Genesis represents something more unique and profound in my opinion. Peter Gabriel's theatrical approach really sets Genesis apart from anything else in music (even though they weren't the only theatrical rock band).
If I was to pick an exponent number two, after Genesis, it would either be King Crimson (for starting the whole progressive movement and being able to keep a high quality standard for 5 decades) or Van Der Graaf Generator (for matching Gabriel's theatricality, although in a much darker fashion).

Indeed, the thread originator's comment is a bit harsh. I also

I beg to differ.... compare "Nursery Cryme" with "The YES Album" of the same year... Yes was still a more melodic rock act with progressive tendencies... but Genesis, from 1970, were already an established symphonic prog act, whereas Yes became a fully blown symphonic progressive band around Close To The Edge, while in Fragile they were close. So I even dare to say that Yes were ripping off Genesis... well rip-off is kind of a harsh term... but they surely learned a lot from Genesis and KC.
